Default Writing a script about a stripper?...

    This is just a thought...

A while back, I was thinking of writing a script about a stripper. I know it's not original and 'm sure alot of people have already written it. I'm definitely assuming "Yekhefah" has beaten me to it. I put the thought on hold.

I believe( <--I tend to believe alot), I'm capable of creating a better storyline than

"Strip Tease" "Show Girls" "Player's Club"..whatelse...anyone like to chime in.

I know there are amazing true stories etc. I haven't seen anyone seriouly tap into this topic. A serious, dramatic tone of this industry/job. "Leaving Las Vegas" had some relations.

The biggest problem for this type of film is...
-People's misperception on wanting to see tits and ass.
-I believe Tits and Ass distracts the content of the film<--the irony.

When I write/research a script about this topic...I don't think I will ever visually show the "dancing" aspect of the character's life.<---work around it, with subtle indirect implications like *she enters the apartment, sits on the couch and soaks her feet in warm water*

People misinterpret occupations by one's social generalizations.

So, all this time, my film could be showing the internal aspects of the female's character whether she's part of the "Peace Corps" or going through tough times. By the end of the film you've fallen in love with the character and BAMN at the end of the film...she's on the pole dancing.

    I'm just talkin...

It sounds good - I wish someone would do this.
Ive had very loose ideas on writing for a long time, but I think i shall be an old, old woman before i ever get anything solid down on paper.

I'll write something, as I am sad that I am forgetting some of the best times of my life, when I started dancing. Only it didn't seem that way then...you know how life is...

Americans have been so uptight about sex for so long, any story with about a stripper is over-colored by sexuality. SEX SEX SEX. What a double-edged storytelling sword.

Yea, people have written scripts about strippers. Usually they suck. Like Show Girls or some clap trap shit like that.

    Write a real script.

For example, in Independence Day, the character Will Smith portrays is dating a dancer portrayed by Vivica Fox. This dancer happens to also save the life of a president's daughter and bring the president's wife back to him before she dies. Unfortunately, the current social structure of the world needed to be so badly damaged by an alien invasion for such a plot twist to even appear!

The point is though, that maybe two or three minutes of screen time was used to develop this portion of her character - the rest of it was the constitution and courage of her character when facing down a threat not in the strip club.

If you focus on making it about a "stripper" you need to be careful not to make it a "stripper movie." No one takes those seriously - hell - even a movie with an A list actress like Demi Moore couldn't make it fly.

^^^ I think the Vivica Fox stripper in Independence Day was one of the best portrayals of a movie stripper ever. Her job had just enough mention and screen time as anyone else's, just enough to make a well-rounded character, and her summation of it was excellent. I didn't appreciate it when I first saw it, but I like it now. That writer knows a lot of strippers.

I liked the Natalie Portman character in Closer. I mean, she was a messed up young woman, and I suppose that could be seen as perpetuating the stripper as 'messed up chick' stereotype...but, it's not an unfounded portrayal (not all are like that, but yeah, some are). She was emotionally unstable, but also clever and not a whole lot more manipulative than any of the other characters. (ie- her stripper I found morally > than nasty dermatologist).

I would love to see something about a woman who is in seminary and plans on "saving" sex workers by visiting strip clubs, and discovers that strippers are actually providing a spiritual outlet for the lonely men that visit those clubs.

We as dancers are frequently in the role of "spritiual advisor" to our customers. They come to the club to escape after a tragety in their lives. Be it a death in the family, divorce, a job loss or something as simple as having to put their favorite pet down.

She decides to take the plunge and become a stripper and form her own kind of ministry to the patrons of the club as well as to the other dancers and employees. Her stage name would have to be "Mary", of course!

Of course the antagonism comes in when the seminary she attends gets wind of her impromptu "mission" and she must plead her case to continue her studies.

She ends up blackballed from any theological school and begins her own ministry directed to dancers and other sex workers encouraging them to spread the joy and love of god through their profession as an exotic dancer.

Maybe the title could be "Teaching the naked soul" or something.

The only GOOD script I've ever seen about what we do was for a local play. I helped with it as a consultant because I wanted to see us portrayed well. And we were!

I'm writing one currently based VERY loosely on my novel. I can't talk much about it but Yek can vouch for me.

"Closer" did make it clear that Alice (Natalie Portman) went back to stripping after her heart had been broken, so the movie does color the job in an indifferent/cynical light......(She was a waitress while living with Dan [Jude Law].) In the VIP room scene, Larry (Clive Owen) has a mean rant about dancers & SCs.
I still liked the movie though.

I just saw 'Closer'...I was half asleep, so I might have missed some stuff, but I liked how in the VIP room scene, Larry tries to take control by 'making' her strip and show her junk, but by her doing it (without hesitation, for the money), she actually doesn't appear to give up any power at all, and just frustrates him further. Yeah.

I think "Closer" is probably the best portrayal out there, for all the reasons listed above. Very nuanced and rounded character - flawed, but not stereotypically 'damaged'. I know some people liked "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" and it has its good points, but I wish not every character had to be lifted from the DSM-III.

What I wanted to point out was another film that I actually think is great, just a little indie film (Peter Saarsgard and all) with a stripper and customer relationship at the center: "The Center of the World". http://imdb.com/title/tt0240402/ Check it out!

By the way, I really like your premise, supermaruchi, in that you pick up little clues and cues along the way, but it focuses on the rest of her life instead of being sensationalistic about the titty bar shots. Great idea! I kind of think that the big reveal maybe ought to happen before the VERY tail end of the film, though, like maybe 3/4 of the way through? To give the audience a chance to digest it and take that part of her character in, sort of balancing this new info against the perceptions they had already had. (Plus you don't want to be too M. Night Shyamalan-goes-Showgirls about the big twist ) Only my $0.02.

You also need to throw some drama in there with ${bouncer}, ${john}, and ${drunkard}.

May I also suggest adding #!/bin/bash at the beginning in version
