Default Anyone know anything about Rabbits?

And no not the sex toy

Seriously though.. my bunny has been one big medical pain after another and I just cant afford to keep taking the bugger to the vet!!

Well its shedding season and on our daily struggle to groom him(he scratches and bites everytime you try to hold him) I noticed that under his neck and front leg hes red and raw and it looks like sores... I know he needs vet treatment for this but I seriously cant afford it again, plus I will have the vet on my ass to get him nutered(imagine $1000 to cut a rabbits nuts off!). So umm yea anyone have any idea what these are and what I could do for them before biting the bullet and taking him to the vet AGAIN?(already over $1000 spent on respitory problems). I'll post pics tomorrow if it will help any... bleh..

If you call the house rabbit society in your area they can possibly recommend a cheaper vet or look at your bunny if you bring him/her in.

It sounds like your bunny's probably in some pain so maybe they can recommend a cheaper vet that specializes in rabbits(A lot of vets don't know very much about rabbits). They should have a place where they keep the bunnies, usually at someones home from the HRS, they may let you bring your bunny there, tell you what's wrong, and give you a cream or some other ointment. At least they can tell you if it's serious or not.

My bunny had the same sort of thing a few months ago and my mom took him to the lady who runs the house rabbit society in Mo. She knew exactly what it was, and gave my mom some kind of cream that cleared it right up. I think she also used neosporin on him as well. I believe she had to apply it a few times a day but I could be wrong.
I'm not sure, but I will ask my mom exactly what she used. Maybe it's something you can buy at the store. Or maybe she has some left over and I can mail it to you.
I will let you know what the name of the condition my bunny had, and what she used on him tomorrow when I talk to her.

Also, Is your rabbit spayed? A lot of health problems are caused by them not being spayed. They can get cancer and be very aggressive.

I just found this on the website.

    Skin

Scratchy, flaky skin with bald patches is usually a symptom of skin mites or an allergic reaction to fleas. Cat flea powder clears up either condition. A veterinarian should be consulted for other skin irritations.

We had 2 bunnies that were adopted from the SPCA. We always took them there for medical care and check-ups were never more than $100. Fortunately they were both spayed when we adopted them but, I think the SPCA only charges $70 FOR SPAYING.

Yes, great advice ^^^. Good luck. 1k seems way outta line for neutering. My bunny girl was spayed about 5 yrs. ago, it cost around 180.00 (for exam, & she had like a hysterectomy).
Sometimes the rabbit magazines have info, they're only published once or twice a yr.
That rabbit.org site has lots of info.

The vet i've been taking my bunny to said it will be apx $1000 to nuteur him because of the fact he has respitory problems. He has had a couple of lung infections etc.. I bought him from PJs Pets(canadian) and the shavings they had him on almost killed him. I have him on cotton bedding now and a special litter. Im going to call the humane society and see if they can recomend something I guess.. he doesnt seem to even notice it like it doesnt bother him at all unless you try to touch it. Hes never liked being picked up so thats not out of the ordinary.

Try calling them. Explain extremely bluntly that you cannot afford to have his chronic condition treated, but that you can afford to have him neutered. They are quite reasonable. I have a similar thing with my poor dog. Every time I take her in they try to get x-rays, urine tests, whatever those electrical things are that monitor brians and hearts, ultra sounds etc. Bottom line - they won't do anything unless you agree to pay. They won't give you a quote over the phone. I think it is half that they want the initial consulting fee before they give you info, but that is common to vets too.

I thought that the neutering cost was inflated because of a chronic respiratory condition that they wanted to treat? Did I misunderstand? It definitely shouldn't be $1000 to neuter a rabbit.

He has a chronic respitory problem that hes had since I got him.. i've had him treated countless times and hes racked up well over $1000 in vet bills from it so because of the problems it will cost more to neuture him because they have to use special ventilators n shit The problem he has now is a skin condition and I cant figure out what it is.. im gonna take pics now to show you guys.. I feel bad for the lil guy though he doesnt seem in pain but it looks painful.

Ok I have no idea what is wrong with your bunny but i hope he turns out ok..I found out from a lady at www.bunnyrescue.net that carpet remlets is the best flooring for your bunny and buy a cat litter pan and place in his encloser with timothy hay in it and it will help litter train him and make cleaning his cage oh so much easier...a bail of hay cost $7 and last 3-4 months...the best food to buy is perina rabbit chow and she can let you know what co-op supply will have it and it cost about $8 and last about 3-4 weeks and a round cage is so much better than the little rabitt cage pet stores sell ya your bunny will be happier and love you for it as far as the skin problem heres what i found and the website.................................Skin Disorders in Rabbits

The quality time you spend cuddling with your rabbit provides a good opportunity to check his skin. A variety of skin diseases are common in pet rabbits. Signs of skin disease include fur loss, redness, itching, scales, and odor.

The rabbit fur mite, Cheyletiella parasitivorax, is a common cause of skin disease. Typically, you will sees fur loss with scales on the top of the neck and rump. The mite causes variable amounts of itching. Veterinarians will usually diagnose this mite by taking a skin scraping and examining it under the microscope. If present, the mite is treated with an injectable medication, Ivermectin, every two weeks for two to three treatments.

