Now I want to know what the essay is about, lol...

Freshwater management issues in Canada's hydroelectric power industry vs. management of freshwater salinity in Australia's agricultural industry.
yes, riveting. Yes, same one I was working on 2 weeks ago. *sigh*

Woo! I bet that's a great read!![]()

OK, hydroelectric--that pretty much means dams with turbines for power generation, right? How does this harmfully effect the water passing through?
And salinity is the salt content, so agriculture adds salinity in Australia? More than elsewhere? Or is there more salinity in the freshwater there already?
I know, shut up with the questions, lol...

If you want a good laugh, take a look at California's Water & Energy Management, History Of. It's a scream, really. You could even work that ass-backward situation into your essay as a comparison......Mother Jones did a great article on the California Salt Loop that made me want to cry.
That's alright I understand where you are coming from. I should be studying for my securities licensing. BORING.

Yeah, I've got a 5000 word ethics paper looming, and here I am. Comme toujours.

Haha!! I'm supposed to be writing a paper too. But I submitted a proposal to write about the campus subculture of girls who strip through college. So I'm supposed to be here!
I still don't want to actually write it though. Blech.

Well, nothing but water gets through. So fish that migrate from the ocean (especially salmon) can't get past the dams, and people who eat fish (especially salmon) can't eat them. Dams were actually used as a genocidal tactic against Native Americans by the US Government. But salmon (and similar) aren't just food for people, when they die, which they do in huge numbers and rot and decompose on the shores, it provides essential nutrients for the forest around the rivers. It's really more complex then that tho, and involves a lot more than salmon.Originally Posted by Djoser
Meanwhile, the river downstream from the dam is deprived of silt, which is essential as a habitat and for holding things together.
Basically, the whole river (and by extension everyone who depends on it) dies so you can have electricity.
Scarlett, have you read Endgame by Derrick Jensen? He has a lot of good stuff (and quotable quotes) about dams, even if he might not be considered mainstream...
Blah, I'm supposed to be reading a book on FDR. The words are blurring together... Damn this beer.![]()

Meh, put it off. If I could write a 40 page paper on Pressure Oxidation of Sulphide Minerals in two weeks, you can write your paper while on Stripperweb. I have faith in you.

This happen to me once! This is what you have to do! Althought I need to be studying for my test tomorrow! Actually I should be sleep right now! Ok I am guilty of staying up late on stripper web. 1) what class is this?
2) i dont get how the topics are related.
Freshwater management issues in Canada's hydroelectric power industry vs. management of freshwater salinity in Australia's agricultural industry.
which fresh water management issues in canada?
3) just get started.
find 6 sources. mix them together and you'll by default add your own stuff and call it a day.
wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salinity_in_Australia
Salinity on land and in fresh water is a byproduct of the European farming practices which replaced native vegetation with shallow-rooted crops and pastures in Australia. Rising groundwater levels, caused by these farming practices, are bringing with them dissolved salts which were stored in the soil. Salt is being transported to the root-zones of remnant vegetation, crops, pastures, and directly into wetlands, streams and river systems. The rising water tables are also affecting our rural infrastructure including buildings, roads, pipes and underground cables. Salinity reduces agricultural productivity and biodiversity in non-farm areas, the goals of saline land management are to stabilise and reverse the effects of salinity, improving water quality and supply.
perhaps useless and a waste of time but a Canadian water policy federal government publication: http://www.ec.gc.ca/Water/en/info/pu...edpol.htm#7.11
[no doubt very uninteresting but once i heard a similar problem in Houston. too much water being pumped out of the ground, lowering the water table i believe causing salty ocean water to come inland. solution was to pump out less water.]
4) why not get everyone to add a sentence and keep it going.

Space Cadet remind me to find you when I'm dedicated to SW and NOT dedicated to Psychology or whatnot. Why is it SOO hard to click the x? Cause you're sooo sure someone just said something wonderful, and everyone is laughing and chatting all over the place without you and...oh hell maybe I'll just take a peek....wait...psychology what? Its already time for class? Hmm..

2) It's a compare and contrast. Main issue for my purposes is the redistribution of water for other thermal power uses (and manufacturing and agriculture) after water is redirected by damming...resulting in increased consumption (waste)...it's really boring. It's not very complex, I'm just not knowledgeable enough about the topic to make it sound simple![]()
3) It's mostly done...
4) but thank you. My prof would kill me if I used Wikipedia, btw.

There should be an ongoing thread for homework. I've actually come on here quite a few times to ask for homework help or just general bitchery. Rules: don't ask ANYONE here to fill out a survey unless you've read the ASA's guidelines on human research subjects.
Anyway - since we're on the topic - Scarlett, can you explain to me, like I'm 6 exactly what chlorine monoxide is and where it comes from? I realize this may sound dumb, but my background is in English lit, and when I was in high school in Ontario we only had to take science up until Grade 10
I have taught that the sky in all its zones is mortal and its substance was formed by a process of birth
Ha, oh crap, you're testing me? I don't know much about chlorine monoxide.
1. Hairspray sprayed, CFCs released (CFC= chlorofluorocarbon)
2. UV light reacts with CFCs, forms a Cl free radical (a free radical is an atom that is especially reactive because it has an unpaired electron...electrons really prefer to be paired, so when they're not, the atom goes on the prowl for an electron to share or steal).
3. The Cl free radical (Cl+) meets ozone (O3), takes ones of it's oxygen atoms (to share electron with) and forms ClO. That's Chlorine Monoxide.
4. Later, the ClO will invariably collide with a leftover O, forming O2 and leaving a Cl free radical, and bringing us back to step 3. It's cyclical like that.
This whole process is what destroys the ozone layer.
Do you need more? Try wikipedia (muahaha)

Heh, I'm supposed to be writing a paper too. I'm slacking, big time. And I am, for the record, using wikipediahehe
I believe you Dottie and you have my support

I wasn't insulting you, Cadet, I was complimenting your response and insulting my own abilities to get off of SW. Saying I need to find you when I get on here and can't get off but should be writing an essay. That's all.Originally Posted by space_Cadet_28
