    Default Tanning Makes Cellulite Worse?

I've heard this around several places on the web and I'm not sure if it's true or not. Basicly they say by tanning you stretch and weaken your skin, making your cellulite even worse. I can't tell if this is just stuff from anti tan people or the truth.

Sounds reasonable...I don't think it makes your actual cellulite worse, but certainly after time, if the collagen is weakened in that area, then the skin will cling differently and make it appear worse.

    I don't know...I'm just guessing.

My guess would be that the damage would show after time (2,3,4,10 years). But of course the damage is taking place every time you tan.

    It is true!

My plastic surgeon told me so a long timeago .. he said " women who tan lose elasticity in their skin faster due to sun damage." he said its not so much Cellulite as it is wrinkles .

I believe anything that man says

Do you have any idea how long it takes for the damage to occur? Like does it show up in your late/early 20's like fine wrinkles or later? Haha now I'm all paranoid. I'm 18 and have been tanning since July 1-2 times a week and I really don't want to get cellulite or make any I can't see worse.

I have no idea. I saw changes ( which is why i went to him and why he said this to me ) by 22. I think it depends on how much elasticity that you have... to start with. and then factor in the amount of tanning

i think if you were to tan standing up and use some sorta lotion that was firming etc you'd be in good shape

I don't think this is the only reason fo rmy cellulite, but I'm 22 and I tanned for like 3 months when I was 14 and again for like 5 months when I was 18 just turning 19. That is all of my tanning experience, and I do infact have cellulite, and even though I have very little that shows, the parts that do sho ware severe depressions... looks like hail damage, but only on one but cheek, and the back of the other thigh.... I was noticing this morning it appears I'm getting a few depressions where my hip meets my thigh on my left leg.

I have been monitering the progression of my cellulite for the last 2 years- I noticed only one depression when I was 20..... it has only gotten worse- I doub't all of it is from tanning, and I'm starting to feel like I'm watching my body fall apart. I've gotten saddlebags in the last 3 years too, an dI'm very skinny and work out twice a week with weights, and eat right. Damnit, now I'm sad.

he said there is NOTHING you can do other then quit tanning and get a leg lift

A leg lift consists of them basically making an incision along your lower back above the ass ..then pulling the skin up like youd pull up pantyhose

he wasn't trying to sell me on it , he was trying to point out that creams..lotions ... dont work and never have. the best bet is just to avoid the issue all together.

he did tell me that cutting out caffiene..and excersising and staying along with maintaing a certain weight is the best way to stay "firm"

Basically none of the shit I wanted to hear lol I wanted tohear..oh hey just come on in here for 3 grand we'll fix you right up

I don't know if this helps, but I have been reading a LOT on workouts as I was redesignin mine and now can't seem to kick the habbit of reading. A lot of sources mention jumping rope as a way to break up cellulite.

I had NO cellulite until like 2 years ago. None. And I was 24/25, not THAT young.

2 years ago is when I quit smoking and reintroduced sugar into my diet.

So, right now, I'm cutting out sugar again. We'll see, I'll report back in a year . If not i'll have to take up smoking again (j/k!)

I have to say one thing about rope skipping. I've been doing pretty religiously, anywhere from 1 to 5 times per week for ten years. I'm 36. I have no noticeable cellitite at all.

I actually audtioned for a celluite cream infomercial a couple weeks ago. They said the couldn't use me because there was not enough "before" celluite to make the "after" photos that believeable.

However, I also rarely tan, (use a self tanner) and I have never been over 124 lbs, and my weight hasn't gone through too many extreme ups and downs within my life time.

    I think that might help.

I have skipped rope for as long as an hour and as little as 12 mins. Lately I've been jumping 15 to 20 mins. before eating anything around twice a week.

I think mixing up your workout is the best way to surprise your body and get results.

When I worked with a trainer, I lost 20lbs....SLOWLY but jumping almost every day for 20 mins on an empty stomach. (This was with a combination of a casual variation of the Atkins diet).

There are a lot of UCLA athletes that go to my gym. I observe them and get ideas for improving my workouts.

    I hope this helps.

Cellulite's usually tied to body fat percentage (see the other body fat percentage thread). The higher your bf% is, the more likely it is that you'll have cellulite.

Tanning weakens collagen and causes cumulative damage, but not in such a way that you won't have cellulite one year and will have it the next year. You'd have to tan like Magda for that to happen. Or have *been* tanning for many years and have it finally caught up to you.

Cellulite looks the way it does because we lucky women have parallel striations in our supportive tissues, like this: ||||||

So when we gain fat in those areas, it squeezes between those striations and looks dimply and ugly. Whee. Men, on the other hand, have crosshatch striations, like this: ####

So they don't get cellulite because it's a much more supportive network of connective tissue. Lucky bastards!

If you notice you're getting cellulite, have your body fat percentage calculated. A fitness professional can do this for you, or a Tanita scale, but keep in mind that the fitness person could be inexperienced and measure you wrong, and the Tanita scales are most accurate in the morning after going to the bathroom, before eating, and dry (i.e. not damp from the shower). Anyway, people can have cellulite even when very lean, but typically you start to see it around 18-19%. You'll see most of it go away around 15-17%. Obviously your mileage may vary and some women never get cellulite regardless of their bf%, and some always have it, but that's a reasonable benchmark.

One more thing about tanning: the human skin continues to develop until about age 24. If you are younger than 24 and tanning, you're actually doing MORE damage to your skin than if you were over the age of 24. Imagine taking a nice piece of cloth and leaving it in the sun--it'd fade and get worn, right? Now imagine taking the cotton thread, leaving *that* in the sun, and trying to make a nice cloth out of it. You'd have weak spots and damage present even in the new cloth. That's what sun does to your skin--it creates weaknesses and doesn't allow your skin to develop to its potential. So, be careful!

Ugh, my poor skin, I feel so bad now. I'm going to try and cut down to once a week and get a good high quality firming tanning lotion.

You could try switching to high-pressure beds. The UVA rays are much stronger and provide a longer-lasting tan, and cost more, but you wouldn't have to go as frequently. It'd probably be a wash.

Ever read the melanotan forums at http://www.melanotan.org? That's the company that's making the drug that, when administered, hyperstimulates your melanocytes to provide color. It doesn't work without the sun, but in essence, you take this stuff and go tanning a couple times, and develop as dark and strong a tan as if you'd gone for far longer. The point is to allow people in very sunny climates (like Australia, where this is being developed) to have more protection with less UV exposure.

It hasn't been released yet, but you CAN buy it. Anyway, they talk about it on the forums there if anyone is interested in learning more.

I can see there being a connection. Tanning does weaken skin's natural structure.

The high pressure beds ARE great....I wind up going to the bed about once a week, if that...and I use a lotion in between, the one by Dove that has a tanner in it...It's fool proof, you can't screw up the application and it brings out a really natural color. I swear by it.

In Az, where it is so friggin hot that covering up your skin seems like torture, skin cancer is a HUGE nightmare, along with the aging of skin. So I stay out of the sun as much as I can, use sunscreen, etc...and even so, by combining the "Big Bed" with the Dove tanning lotion I always have a nice tan and good glow. I never feel washed out.