Ear mites, Psoroptes cuniculi, cause significant irritation to the rabbit. Rabbits frequently scratch at their ears and shake their heads. These mites can be seen by your veterinarian with an otoscope or under the microscope. The treatment is either a topical medication or injectable Ivermectin given every two weeks for three treatments.

Rabbits can become infested with fleas if they are housed with infested dogs or cats. There are a number of products that have been safe and effective for eliminating fleas in rabbits. Ask your veterinarian first before using any flea product on your rabbit! There have been anecdotal reports of fatalities using certain products.

Ringworm is occasionally seen in pet rabbits. In large rabbit colonies, there may be stressors that predispose rabbits to infection. Ringworm is actually a fungal skin disease that has the potential to be zoonotic . A zoonotic disease is one that is transmissible from animals to people. Therefore proper hygiene after handling your rabbit is important Ringworm frequently causes dry, scaly skin with thinning hair that falls out easily. It may or may not be itchy. A fungal culture is often used for diagnosis. Treatment varies depending upon the severity of the infection, but may include clipping of affected fur, topical sprays/creams, and systemic oral antifungal medication.

"Sore Hocks" or ulcerative pododermatitis is another common problem, especially in large, sedentary, obese rabbits. There may be a genetic predisposition to develop this disease. It starts with small erosions (ulcers) in the skin on the bottom of the hocks. If left untreated, these ulcers become severe enough to affect underlying bone. This is not an easy disease to treat. Foot bandages and systemic antibiotics are often necessary. If allowed to become severe the lesions may never heal. The best treatment is prevention. Allow frequent exercise for weight control. Be sure cages are kept clean and dry. If housed on wire, make sure adequate padding is available.

Urine scald occurs from constant skin exposure to urine. This may occur with obesity, urinary tract infections, and kidney disease. A thorough medical work up may be necessary to determine the cause. Blood work, urinalysis, and radiographs may be required. Treatment depends upon severity, and correcting any underlying disease is necessary. Gently clipping the affected skin and applying topical astringents is helpful. In chronic cases, surgery has proven helpful in alleviating the scald.

Constant drooling or "slobbers" from dental disease may cause a moist dermatitis around the chin. It is best controlled by treating the underlying dental disease.

These are just a few of the common skin diseases found in pet rabbits. Regular grooming, including nail trimming, is an important part of rabbit care. Most signs of skin disease are fairly easy to spot. As with most diseases, dermatological problems are easiest to treat when caught early. With care, you will have a long, happy relationship with your rabbit and not a "hare" raising experience.

Cally, those look like self inflicted wounds. How often do you let him out of his cage ? Also how big is it ? Our first rabbit was a girl, Jasmine was very calm and gentle. Our last one was a boy named Rusty, we got a huge cage about 4 feet by 2 feet. He needed a lot of excercise so, we would let him out for 2 hours everyday to run around in the grass. Plus he got his petting time and treats. Even though he was neutered he was very aggressive when we first got him but, with special treatment he turned into a little angel..Damn I miss him.

He gets out for about 6 - 8 hours a day. sometimes 12 or more, he goes out on the balcony of my apt which is clean and safe for him.. his cage is 6x4 feet... its huge. He is litter trained and is on cotton bedding as recomended by the vet. Im thinking they might be self inflicted as well the more I look at them.. nothing seems to keep him happy. He has more toys then I did as a kid and yet whenever he is in his cage he chews. I really think he just needs to be neutered.. bleh...

Do you want me to do research for a good bunny vet and neutering? It's vital that you do neuter him for his health... and seriously, even WITH health problems, 1000 is way too much. My dog needs to go in special ventilators for heart issues when she needs surgery, but the use of the ventilator cost me an extra hundred or so- not 800. Seriously, you need to find a new vet ASAP, PERIOD. This guy is ripping you off, and vets that rip clients off are NOT good vets, period. They'll force extra treatment on you, they don't care about your bun. I'd say find a new vet ASAP, and if you need hlp, pm me.

The vet is ripping you off, absolutely no doubts about it. He's charging you so much because he doesn't have a clue about rabbits.

I hope it's not pastuerella as someone suggested earlier, I had a bunny die of that about 5 years ago. Also a netherland dwarf, however he was a sweety.

Then we got a Holland lop (also a small bunny) but was a BITCH. We also have some random bunny my brother won at a carnival and brought home, none of the three rabbits have been neutered/spayed and the boys were just so sweet. I know when my mom was looking into having the girl bunny spayed it cost about 100$...

I agree find a new vet, one that specializees in rabbits, that one is totally ripping you off, and maybe check into the humane society, I think that they may have a payment plan. Even if he does have a chronic condition it should NOT be that much.

I know that with my first rabbit, Marshmallow, my parents put so much $ into keeping him alive in the end, and really I'm not sure it was worth it. He got really sick and died about a week and a half later about 4 or 5 vet visits. He died two hours after his last vet appointment.

BTW how old is the rabbit?

The vet I take Mischief to now specialises in Bunnies actually lol... this IS Toronto.. everything seems to have to be more expencive Anyway im going to look more into finding another vet or the SPCA, sadly im away all next week so it has to be the week after(go ahead call me a baby mommy, im leaving him in Alexs care). He will go to a vet though. I've actually been considering giving him to the humane society because I cant afford to keep shelling out all this money for his health and im not around enough to give him the TLC he deserves.

    Btw.. hes 9 months old.
