it's funny this came up....I have to go in a couple of weeks. 8:00am. Why do they have court in the middle of the night?

Eep! I don't have to report until 8:45. It would just figure that it would happen during one of the busiest weeks I've had...well...probably all year!Originally Posted by Emily

Tell them you're a Jehovah's Witness and it's against your religion to participate in the government of "this system". It worked for me. THey actually removed me from ever having jury duty again.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.
Eek. I was selected for Jury Duty back in '96. They actually needed to see MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION that I had just gotten out of the Hospital after having brain surgery! Grr. That was in AZ.

I had jury duty and the judge did not allow any excuses. I saw people using just about every reason possable to get out of serving on the jury, the only ones let go were a few that had personal connection with someone involved with the case. The rest remained in the jury pool until the jury was selected.
It's completly up to the judge.
I report on Halloween. I wonder if I get excused by showing up in a Count Dracula costume. Grrrr, probably not.

Jeeze, I have to report for Jury Duty on 10/18
I have jury duty this week, but when I called last night they said I don't have to report. And of course now I have work coming up. If I have to report this week, I'll have to take an extension and go back in December. It pisses me off though, because I just got an email this morning and an old professor of mine might have some work for me this week... I really want to work with him for a variety of reasons, but jury duty might mess it up. Argh.
what, jury duty is this common? I've never known anyone who had to do it.
Feature costumes for sale!
it's an american thing...you've never seen this on TV or movies?
when you go to trial, you are judged by "a jury of your peers", which are people picked at random. It's the lawyer's jobs to convince the jury.
You get picked every few years or so.

I have not had to do jury duty yet, but a couple of years ago, I ran into the mail carrier who delivered the route that my old apartment was on. She said that a summons had arrived for me at that address. DMV records stated that I still lived there since I had not renewed my driver's license.
Since I wasn't living there anymore, they returned the summons to sender. I waited for them to forward it to my new address but apparently they don't do that here. I guess in the case of someone who had moved out of that court's jurisdiction, it wouldn't make sense to.
Former SCJ now in rehab.

I think everyone needs to do it at least once , I actually enjoyed it . Although I understand how it can mess up your plans .
Sometimes it can be fun, sometimes even pre-selection goes on forever. Good thing it pays so well. On the excuses note, a friend of mine claimed she was in a long term relationship with a prison inmate. She wasn't selected.

Well, I had to sit all day...I got out of it.
I'm really glad, though. I don't think I could have handled the case: aggravated sexual assault against a child (13 or younger).
yeah, you're lucky, they get really graphic sometimes. I'm working right now involving younger than 10. Some sick F*cks out there.

The case I sat on was a triple homicide and a minor was killed as well , it was a terrible thing . He was given the death sentence .

Did the judge do the sentencing? In this case the guy opted for the jury to give him his punishment (if convicted, that is).Originally Posted by CuriousJ

being a student is an exemption from jury duty.
i got a counterfeiter who used a xerox machine.
juries not judges have to give death in US, i believe.
I have been called twice since I've lived in tampa, which is three years. The first time somebody got me out of it and the second time I had moved and didn't get the notice until after I was supposed to go.
Jury duty can be really boring. A lot of jurors fall asleep.
When asked if you can make a fair judgement on the case or whatever it is they ask you you should just say noThats how Alex got out of it lol.

They just asked if I could deal a fair punishment in a "similar case" (since they can't give specifics) if the person was convicted...which ranges from five years probation to life in prison.Originally Posted by Cally
That's when I raised my card (signaling no). I could not give a convicted child abuser probation...NEVER.

At that time in Arizona the jury did not give decide the penalty it was done by the judge . Although the guy deserved this sentence it would still be tough for me to make that call .

I still remember, though, how angry my father was when my mother received a summons a number of years ago - after she had received one a year prior, and her doctor sent a letter that "Mrs. XYZ can't serve on a jury either now or ever again in the future, due to having suffered a massive stroke." My father then thought the people running the jury system in Los Angeles County were all incompetant morons after my mother's incapacity had been documented by her doctor.
the thing is...I could get out of jury duty, but I don't want to.
It sucks and all, but I feel like I want to do my part. I guess it feels like one of the things I can do to have an impact on the fucked up American justice system.
