    Default Meth and Teeth Grinding

I grind my teeth - a lot. So much so that my jaw usually hurts by the end of the day.

I quit meth about 7 months ago after an addiction and I was wondering if this was a long-term side-effect. It never happened before the meth.

A girl mentioned on the E thread that she did coke and now has a hole in her nose and grinds her teeth. My nose has finally healed but it took about 5 months to stop the bleeding mostly.

    But does it ever stop?

Grinding teeth can also be caused by stress. Possibly, your body had gotten used to that from the meth use, and kind of goes on 'auto-pilot' now, whether it's currently stress-related or not.

I do know people that have quit meth and heroin and have stopped all this physical side-effect stuff. I can't speak for how long it actually took though, but I don't think it was over 7 months. That seems like a long time.

It sounds like you do this during the day? What about at night? You may want to contact a dentist about it. They can fit you for a mouth guard (primarily used for sleep-grinders) so that they don't wear their teeth down. Eventually, it may even correct the issue all together.

PS Congrats to you on quitting. That is not easy.

Maybe you should chew gum during the day . I don't know of anyone grinding after kicking . Just glad for you stopping its such a cruel nasty drug . I haven't done any in years but I swear to you if I see someone on TV doing it my BP goes up and I get nervous - so strange .

I don't do it when I'm asleep but I do it when I'm awake at night normally. It doesn't appear stress related but I've been doing it ever since I quit, for the last seven months consistantly. I tried chewing gum and I did it so much the gum TURNED TO POWDER IN MY MOUTH! O_O

Whenever I see or hear about meth on TV I can feel the burn in my nose and I drool for it. How disgusting! It's so sad because Michael's mother (who met me when I was on my last days of it) says to me, "You were so nervous and jumpy and wild when we first met you and you calmed down so much!" She doesn't even know I did it! Even worse is I didn't see the difference, I really still don't.

I really don't want to wear fitters during the day, that would be terrible.

But YAY I have Medicare with Australia now so I can see a dentist!!

Its a long road girl and it will be tough to kick - really you must say good-bye to anyone you know who is useing otherwise you will go rite back . If you just grind at night get a mouthpiece my wife wears one - she never did drugs but she's got this nasty grinding habit - sounds like I'm sleeping next to a horse eating hay lol ..

omfg! how did you get aussie medicare? i was born here and they wont give it to me!

i dont have any side effects from being on meth- i do have a retarded memory and full on blanks in conversation that make me look like an ass. but no teeth grinding.

ha you could always wear a fluro mouthguard during the day

yay! for quitting meth tho. it scares me watching it on the news latley....SE qld has the highest rates in the world for usage apparently. i guess its cos all the kiwis move here to stop their addiction, but end up bringing it with them and going back to what they know.

LM, that was me on the other thread. It's been a while since the hole was cauterized in my nose (18 years), but it still seems like my membranes are kinda thin. Whenever I get a cold and have to blow my nose a lot, I automatically start bleeding within a day.

As for the teeth grinding, I notice that I do it whenever I'm stressed because that's when I used to do coke...to snort away my problems. Maybe it's psychological, but it's been forever and it has never stopped. I don't grind constantly; just under extreme stress.

    Hope yours does sweetie.

Edited to add: Whenever I see someone doing coke, on TV or in person, I swear I can still feel the drip. That scene in Scarface kills me every time.

Some say that teeth grinding can be a sign of intestinal parasites, others say thats a wives tale. I just thought Id throw that in incase you wanted to look it up.

I got Medicare because of my new visa allowing it. I don't know why you can't get it!! Odd. I have -ALL- Australian rights now!! YAY.

Anyway, I'm going to the doctor and dentist to see what I can do. I do NOT grind at night so there's no problem there.

I know it was you Dylan but I... didn't want to name names.

Eighteen years and you still crave coke?

Man, this is going to be a loooong battle.

^ Yes it is, but you've come a long way. So many people never even get a chance to quit.

One good thing is that your teeth are still intact. As someone who has struggled with my own alcoholism and chemical dependency issues, I have met many many recovering and active addicts. Problems with teeth becoming incredibly porous and breaking/ rotting due to prolonged meth use abound.

I have a feeling that your teeth grinding may be a comfort kind of thing. People can develop twitches like grinding teeth, or constantly tapping their leg on the ground b/c when they were high it was a psychologically comforting behavior. After a while you don't even notice it.

