    Default Am I Over Cautious?

I was formerly a medic in the army. While I was in Ft. Sam Houston training at the ER I wittnessed 5 dancers being brought in after they had been mugged, beatin, and rapped. While I was in the ER on Ft Carson i saw 2 more that had the same fate befall them. I try to caution someone I care about to be careful and that I honestly would like her to quit.

My question to anyone who cares:

Am I Over Reacting or am I justified in my request? Am I wrong to care this much that even though I met this woman at the club I want her to quit? Please shed some light on this for me.

While I have had some unpleasant brushes with hazard during my stripper career, I have to say those calamities also befall random people who leave the bar too late, too drunk and not cautious enough. Honestly count all the other people who had the same happen to them, who came in on your shift at the hospital...they probably didn't catch your eye because they weren't young females.....Humans are instinctively driven to protect women of childbearing age & children.
I know you mean well but the probability of these things happening to the woman in question is marginal if she is careful.

I am sure you probably saw more than five police officers or fire fighters get injured as well. Would you caution them against their jobs?

    Yes.

Did you listen when your friends were worried about your safety when you wanted to join the army?

Well, you know - it's fall - a whole new set of high schoolers become adults and start asking questions about adult things they discover outside of mom's house.

The ever present cycle is quaint and relaxing knowing what to expect.

Same thing I was thinking along with construction workers, machinests, and so forth. If you are so concerned give her the protection she can use like a stun gun or mace. Sign her up for some self defense or martial art classes. Dont come off like you are telling her what to do...which is exactly what you are doing.

You can either help her or get out of her way and move on.

I think PLs know they are in over their heads - usually it is a queasy feeling in the stomach when they are pulling cash advances out of their credit cards to pay for what they know will be nothing special though they so badly want it to be.

This is simply... innocence. Enjoy it while you can because it is sure to go away!

I think it should be classified as "Pre-PLdom."

far more dangerous to be a cab driver. Mugged and beaten because it is a given that they are walking out of a building with hundreds of dollars in untraceable cash. Wouldn't it be better if a club could deposit the money into an account for you before you left the building. Course you would have to declare it and pay taxes on the amount as income and some may not want to do this.

Raped. Probably just because the opportunity was there after the mugging. Though some personalities do get an endorphine rush by holding another powerless.

Okay, the kinds of assault that I have been subjected to as a stripper are the kinds that you might describe as innocuous; as in there was definitely an application of unwelcome force on my person, but not such that would require medical help. E.g., a guy touching me inappropriately in such a way that was not understood to be a standard part of the dancer (i.e. there was no consent implicited understood or communicated). It is not pleasant. It can, alternately, make you angry, sad, reflective, resigned or philosophical or some combination thereof. But I doubt it is the kind of thing that you are warning your friend about. That is, incidentallly, the kind of assault that strippers are most often subject to - the kind in which consent is falsely and unjustifiably inferred rather than the kind in which we get beaten up. I have never known a stripper who had to go to the hospital to have injuries dealt with that she received in the course of being a stripper. And the sad fact is that women are sometimes assaulted - although the likelihood of a woman being assaulted by a stranger or near stranger on a dark street is disconcertingly lower than that for a man. Much of women's assault is, again, unfortunately, occurring within close and dependent relationships - boyfriends, husbands, fathers, brothers, fathers-in-law, etc. I doubt you'd counsel a woman to avoid having a boyfriend, however.

So - to be clear, you are not being over-cautious; or if you are, it is not really the issue. Your caution, however, has no direction and meaning.

Your heart is probably in the right place but the fact remains, life is a hazard no matter who you are, to a greater or lesser degree. We have a good friend who has been drugged three times recently and she has a co worker who was drugged at their club while working and raped later on the way home. It sucks, it pisses me off and there's nothing much I can do about it. I wish there was.

I have "healthy paranoia." Be on your toes at all times, you never know what could happen. I carry a knife and pepper spray all the time. Normal looking creepy people are everywhere!!
