    Default Saline

does anyone know how to mix up saline solution? I have a sinus infection and my ENT told me to rinse with saline solution along with the antibotics I'm taking to treat it. Problem is I can't remeber the ratios, I know it's distilled water, salt and baking soda.

Go to the drug store and ask a pharmacist. We use to clean wounds with hydrogen peroxide and sterile water but you have to go to the drug store to get sterile water and of course hyrdogen peroxide if you don't have it already. But saline is basically sterile water. I would ask if he/she had an OTC saline nose spray good for sinus infections.

^ I wouldn't want to use hydrogen peroxide to rinse out the sinus cavities. That just sounds like it would hurt...

Here is the solution I use with the Neti Pot (you should get one if you don't have one already):

Mix a heaping ¼ tsp of finely ground non-iodized salt or a slightly rounded ½ tsp of coarsly ground salt in the neti pot with 8oz of warm water until the salt is completely dissolved.

    I use Kosher Salt.

If you want more info on Neti Pots, go here.

No, I was just saying that the mixture was what we use to clean infected areas. And that sterile water is basically saline. You can gargle with hydrogen peroxide though for a sore throat just don't swallow it.

Sterile water and saline aren't the same thing.

Saline is a solution of sodium chloride and sterile water.

Sterilized water is water that has had all transmissable agents (viruses, bacteria, etc) eliminated. This is generally done with heat (example - autoclave)but can also be done through UV or chemical treatement.

Well, there you go then. I was just saying what I used for infectious wounds. I am not a pharmacist. That's why I orginally suggested seeing one.

Just go to the store and buy Ocean Spray (Saline). No need to mix it your own, when you can just buy it. There are a lot of Saline sprays out there for sinus infections.

The difference between the Neti Pot and the Saline sprays is that the Neti Pot flushes out the sinus cavities...the sprays do not. While fine for a stuffy nose/cold, sometimes...for sinus infections, it is better to flush the sinus cavities out.

I did find what I was looking for, 8 oz. water, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda. I'm going to look into the Nedi Pot VG, I've heard of them before. Thanks ladies for your imput.
