Angry I hate my fiance's doctor (long)

    Okay, beginning rant.

My fiance works management for Walmart (yes, he and I both know they're evil and he's looking for something else, but what can you do?). Due to the constant level of stress over the past 6 years and the fact that they work him 60-70 hours (overnights! joy!) and pay him for 40, he's developed stress-related conditions. They include: migraines (every freakin day), back spasms (every other freakin day) and ulcers (whenever he eats anything he likes).

Right now, he's been seeing a massage therapist and the migraines have slowed down and no back spasms since. Woot. Unfortunately, his massage therapist is currently on a two-week trip to Florida to donate her time massaging soldiers wounded in combat (she's just awesome). So, we've been talking to his doctor to find out if there's some way to medically help the healing process.

The doctor's an ass. He's close-minded and thinks that massage therapy does nothing. We were basically chided for wasting our money and time. So the doctor, in his infinite wisdom, prescribed some pills (because pills fix everything). The pills don't even blunt the pain of his migraines, which are still happening every freakin day. He also wants my fiance to see a shrink. Now, I agree that shrinks can be great, but IMO this is not a case where he needs a shrink. Stress management councelor, maybe. Therapy is refused. Oh, and evil doctor-man will not sign a Leave of Absence for Walmart, which means that there is no money from Walmart while he takes this time off. The doctor seems to think one can function at a high-stress job with a blinding migraine.

So a week after the pills aren't doing shit, we go back to see the doctor. The old pills are thrown away and the new pills are prescribed. The new pills are for depression. Major depression. I guess he forgot to tell us that. And we got new pain meds for tension headaches. Um, doesn't my fiance have migraines? You know, the things that aren't tension headaches? The good: we finally got the LOA signed, giving him 2 weeks. The bad: the meds are supposed to take 2 weeks to work. And the doctor will not give us a referral for a second opinion until he sees if the drugs work.

I hate this man. I hate him with his stupid white coat and "I know best" smile. I hate him. Grar!!!!

I had the same type doctor when I had migraines!
GET HIM OFF THE ANTI-DEPRESSANTS NOW! I was put on them for my migraines and it not only screwed up the chemical balance in my body, but had horrible nightmares. (I would wake up in tears and call my mom!) The symptoms showed up in 5 days! (The psychologist I was seeing at the time decided that it couldn't possibly be the meds because it was only five days into the treatment. Yeah, not seeing her anymore.) You could, no, you SHOULD report this doctor to the board of medicine, or whoever it is that's head honcho. You are paying him. He is, essentially, YOUR EMPLOYEE. He should be doing what YOU say. (It sounds like you're on an HMO. I would ask to switch primary care providers and explain why.)

I would reccommend seeing a psychologist that specializes in something called bio-feedback. It's a fantabulous way to help deal with all the psycho things your body does during a migraine.

In the end I had to see a Preventative Medicine doctor to figure out how to get rid of my migraines. Turns out, my problem was a FOOD ALLERGY. She figured it out in the first fifteen minutes of my first visit! Four years of going to the white coated bastards with no results. (But a lot of deciding what my symptoms were!)

    GOOD LUCK!

wow, Rozz, i don't even know where to start....first off, why is walmart only paying him for 40 hours if he's working much more than that? isn't that shit illegal? i understand that sometimes you have to work where you have to, but damn....is there any place he could lodge a complaint?

on to the migraine issue...what were the old pills he was taking? different things work for different people for migraines, and there are a variety of pills used to treat them. obviously, the doctor who thinks that someone with a migraine should be able to work as normal has never had one. THAT is fucked up. personally, when i have a migraine, i take an imitrex pill, and it usually kills it. it's not a painkiller, but it targets the blood vessels that cause my migraines. not for everyone though.

as for painkillers, what did they give him? for some people, they work. same thing with the antidepressants...what did they give him? some docs use them for off-label problems, such as migrains. although, i think antidepressants are used way too much for things that they should not be prescribed for. topomax is a popular migraine preventative med...even though it's an anticonvolsant technically, for some people it works. for me, all of those off-label things never worked. the doc could be trying all sorts of options.

i agree that the massage therapy could be useful for your fiance....if it works, then enough said. don't listen to that stupid doc. even if the effect is placebo, it's helping your fiance. i once had a doc that tried to give me antidepressants for headaches too, and i said no....i don't react well to any type of antidepressant, and don't need it.

i hope you find something that works for him. since the doc doesn't want to do the referral thing....have your fiance tell him that the new antidepressant pill is causing a really bad side effect like extreme mood swings, depression, etc....for some people, especially those who are not depressed, these meds are torture.

Isn't there anyway to switch doctors? I'd say dump this one. You shouldn't need a referral to see another primary care physician.

i want to echo kittykat's hatred of antidepressants. for some people, those who are depressed, they are lifesavers, and good for them. however, i think doctors and BigPharma are pushing antidepressants on people who really don't need them. for anxiety, pain management, headaches, etc. for some people this off-label stuff works, and, again, good for them. however, some doctors push these pills ahead of others that would really work.

many years ago, i had PTSD symptoms, and tried pretty much every anti-D on the market afterwards. i couldn't take them for more than a day or two because they messed with my emotions so bad. then i had one idiot therapist tell me that i MUST be bipolar because i had a negative reaction to antidepressants. never mind that i've never been manic....so she wanted to put me on antipsychotics and bipolar meds, things with cognitive impairment as side effects. nope. i told her that my previous doc had gotten it right (who i couldn't see anymore for insurance reasons): i needed a non-addictive sleeping pill, and a script for an anti-anxiety pill for a panic attack, something i would not take every day, and something that i had taken before and never gotten addicted to (ativan...low dose, no bad side effects, never any problem). she wouldn't do it, so i found someone new.

i know this has turned into my own personal rant against stupid doctors. i think that what some doctors fail to realize is, that, despite their degrees and years of learning, practice, etc., that many people know their own bodies...they are the ones taking the pills, doing the therapy, exercises and undergoing the procedures. this gives them a unique perspective that a doctor can either utilize to help the patient, or arrogantly ignore. that's what seperates good docs from bad.

i hope you find a good doc.

I went through biofeedback for migraines. It didn't do shit for me and cost a ton of money. If the massage is working, stick with it. However, it really sounds like the cure will be a new job. his body is trying to tell him something. I get migraines usually when I am stressed beyond what I can handle and it's my body's way of saying slow down.

His antidepressant: Amitriptyline. It's a tricyclic antidepressant for endogenous depression. Also for chronic pain, so sayeth the net. Also has the worst side effects. Woot. I'm so glad he's on it now.

His painkiller: Butalbital (basically tylenol), used for tension headaches.

I have a hatred for Drs periodi I feel your frustration. Good luck - is there not another massage or alternative therapist he could go to for the time being?
I hope you can find something to help, all those pills are shit considering he was getting relief naturally before!

Oh! I also want to reccommend accupuncture. (It barely hurt me at all and I'm deathly afraid of needles.) Accupuncture reduced my constant migraine enough that I could function at school. It was a lifesaver.

And I was on amytriptaline too. It didn't do anything. Period. My theory is that doctors just say that it treats pain but really just use it as a placebo on patients who they think are faking it.
(The antidepressant I was talking about earlier that gave me nightmares was Zoloft. Still don't know why I was on it!)
