    Tell me about Australia!

My boyfriend and I are thinking about taking a serious scope-out visit to Oz in the near future, but I have some general questions that are probably better answered by you folks already residing there..

    1. What's the dif. between the east, the west, and the south?
    2. What's the general "vibe" like over there?
    3. I'm not sure what to ask but I want to know more...

Sorry if I sound clueless! I went to Australia once when I was 12.

It's a terrific country - great people, a very laid-back and friendly culture, good booze, just all-around cool. Very diverse lifestyles depending on where you are. For some reason, no one ever visits Tasmania, but it's my favorite place on Earth. There's an overnight ferry to get there from Melbourne, and you can bring your car. Best hiking and the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen, and Tasmanians are like Southerners without the bigotry.

Unfortunately it's very difficult to move there. But I guess that's what keeps it authentic and that's why their society runs so well.

My impression is that if you have a job that is in demand in Australia, it's easier to move there. There are shortages in certain professions, and they don't mind importing talent to fill those.

The vibe is good. I'd liken the vibe to a town in the American West 40 years ago. The leftover feelings of "frontier" are still strong. Privacy and individualism are respected. However, the government influence is more socialist and more pervasive than in the traditional American West. That is my VERY BRIEF impression of the vibe. Take it for the very little that it's worth.

Sydney was a young town in terms of median age. Attractive in the business parts, run down in some older parts. Good public amenities. Pretty good public transportation. Big enough to have stuff to do, small enough to be livable. The climate's very mild.

I liked Australia and New Zealand. If my life circumstances were different, I wouldn't mind moving to either one, at least for a while.

    1. What's the dif. between the east, the west, and the south? depends...the climate, the populations, the landscape.. not too sure what your asking. north QLD is hot cairns is beautiful, melbourne in at the bottom, great city, coldish, perth is awesome, full of p[oms, but laid back city, sydney is cool -just a fun city.
    2. What's the general "vibe" like over there? aussies are known to be laid back. again a persons attitude can vary dwepending on where they are from. i have found melboune ppl are stuck up prats in a sc, but friends who are from there are nice as.
    3. I'm not sure what to ask but I want to know more... get a lonley planet guide on australia.

Australia is a beautiful country, a wonderful place to visit. There is so much to see. My favourite place is the Kimberleys, in Northern Western Australia. Broome is stunning. The people are layed back and love to drink and take lots of party drugs. They can be quite the laugh and alot of fun.
If you are successful in life though, don't let on in any way. Aussie's are famous for the "tall poppy syndrome", and they will cut you down.

    Are you planning to live?

You CANNOT come to the country without one of the registered 'needed' jobs IE a skilled migrants' visa. Otherwise you need to be sponsored by an employer guaranteeing to hire you for 2+ years and pay you 30k a year. Otherwise - you need to marry an Australian or love one. It's NOT an easy country to come into. My reccomendation - become a baker! It's really easy peasy to do in America and Australia is short of them at the moment and want more bakers.

The west coast has hardly a thing in it. One major city, Perth, really. East coast is where it's at. Sydney is known for being bustling and money-making in sex-oriented. Melbourne is known for it's art and culture and music. Brisbane is known for it's slow laid-back pace and immense HEAT in the summer. Hobart is known for being beautiful but freezing.

    1) North is hot, fairly spread out, regarded as having more bogans. East, like Sydney, the weather is all over the place, the people are busy, consumed with their own lives, it's snobbier. South like Melbourne is wetter, more artsy, more emo's. Apparently Perth is becoming the place to be. It's far away from everything, but it's getting pricier and more popular.
Don't go to Tasmania unless your boyfriend is your cousin.

I think that's everything my friends decided in high school! hahaha.

    ^^^ Lol, thats funny!
I dont know if i have much to ad.
The general vibe? Be prepared for people to randomly talk to you about cricket if you come in summer and footy in winter. We are a very sporty nation! (-:
Aussies are layed back, easy going and friendly-as, as a general rule of thumb. I have never been west or south except for Melbourne. Melbourne is great for night life, - lots of resturants and bars, cultural stuff etc, there's always something on. Melbourne is famous for its shitty weather - all four seasons can happen in one day! Its freezing in winter (to Aussies anyway - if your from Poland it wont bother you...) but the summers can also be extreme with temperatures soaring to the 40's.

