    Default Shin Splints...

I think this is what I have...ever since I sprained my ankle (about 5yrs ago) I get the most excruciating pain in my legs. I only get the pain when I wear flats, or am barefoot. Oh, and I can't walk for very long distance, or run...If I do, it feels like the bottom sides of my legs ( it's like the side of my leg, right in between my calf muscle and front of my leg) are on fire. Is this shin splints or something else? Oh, and I dont have any pain when I wear heels..only flats.

Well shin splints are damage to the muscles connected to the shin, and since that's where you're experiencing the pain, it's safe to say that's probably it.

As far as feeling pain only when in flats...that would have to do with how your muscle healed. Could be that you reinjured the muscles while you were a dancer and in wearing heels so much your muscles healed in that position.

My shin splints came from dancing. From the days where we didn't wear platforms. To this day, it kills me to walk around in flats for a lengthy period of time.

My doctor told me to take time off to let it heal, then gave me stretches to do to keep it flexible. So, while it didn't hurt as much...it still never truly healed properly I guess.

Best thing for you to do (dr. also told me this) is to never spend too much time in one heel height. Switch off. When you're not working wear flats (sneaks are best because of the support). While you're working, if you get the chance to slip your shoes off, roll your ankles around a bit. Keep everything flexible.

Hope this info helped even a little. Feel better because they sure are a bitch!!!

I used to get these all the time from playing sports, especailly running track. Stretch them by pointing your toes up and down repeatedly. For your ankle try spelling out the ABC's with your foot....sounds funny but it works.

Yep, you probably reinjured it and it healed "right" in the stripper shoe.

You may also want to check to make sure you have proper arch support, as well.

Properly stretching out (slowly) the muscles will help eleviate that pain.

I just tried this..it hurts I'll keep doing it if this means I'll heal it though. How long should I be doing this "stretch" for...

do it for 30 sec each per foot....repeat a few times and follow up with a deep massage on your shin.

Are you sure you're not suffering from shortened achilles tendons like I am?

You can get this from constantly wearing high heels over long periods of time. This condition can easily creep up on you without you noticing at first as you may subconsciously start walking on your toes when bare foot and preferring heels over flats. I cannot walk in flats or even lower heels for long without getting major pain in my calves.

The orthopedic specialist who diagnosed me with severely shortened achilles tendons suggested physical therapy. But since that would also mean giving up on wearing heels alltogether, and it's just not an option for me. Not just for professional reasons but also for me personally as I'm just 5'2" tall. So I actually feel most comfortable in 5 inch heels. I wish they had sneakers with heels, that would make my gym sessions more comfortable.

I've been told that the propensity to develop this condition can vary with your genetic makeup. A good friend of mine started being affected within just nine months. She had started a job where she was required to wear heels and then got used to wearing them after hours and around the house as well.

Hmmm I've done this since I was a child. I can walk on my tip toes..I still do as an adult. My family even has me on videotape (I wanted to be a ballerina) dancing on my tip toes..
