    Default dog stroke or tumor?

My ex's dog was hospitalized after collapsing. Although i am no longer with my ex, I loved that dog like my baby. I went over to see him (the dog) yesterday and he looks awful. The vets didn't diagnose anything. They said it would be around $2000 to run these tests that would determine if he had a stroke or a tumor or whatever else might be wrong with him. They basically charged my ex for not finding anything. Does anyone know what could have caused this? This is what happened: He was walking and collapsed against the couch. He was awake and everything. He was struggling to get up but couldn't move his lower body, just his front legs. Then he vomitted while laying on his side. My ex freaked and had to call someone to come help pick him up cuz he was limp. When they brought him home from the vet, he would just lay on his side and not move at all, and he'd be awake looking around. He wouldn't even move his head. His body was really cold too so my ex covered him with a blanket. Now, two days later, he can get up and walk (very slowly) and he wags his tail occasionally. But he refuses to eat anything. This is a dog who would eat ANYTHING. And now he won't eat. He has to pee a lot too. He has such a sad look in his eyes. I don't know if it's cuz he's in pain or what. We are hoping to god that he will slowly recover, but if he is going to be in pain, the best thing is to put him to sleep. Anybody know anything about this or had this happen to their pets? Please let me know. He is an American Bulldog

you did all you could do (the tests), and if they couldn't figure it out, we surely can't.

If it were me, I'd put him to sleep if he's not himself. I know you love your pets, but it's usually the best thing to do. Keeping them around is more for ourselves than the animals.

It's better 2 weeks too early than a day too late, you know? A high quality of life it a lot more important than the longest life possible.

Yeah, i keep trying to tell myself the same thing about it being selfish to keep him alive. My ex is just too worried that he may recover and putting him to sleep too soon will have been a big mistake. I don't know what to tell him. This really sucks.

just tell him what I said before "two weeks too soon is better than 1 day too late"

I once second guessed myself and I kept ferret alive and she died two days later with blood running out of her ass (and it was all crusted on her, so I had to burry her like that because I didn't want to bathe her.) I hated myself for that because she died a horrible death when I could have made it peaceful.

It sounds horrible what your dog has. I know what it's like to see that glimmer of hope, but if they aren't themselves, they aren't better. They are just tough creatures and giving it the last push, but we all die. It's the circle of life. You can do the right thing by helping her and maybe getting another dog from a shelter that will die and doesn't have to.

This is what my friend said (who lost her dog to seizures)- it is possible the dog had a grand mal seizure with residual effects/damage. Or the dog could have an infection- there is a fungal infection that dogs contract from dirt (not parvo but something else, my friend is not sure what it's called but it was on a show called "Mystery Diagnosis"- the infection was not identified until the dog's owner contracted the same disease.)

How is old is the dog? Has he been healthy/uninjured up to this point? Has the dog been around any landscaping renovation or construction? Is it possible that he was poisoned, or in contact with a toxic substance? Some dogs are fatally allergic to chocolate.

Emily- you are so right. I keep worrying my ex will wake to find that he died in pain. I keep calling to check on the dog, and my ex. It's not really my call to decide whether to put him down or not cuz he's not mine, but i will have a serious talk with the ex about it.
As far as how old he is, we're really not too sure cuz when he got him, he was already an adult. The previous owners said he was about two, and my ex has had him for around 7 years, so he may be 9 years old now. I don't think he has been around anything different, but i wil ask.

I'm not sure if this could be the cause ( I am NOT a vet) but my dog had a similar incident, but not nearly as bad. If happened because he licked a poisonous frog in the back yard. (It's called a Boffo or something, and they usually come out when it rains a lot) Anyway, he wasn't himself for a few weeks, until the toxins worked their way out of his system, but he is perfectly fine now. Just something to look into. Whatever happens, I wish you the best of luck!

My Maltese has intervertebral disk disease that flares up. When it happens she sits there and won't move and sometimes her legs spaz out. But she never throws up so it's probably not that.

    Could it be tick paralysis?
