    Default 5-HTP experiences?

Picked up two bottles of this stuff (Natrol, 100 mg) from GNC a day ago. Can't say if it's working or not. I did get flushed and hot for about an hour yesturday, the first day I took it. But got the gym last night and had a fine workout--no problems.

Curious if anyone here has tried 5-HTP and their experiences with same.

I started a thread about it a while back. I take Effexor which is an anti-depressant. The stuff started to give what I think was serotonin syndrome because it was combined with the Effexor. But the 5-HTP alone shouldn't hurt you and will take a couple of weeks before you notice a significant difference. Just don't mix it with any other anti-depressants, St. Johns Wart or Kava.

Thanks, Green. Yes, I was aware of this drug-combo warning before I bought the stuff.

I took it last year, and it did work for me, after only one week I could tell I was feeling better.

I had my bf start taking it because he was on coke and depressed, he started taking it about 3 months ago, and he hasn't done any coke ever since. Now I don't think it was only the 5-htp but it sure helped!

Never did 5-htp, but I've frequently used Melatonin as a sleep aid (I think it's a precursor to the enzyme). Never had any problem and it did help put me to sleep after 15-20 minutes.

Never have had trouble going to sleep. Sleep is my best thing, you could say. Rather, lack of energy/depression has hounded me since I was a teenager.

Lately, however, I've been diligent about working out (like 5 days a week), getting sleep, avoiding booze and, most recently, hitting a tanning bed once or twice a week. This all seems to be helping. So far, I've ducked the need to go back on some doctor-prescribed antidepressant.

I've tried it, and I loved it. Even my best friend who moved to AZ could tell I was in a better state of mind while just talking to her over the phone. I didn't even tell anyone I was going on it, not because I was keeping it a secret or anything, I just never thought to bring it up, and I kept hearing " wow, your in a good mood lately", or, " where did all your energy come from?" etc.

I loved it, and I got mine from vitamin shop for like $34....... but, I tried some off brand from Walgreens for like $9 or so, it didn't work very well at all. I'll eventually go back on, but I hate having to drive all the way to vitamine shop and spending the money, so I've been putting it off for a while.

we used to use it as a seritonin uptake after a night on E.

havent used it since then, but it seemd to do the job back in those days.

i did have a few capsuals once, to try and sleep, and ended up hallucinationg so bad it scared me off 5-htp for good! haha

i guess if your using it was an antidepressent, youd expect different results tho.

I was using this before I switched to fish oil. I liked it, the nice thing is it works faster than any other natural anti-depressant I've tried.

Chicagoeditor, it may be easier to take at night.... I havn't taken it in a while, but I remember that it worked more than very well, but it did make me drowsy if I took it in the morning.... I think mine had valarian in it as well though.... but all of the ones I've looked at do.

I just picked this stuff up today, and the GNC guy told me that it would help me with the mental stress that makes me want to crawl into bed and sleep. So I'm trying to take it not to sleep....any thoughts on this?

I'm a total skeptic when it comes to herbal remedies, but with so many positive reviews on here I decided to try this stuff. I've been on it for about 2 weeks and I must say it really does work! My anxiety level is way down, stuff that I used to dread doing because of my anxiety is now hardly a blip on the radar. AND, it's great for my appetite. Rather than finish a full plate of food out of boredom, or piggyness, I feel satisfied halfway through a plate and have no qualms about pushing the rest of my food away. I have an overall sense of well being that I haven't had in a long time. I've been on Celexa, Wellbutrin, and PAxil before, but 5htp actually works better---and without any side effects(that I can detect thus far). And unlike an Rx, the 5htp is not hurting my sex drive, I feel like my libido has actually increased.
If anyone is thinking about trying this stuff, DO IT! It's wonderful. I use the Natrol brand available at walgreens,

Okay! Now we're paying attention. Actually, I've noticed the same. General well-being, calm and libido up a tick or two.

Does anyone know how this stuff would interact with lexapro(a form of celexa)?

OK, you've convinced me. I'm gonna pick some up, b/c you've basically described me right now as far as anxiety and boredom eating, etc. Thanks for posting your thoughts on it.

me too for all of these and it started working that way the first day (today is day four. I dig that I push food away, or that I'm just not interested in eating unless I'm hungry-- and even then it's pretty rare to have crappy food. I'd rather have good protein.

There's a really good book on 5-HTP and other amino acid therapies called "The Mood Cure" by Julia Ross. I'm studying holistic nutrition and have gone to her seminar. It's pretty interesting and simple, her book has a questioniere section in the front to see if and what amino acids you may need. According to her, start with 50mg in midafternoon (because 5HTP converts to melatonin which helps with sleep, may cause sleepiness in some individual), if you don't get benefit in 1 hour, go up to two. You can add third if needed in another hour, and so on. Basically the dose would depend on the individual. Also, after you have your set dose, add the same amount at bedtime if you have sleep problems. And it's okay to take with St. John's wort. If you are on anti-depressants, ask your dr. but she has suggested that you may be able to cut down the dose with amino acid therapy. Personally, I love playing with amino acids. They work quick, and usually side-effeect-less. Your body will tell you if you are really in need of it or not.
