Default Getting a flu shot this year?

I got one last year and thinking of passing on it (I get it free from the company, by the way) this year. What do others plan?

Should dancers get flu shots routinely? I'd say so, given all the close-up customer contact. Any doctors or soon-to-be doctors in the house?

I got one and I had the flu for a week. That was the only time in my 4 years of dancing that I got the flu, so I don't do it anymore.

For some reason I had a major local reaction to the flu shot. I am not allergic to eggs but the last time I took the shot the injection site got extremely inflammed. I had to go back to doc and get a shot of benadryl. I just try to take my vitamins, wash my hands frequently and get plenty of rest. Oh, and Airborne is great stuff if you feel a cold coming on.

Well, we get them free here (famously), but last year was the first year I ever got one because some local nurses or med people of some sort were in the club giving them out. That was just too convenient to ignore. The dj, waitresses, basically all of us got them because they were right there. Don't know about whatever outreach program thought they ought to go vaccinate some strippers, but I enjoyed not having to wait in line at the doctor's office (by the way, they didn't ask for my health card, so if any US dancers want some sneaky free flu shots...lol).

I don't know. I found my health the same. I got the worst flu of my life three years ago, and all I remember was rolling around in awful, feverish illness on the couch, seeing that same damn "getcher flu shot!" commercial from 'gov't of Ontario'. That was too cruel. So yeah, I'll probably get one again this year.

I honestly have to say I don't think I've ever had the flu. My son had it back in February, just in time for his birthday, and he was miserable. I plan on getting him a shot this season.

I think its important to wash your hands. To not touch your mouth or any other exposed membranes on your body with dirty hands before washing them. I really dont think I'll get one this year as I havent gotten one in past years. I just take my vitamins, exercise, wash my hands and try not to breathe around people who are sick. I havent had the flu in years. Colds however Ive gotten a few but nothing long lasting. Oh yea and keeping your house clean is a big help too.

Flu shots are stupid. You are vaccinated against only a minute amount of flu strains...and there are literally millions of different strains (and mutating) out there. If someone is concerned about the flu shot, they should just eat right, work out, take their vitamins and move on. I've heard of people (like Emily) who got the shot and got the flu anyways...or like greenidlady who got the shot and had worse reactions than ever getting the flu.

    I'll pass.

I've heard this argument, too. But I've also heard that being innoculated for any strain helps "soften" symptoms. Again, I'm not a doctor. I'm thinking to skip this year and taking my chances. Oh, oh, if anyone likes a terrifying non-fiction read, have a look at FLU, a book about the 1918 epidemic that killed 50-100 million worldwide. Nasty stuff.

Personally I think its a scam by the medical community. Once you start getting them regularly, then you need them. Don't start and you won't need 'em.

Five years ago I got a flu shot because my boss rode my ass to the hospital for one. Two days later, I had the flu.

But I also eat from the corner fish taco stands in Mexico and have a high metabolism. Whenever I get some bug, I get one night of deep sweats and it's gone.

I would not worry about the flu shot . I am more worry what food we will be able to eat in the future. Did you hear about the bad meat at portillo's, the green food. I am more scared of not having food to eat for the winter. When chance are if I take the Flu shot. I will get the Flu. If I don't take the shot. I will get the Flu.

I never got flu shots until, I had my battle with cancer and that was because my doctor insisted on it. Each time I would end up in bed sick as a dog for at least 3 weeks. This year there is no way I'm doing that to myself. My immune system is still not 100% yet. I learned about Sovereign Silver, which helps me tremendously.

Definatly not, I do do any vaccinations period.

Whole bunches of information about flu shot failiures, side effects, dangers etc below if anyone is interested (-:

Ingredients from: stacks more info here too!

INFLUENZA — Influenza virus, haemaglutinin and neuraminidase antigens A and B strains, gelatine, mercury, formaldehyde, sodium chloride, mashed chick embryos, neomycin.

FLU Vaccine Ingredients depend upon the manufacturer
FluVirin, FluShield, FluZone, FluMist, Etc, Etc.

All are made using egg or chicken protein
    Influenza viruses (most! are inactivated)
    Neomycin, polymyxin, gentamycin - antibiotics
Thimerosal [mercury] - a harmful preservative
    Betapropiolactone - a disinfectant
Nonoxynol - used to kill or stop growth of STDs
    Octoxinol 9 - a vaginal spermicide
Formaldehyde - embalming fluid used to kill viruses

Ingredient and associated risk list for the Fluzone vaccine:

Chick Embryo - this can be problematic for those allergic to eggs or egg products

Formaldehyde - (Embalming Fluid) Formaldehyde has been classified as a human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Research studies of workers exposed to formaldehyde have suggested an association between formaldehyde exposure and cancers of the nasal sinuses, nasopharynx, and brain, and possibly leukemia

Octoxinol-9 - This is a spermacide (kills sperm) Chills; confusion; dizziness; fever; lightheadedness; muscle aches; sunburn-like skin rash that is followed by peeling of the skin

Triton X-100 - Harmful if swallowed. Causes severe eye irritation. May be harmful if inhaled or in contact with skin. Toxicology not fully investigated. The product may contain traces of ethylene oxide or dioxane, which are probable human carcinogens.

Gelatin- Made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals.

Thimerisol (mercury derivative) - Several cases of acute mercury poisoning from thimerosal-containing products were found in the medical literature with total doses of thimerosal ranging from approximately 3 mg/kg (Your vaccine contains 25 ug per 5mL dose) to several hundred mg/kg These studies reported local necrosis, acute hemolysis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, acute renal tubular necrosis, and central nervous system injury including obtundation, coma, and death

Sodium Phosphate - Phosphates are slowly and incompletely absorbed when ingested, and seldom result in systemic effects. Such effects, however, have occurred Symptoms may include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, blood chemistry effects, heart disturbances and central nervous system effects. The toxicity of phosphates is because of their ability to sequester calcium. Irritant due to its acidic nature. May cause inflammation and pain on prolonged contact, especially with moist skin. May sequester calcium and cause calcium phosphate deposits in the kidneys.

Sodium Chloride(Salt) - Very large doses can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and prostration. Dehydration and congestion occur in most internal organs. Hypertonic salt solutions can produce violent inflammatory reactions in the gastrointestinal tract. May irritate damaged skin; absorption can occur with effects similar to those via ingestion.

when I used to work for companies where I got one for free I'd get one. I've been a contractor now for three years with no free flu shot and haven't gotten one. I get sick whether I get the shot or not.

^^^ The most common side effect of the flu shot is the flu.
I must post my vitamin C method of avoiding illness on here. I havent been sick with a cold or flu for more than a day for 15 years now because of it. I get a bit tired of repeating it over and all to people who dont really believe it can be done, but it really does work - 15 years is a bloody good run!

I can get a flu jab here in the UK for free due to the type of work I do (nursing) but I've never had one yet............everyone I know that has one ends up getting flu!

Touch wood so far, I've been really lucky and not got it.

Typically, tomorrow, I will probably wake up with flu symptoms!