Sydney is a beautiful city, good for sight-seeing and tousisty stuff. Being one of the worlds gay capitals it can be quite a colourful and relaxed place. The beaches are beautiful too and the Blue Mountains. Sydneys weather is more stable than melbournes, warmer generally but not as scortching as Queensland.

SE Qld, well the beaches are beautiful and its very layed back. The rapidly dissapearing bushland is lovely. The Sunshine Coast in particular is very nice. If you like theme parks you'll like the Gold Coast. I cant think of anything to write about brisbane, lol.

Northern NSW is beautiful too. Theres alot of alternative lifestylers there which gives the whole area a unique feel. The scenery is wonderful too. For something out of the ordinary visit Nimbin :-D

I have never been properly outback unfortunatly. Some of Australias smaller towns are interesting to stop off at for short amounts of time. Be prepared to be stared at, but in a nice way, lol.

Bill Brysons Down Under book is a pretty funny read!

Unfortunately these days Nimbin is about the junkies. The only thing really different about the place is that people hustle you on the street to buy weed. I'd recommend visiting Byron Bay (the most eastern tip of Australia), and Mullimbimby and Murwurlimbah( beautful town surrounded by lush rainforest and an old volcano, Mt Warning) Byron is quite touristed so there is plenty to see and do. Last i was there i went diving with grey nurse sharks and a big ole turtle

I also highly recommend Bill Bryson's book, except in the USA it's called "In a Sunburned Country." (It's the same book, just different titles. Not sure why.)

Thank you all so much for the replies!! I am indeed considering moving there, at least after my school is finished (like 5 years...).

The book recommendations are awesome too and i'll make sure to get out there and do some research! Thanks again, guys, sorry this reply is so short (I'm kind of in the middle of something ATM).

Also be warned that once you're 30, it becomes even more difficult to emigrate. The sooner, the better. You might consider transferring to an Australian university; a student visa is easier to get than permanent residency, and then it's easier to get residency once you're already in the country.

I considered moving to Australia (still considering, my SO isn't so hot on it, unfortunately), and managed to get a visa: I had a very brief period when my age, degree and then-current job got me the minimum points, and I wasn't going to pass it up.

It was tedious (and expensive: medical reports, evaluation of degree, etc) filling out all the forms, and took about a year to process, but there were no surprises other than that. It was essentially a case of "you fit the criteria, you're in, here's your paper." Especially pleasant was arrival: it took about one minute longer to process me on arrival than it does the average tourist... I actually asked the immigration officer TWICE if he was sure he had actually processed me properly, because I was expecting more :-). I have five years from the date of arrival to return, otherwise I lose the status (really don't want to do that!).

I very much got the feeling (not just from the "official" standpoint, but from the people standpoint, too) that once you're in, you're in, and it's extremely welcoming. Sociability-wise, I have to say it wasn't a culture shock (coming from Ontario). Less of a culture shock than Ontario was coming from Quebec, where I'm originally from. It felt slightly more American, in the sense of having a stronger identity/sense of self than anglo-Canadians do, however.

I definitely would like to go back: I know if I blow this chance at the visa, I'll never meet the criteria again, unfortunately :-(.

Nimbin had it's fair share of junkies when I lived there back in '89, but I still loved living there! I know if got worse after that for a while - I havent been back in alot of years. However I hear from alot of tourists that they've enjoyed visiting the place, so I thought I'd mention it. I loved living there and I've never even been a pot smoker

Whee! I checked out the list of desired occupations and they want pharmacists/chemists (the bf), psychologists, teachers, people in marketing (all things I might want to end up doing), and even hairstylists/bakers (easy enough as a fallback).

    Mwahaha....

Coming to the US is SO much easier than going to Aus...

Yep getting a PR for Aussie is hard work.... but getting a spousal PR for the Empress for Australia was nothing compared to the dificulites I've had with US Immigration... they denied us even the chance to visit twice. Don't ever get me started on that one.... it still angers me till this day.

Spousal visa for US was hard work, and a MPIA.

If anyone ever meets those people in that green card movie, or shows about marrying to just get a visa, let them know they are on my 'list'. (cue evil Ming the Merciless laughter) It makes it hard for those that are actually married and do love eachother. The grass ain't that green here, but it is greaner than many others.

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"
