Toxic carrot juice paralyzes 2 residents in T.O.

Two Toronto residents are paralyzed in hospital after they drank toxic carrot juice that was recalled across North America last week, Toronto Public Health has confirmed.
One of the products recalled was Bolthouse Farms 100% Carrot Juice.
The juice, produced by Bolthouse Farms in Bakersfield, Calif., was ordered off shelves Sept. 30 after four cases of botulism were linked to toxic carrot juice in the United States.
Dr. Elizabeth Rea, an associate medical officer of health, told the Toronto Star that lab test results confirmed the carrot juice purchased in Toronto sometime last month and consumed by the Toronto patients was positive for the botulism toxin.
Bolthouse Farms' 100 per cent Carrot Juice, Earthbound Farm Organic Carrot Juice and President's Choice Organics 100 per cent Pure Carrot Juice with a best-before date before Nov. 11 have been recalled.
Botulism can cause paralysis and, in severe cases, the paralysis can restrict breathing capabilities, forcing patients onto ventilators.
Rea wouldn't confirm whether the two Toronto patients are on ventilators, the Toronto Star reported.
Symptoms of botulism include blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and paralysis.
About 10 per cent of people who fall ill from botulism die.
Early treatment is a must, Toronto Public Health said.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns that contaminated food may not look or even smell like it has spoiled.
