    Default Henna

    Positive experiences, horror stories?

I used to use it when I was a teenager, and I remember it added a lot of shine and volume. Then once I used it after putting in highlights and it turned my hair green.

My hair is mostly virgin now, and I'd like to even the color (lighter at the ends from sun and wear) and add shine and volume, and do it in a natural way.

What I'm considering is using colora henna (the drugstore stuff in the blue and green box) in light brown, which I think would just tint the bottom of my hair since the top of my hair is medium brown.

    Thoughts?

If you're darkening or staying the same shade, henna's work well.

How about a demi permanent? No harsh chemicals or effed up smell. As a stylist, my only concern with henna is the fact that it never really goes away. A year from now you may want highlights or another color service and your results may be orange or green hued hair. If you're planning on sticking with it for quite some time, then letting your hair grow out, it shouldn't be a problem.

I've noticed that with long term henna users, the hair starts to look dull, too. It's like seeing old paint through a fresh coat. Just my opinion.

I just henna-ed my hair & the "Chestnut" colored henna turned my hair black with a green undertone. I was OK with it, but beware. Maybe you should buy the uncolored henna.

i've been using henna to color my hair for 2 years. i use the brown henna to make it red (and does it make it red!) i buy it at indian/pakistani markets. it's made my hair healthier, thicker, and shinier. however, the only downside is that you cannot put in highlights, dye, or use any other chemical treatments on your hair. i'm cool with that.

I used it for a while, and I thought it was great, although the colour is not very exact. But you really, really can't mix it with chemical colour. When you say "mostly virgin" - how virginal is that, exactly?

I did that once... oh what horror. From then on I've restricted my use of henna to skin ornaments.

My grandmother has been dying her hair red-brown with henna for the last 50+ years. She's 80 and still doing it!Her hair is naturally dark, thick and very healthy. It looks good, and probably doesn't damage the hair much.I'm not sure what kind of henna she's using though, she's in Moscow.

I'm a technical virgin, hee hee. The ends have some Feria still, I'm sure, and about half my length has a dose of a 4 week semi-permanent (Natural Instincts).

I will strand test several areas before I commit.

What about Herbatint? I used it once a few years ago and the medium brown turned my hair very dark brown with green undertones, like MM's experience with Henna, but maybe I should just pick a lighter colour.

Or maybe I should just leave my hair the fuck alone, lol.

If you want to dramatically darken your hair with henna, you have to do it in two steps - light to medium, medium to dark, or medium to medium-dark to dark. I think before you use it, you want to make sure that your hair is completely re-virginized. And not in the Britany Spears way. Your hair can't be taking it through the back end and then telling the henna it's really a virgin. It counts.