Now that you have been clean for a little while, you are noticing it, and it is bothering you more b/c it reminds you of what you are trying not to think about. You are lucky to have dental. It's up to you whether you want to be up-front w/ the dentist, but I promise you the meth epidemic has increased the number of patients visiting due to drug related problems. They know what's going on.

7 months is a long time, but depending on how long and how much you were using, it may take much longer for you to start feeling 100% Just know that it does get better, you're not alone, and to take it one day at a time.

How do you know you don't grind at night? Because night grinders don't know they do it - only those who sleep in the same room and get awakened by the noise. Your man may not have heard it and/or may not want to say anything if you grind at night (I've had bfs who wouldn't say anything until I brought it up)....

I have been a night grinder for at least half my life (and I have never touched any kind of uppers) - who knows if I did it before and just no one told me. I only found out because someone finally told me and from then on I tend to ask anyone who sleeps in the same room with me if they heard the noise.

Best thing you can do for now is probably get a mouthguard. Even if you only wear it at night and around the house when awake, it may help you stop the grinding - if there's something to block your grinding you may just lose the habit.

I told my boyfriend to see if I grind at night. He's around when I sleep. He has never once seen me or heard me grind in my sleep. I asked him when I noticed I was doing it during the day and hurting my jaw a lot. I wanted to see.

I'll probably wear one whenever I'm alone. As it is, I put a jean's pocket (that I pulled off a pair) in my mouth everytime I catch myself grinding. Doesn't help. Now the jeans pocket has a hole in it. :/

I grind my teeth at night. The dentist says its bad, I've put 40 years of wear on otherwise perfect teeth. I started doing it after the first time I took X in 1997. I didn't do it again for a long time after that, years perhaps. I had never done any uppers either. It was the catalyst though. Messed up huh? I can't wear a night guard at all either.

I grind my teeth and I've never used meth even once. I think it's stress.

It ONLY started when I started meth. So that means I've had over a year of straight stress. And considering I take Ativan for stress and I STILL grind my teeth, I think it's something else.

PS: I don't take Ativan regularly. Only during a panic attack. Maybe 50 pills a year. And I still grind my teeth after I've taken one.

A real mouth guard is much better than a jeans pocket. You won't wear a hole in it like the jeans pocket. At least not NEARLY so fast. LOL

I hate to break it to you honey I don't think Medicare covers any dental costs. Did you mean a Health Care Card, as these get you access to some free dental work in Queensland.

Or am I just wrong? If so, let me know as I would love free dental work

NOTE: I am getting that information from:

Ancillary claims, including dental, optical and physiotherapy, do not attract a Medicare benefit. However, as part of the Medicare two-way service, you are able to complete a Medicare two-way form (110k) PDF icon, attach the original accounts/receipts and lodge your ancillary claim at a Medicare office. Your claim will be forwarded to your private health fund for payment.
    and

    A. Patients who are not eligible for free dental care in public sector dental clinics in Queensland

These patients pay fees for all parts of their treatment. Typically, these fees are much less than those used in private practice. Set fees apply for the initial examination and then for complex procedures which involve multiple visits and laboratory work, such as endodontics (root canal treatment), periodontal maintenance, crowns, bridges, cast posts, dentures and related items. The set fee covers the multiple visits involved, and must be paid in full before the laboratory component of the work can be completed. The set fee for the initial phase of care (the examination and treatment plan), which may require one or more appointments, includes any X-rays taken.

A set fee of $ 30.00 applies for all other appointments for routine dental care, and this is due at the time of the appointment. This fee is fixed and does not relate to the length of the appointment, or the number of procedures performed during the appointment. In the situation where the only treatment undertaken in an appointment has been a filling, and this has been commenced but has not been completed (a temporary filling may have been placed), the normal per-visit fee will be waived.

    B. Patients with a Health Care Card

Clinical work undertaken by undergraduate students on patients who are eligible for free dental care in the public sector (e.g. with a Health Care Card) is subject to special arrangements. In the undergraduate clinics, approximately 60 per cent of patients are in this category. Fees are not charged to patients with Health Care Cards, Pensioner Benefit cards, or other cards which give entitlement to free dental treatment in public dental clinics in Queensland since their treatment by undergraduate students is subsidized fully under the terms of a service agreement between the School and Queensland Health.

I grind my teeth, and I've never taken a drug harder than prescription allergy medication.
They do sell mouth guards at drugstores. Otherwise, you could try buying some for tooth bleaching and wear those. Maybe get the customized ones.
