    Breathing

Okay, I know you guys are going to tell me to see a doctor... but I have and she said nothing was wrong with me. Or... she ran a buttload of tests and found something wrong with my liver (this was over a year ago) and decided that my breathing thing was linked to my high liver levels... I eventually just stopped going in because I got tired of them taking blood every week... blah blah blah. On with it.

Okay, I've been having trouble breathing for the past week or so. It's like I can't take in a whole breath. I feel like I have a metal band strapped around my ribs, right under my boobs. Sometimes it makes me dizzy. It gets worse when I'm drinking. I make myself yawn sometimes so I can get a full breath. Wtf is going on?! I exersize regularly. Tae Kwan Do and Yoga. No running... Whenever I DO breathe hard form exersize, it usually seems to HELP.

OH goodness. I am the EXACT same way. Like no matter how hard you breathe in it only goes to the top of your lungs. Sometimes I have to like lean over and grab onto something and use all of my muscles to force air down my lungs. I just always assumed it was asthma...But that's weird about the liver thing. Maybe I should go to the doctor too. I almost blacked out the other day. THis happens to me at some point every single day. I'm glad I"m not the only one. I want to go to the doctor now too.

This happens to me too. I don't think it's ever affected me to the point of almost blacking out, but it's very uncomfortable, nonetheless. I've never went to the Doc about it, so, sorry, I can't help you there. If you do figure out what is causing this though, please let us know!

Btw, I have no other health problems besides a right nephrectomy (kidney removal). No asthma, non smoker, light drinker, etc...

Or you could be breathing improperly. If you take a "real" full breath, then your abdomen should balloon out. Taking a "false" deep breath just moves your chest. The lungs are muscles and need to be exercised daily. If you are taking "real" full breaths and you are still having problems breathing, then you may have a chest cold. If it is on-going, then you may want to go in for chest x-rays to rule out any lung problems.

That sounds very much like how i feel when i am about to get a panbic attack. It's like i have to try really hard to breathe and it only goes to the top of my lungs.
Are you stressed just now or an anxious person?
I find at those timed its tempting to breathe faster, which just makes matters worse, but if you relax and try to breathe in for four then out for four very slowly it subsides after a while.
that is only if it is an anxiety related problem though.

    It sounds almost like asthma.
Have you looked into The Butekyo method for breathing? I have learnt a couple of basic things and am finding it helps alot with asthma and just to breath properly - alot of people don't breath properly, especially dancers according to my Dr who has written a book on the subject and teaches it.
Getting a second or even third opinion from a different Dr might be worth doing.

Venus is right. You might need to extend your belly. When you try -really hard- to take a deep breath and you do it through your ribcage, there is only so much you can breath in because... well, your ribcage is in the way.

I get this sometimes too, but I relate it with stress and depression. If they're not finding anything (oh yes, going through tests without results is exhausting and expensive) this might very well be it.

I think that it could be a sign of panic and aniexty. I know exactly what you are talking about and it would happen to me right before I would have a panic attack. I have learned to control it now though by taking long slow breaths and breathing through my nose.

Do you wheeze? Get someone to listen to your lungs with a stethescope, if you can. Or just listen very hard to your deep breathing. If there's any wheezing or rattling, you could have asthma, and it can KILL you. Don't take asthma lightly. Asthma attacks are one of the top killers of young women.

I get Asthma from time to time - it sounds like how you are feeling.

    A few things that help:

Avoid all dairy and leavened bread - it increases the mucous levels in your body. It'll take a couple of days until you feel the effects. Now I can feel myself breathing harder the day after just eating a few slices of cheese.

Moist air helps - try one of those humidifiers with some Eucalyptus oil - it opens up the lungs.

The breathing methods suggested all help. Also remember to try to breathe through your nose. Do deep breathing exercises a couple of times a day to work on expanding your lung capacity over time - be patient.

Remember, when your body is stressed at all, mouth breathing causes your body to release adrenaline and endorphines which puts you in a 'panick' mode. When deep breathing, inhale through your nose to a count of 5 and then slowly exhale to a count of 10. This will calm your body.

"Life is not about the number of breaths you take.
It's about those moments which leave you breathless."

No weezing, I don't smoke and I'm not anemic. I was thinking it was anxiety, also. I told my friend about it and she said she gets like that when she's feeling really anxious. I'm going to try the belly out breathing. That seems to help a bit, thanks.

I'm actually on anti-anxiety meds to control this same thing (and a host of other symptoms). If you aren't cool with meds (and you may not need them if this is the only major symptom, or even if it isn't), do whatever you can to control the stress in your life. Regular hard exercise helps, as does daily yoga (it doesn't have to be a full workout, just enough to help you refocus and balance). I'm also trying to use the FlyLady method of getting the crap out of my life (www.flylady.net) to simplify, organize, and therefore destress.

And like a lot of people have been saying, try practicing breathing deeply, all the way down to your pelvis. When I take the time to breathe, I realize how shallowly I'm usually breathing -- I can feel all my stomach muscles stretch way out as I pull air down. And definitely keep an eye on it to make sure that it isn't getting worse or presenting with other symptoms -- deep respiratory infections and asthma are all big concerns.

I think that the excercise helping lends itself to the anxiety theory. If excercise helps, something like 5HTP might help too.

Sometimes I have trouble breathing, like the air won't stay in my chest. I assumed it was either ashtma or allergies. I know I have some kind of allergies and a pulmonologist I used to date told me I had some kind of ashtma but not the kind that you have attacks. either way, I haven't felt it was worth spending money to find out what was wrong. What the pulmonologist told me though was that the type of asthma I have (can't recall what he called it) would make it so that if I run or exert myself I'll be able to breath fine but after I stop running or exercising that is when I would wheeze, which seems to be true.
