Default Has North Korea done the Republicans a favor with its nuclear test?

A question I heard yesterday, raised by a guest-host on a radio talk show. I don't know if it will have an impact or not - but the host thought the NK nuke test has already knocked the Foley scandal to the back pages of newspapers and much less time on either television or radio.

I'm also perplexed as to why several Democrats would attempt to blame the GWB administration for this test, considering it was the prior administration which provided the raw materials allowing NK to conduct the nuclear testing - something which is documented, and could be run in campaign ads a couple of weeks prior to our elections.

The Foley scandal had more than it's share of the limelight. Actually, the Foley scandal cut short the attention given to Woodward's scathing book.

Actually, Rumsfeld sat on the board of the company that sold nuclear reactors to North Korea:

The Korean problem isn't going away. The current administration defers to China to handle the problem. The nuclear tests will only highlight the problems with this strategy. Although, frankly I don't know if we could have stopped Korea anyway. At the end of the day, we need to pressure South Korea and China to deal with the problem. They will need to support stricter economic sanctions.

The Republicans can take heart that the poll numbers look about as bad as they can possibly get right now, so there's about 30 days for a rebound and to rally their base with fear of change.

The biggest problem they have is the growing disillusionment of their strongest base - the evalengelicals.

My personal opinion only, but I don't believe the U.S. can pressure China for much of anything anymore. Due to how much of the the U.S. manufacturing industry has been outsourced to China, and the large number of U.S. debt instruments China has purchased. If the U.S. ever does enter another world war, with China as one of the enemies, it will be interesting to see if some CEOs of U.S.-headquartered multinationals end up being tried for treason. I doubt it, but I do believe the U.S. is far more constrained now as to available options in its relationshship with China than even ten years ago.

This test is also to divert attention from Iran's nuclear program LOL

tomorrow the Iranians will test their Shahab-5 missile ,and attention will be

diverted from NK and so on...they're playing a game you know what I mean.

If sanctions are to be imposed on NK, definitely China and Russia will veto it.

This is accurate, since bilateral diplomacy in the WJC administration failed utterly, and multilateral diplomacy in the GWB administration failed utterly.

I don't think that the test did any favors for the Republican party. Quite the opposite. It is yet another example of the world being less safe since they took controlrather than more safe.

I think North Korea is trying to tell old GW that he had better not mess with them. Right or wrong, North Korea see's it a self defense against the USA.

The worst part of all is that the innocent people of North Korea are the ones who will pay the biggest price of this nuke test. They already are so trapped and hungry as it is and sanctions will only make it worse.

It is a lose/lose situation all the way around.
