    Default Wanna travel? Airline hiring...

Just thought I'd throw out a tip for anyone who'd like to get in with an airline (read: near-free travel, yeYAH! ).

American is hiring res agents in CT, NC, OH, TX, and AZ. And some other positions in other places, but res is what I do, recommend, and can dish on. If interested go to aacareers.com and click the 'Reservation Representative' link, avail positions will come up under 'current job openings'. FYI the reduced workweek position means you only have a 4-day, 32-hour schedule (that's me), and a home-based position requires living within an hour's drive and a seperate work area w/ hi-speed internet as you work from home, natch. With either position they have a lot of options to work more/less.

I'm really glad I got in with em in Feb- the pay is decent (10/hr), but the gold is the travel perks; AWESOME and immediate! Plus, it'll cover for me stripping (have to do it on the sly) b/c DFW has a 24-hour call center so no prob explaining late nights out. In the neg column though to be fair, they are REALLY anal about puctuality/absences in the first 6 months- 3 strikes and you're gone. And, training is a bit demanding too-tests every week for 6 weeks, fail a couple times and you're gone. But... did I mention the TRAVEL!? lol

If ya got ?'s ask away

^^^ But how are you going to be able to travel if you're working so much?? Is it moreso a travel perk for friends/family??

I heard that AA was hiring and I applied...I haven't heard back from them

I knew a woman who did this. She was able to travel to see friends in Scotland for like $11.

Yes, anyone that is interested should definitely do it! I'm so jealous of a co-worker that also works there p.t. She often decides at the last minute that she wants to go to CA or pretty much anywhere, and as long as there's a seat, she can just get onto any flight for CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!! She loves her job and it makes me jealous when she talks about it.

I am flight attendant and it definately has it's perks but it is VERY hard work. While you can only legally work 30 flight hours the company usually ends up working you an average of 60 duty hours weekly. "Flight hours" are hours that you are actually in the air, that's when you get paid an average of 18 bucks hourly. "Duty hours" are layovers between flights or time spent on the ground and cleaning, restocking the plane, etc and hours spent flying. You get paid appx 1.50 hourly for these hours. So, go ahead and add 1.50 for the hours you spent in the air to the 18 bucks but then when you are on the ground between flights you get paid 1.50 hourly and that's it. So, let's say you work 12 hours and fly 6. You'll get paid the 19.50 for the 6 hours you flew, then for the other six hours you did not fly you'll get 1.50 hourly. So, that's 117 bucks daily for the flight hours plus 9 dollars for the hours you did not. So, total that's 126 bucks daily before taxes. Legally, or at least with our contract we must have 8 days off monthly. So, you work 5 days a week, once taxes get a hold of you it's about 400 or 500 bucks a week. You are on your feet all of those hours just about. You do get some nice overnights and the company of course pays for this hotel, however, most overnights are under 12 hours. You really have to make sure you get enough rest during that time, allow time for grooming because yes, you still have to do your nails and make-up is required and allow commute time to the airport because you aren't always right next it. Now, my experience is speaking from working for a regional carrier. If you have experience, can speak multi-languages (this does not include spanish and english because every other person in the airline industry knows spanish) and depending upon who you know you can get hired to work internationally. I hear good and bad things about this as well. While, I have never been on the plane with a passenger for longer than 3 hours these flights obviously last 7-8 hours minimum and usually staff 2-3 crews because you time out after 8 hours. So, you get to keep the same passengers which is good and bad because if they are easy-going, it's great but if they are uptight and stressed like at least half of passengers than you get to deal with them for 8 hours plus fix them dinner, lunch, what have you. Now, they do have limitations, passengers can not interfere with your ability to do your job per FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations) but they still can aggravate the shit out of you.

I love flying. I am looking into possibly getting my private pilot's license. I am a very nurturing individual and love "taking care" of people. Plus, I have worked extremely hard in my life doing nursing so I don't mind hard work. I am very flexible in my life because I don't have anything tying me down, plus I like living by the seat of my ass so to speak. I don't mind sleeping in hotels, or apartments that are like dormatories with multiple strangers that also work in the airline industry. So, if these things don't bother you and want to really "experience" life than go for it.

If you have any other questions you can throw me a pm anytime.

I work travelling in pretty easy since I only have a 4-day work week to begin with- I've visited Austin (monthly), SoCal, NYC (twice), Miami, Orlando, and England for long weekends since I started (nothing international costs $11 anymore, but domestic trips are not far off per way). Mostly I just give my shifts to coworkers when I want off, but if I can't find anyone that wants the hours there are other options to get off for days or weeks at a time.

As for friends/fam getting in on it, in a nutshell... when you're hired with AA you get immediate unlimited flight benefits for yourself and your spouse/dependants. Parents get limited flights, like a dozen roundtrips per year, and if you're single like me you get to designate a travelling companion instead of a spouse, dozen RT's per year to share between them and parents. When you pass 2 years with the company you can let friends fly too, but still the same dozen RT pass cap per year to go around for everyone (except you, always unlimited).

Sorry you haven't heard back from em Cinna, but don't be discouraged- I had to call them back a couple times to keep the ball rolling, maybe it's a persistance test lol

And I feel ya green- I applied for FA at American Eagle at the same time I put in for my current job, and I couldn't believe the amount they were offering for that kind of work and schedule (and uniform, pfft). I prefer making the 10/hr to yak on a phone and know where I'll be sleepin that night ;p

    Oh my god

So, how does stripping and the background check workout. This is my big thing. Fear they can see your past in the background check.

How did you guys get sround it or did it not come up.

I still want to fly, but its so rigorous, I took a vacation from thinking about it for a while.

    Thanks for any info.

Why would stripping go on my background check? I didn't break the law.

I think the term "background check" is pretty vague. It depends on what they are looking for. A background check might include any criminal history but that's not all that a background check entails. It could be verifying past employment, addresses, etc. Therefore if you have a dancer's license, that could very well come up on a "background check." Also, if you've ever applied for credit using the club's name as your employer that can also appear on your credit report (which might be part of a background check as well.)

Well, I haven't started stripping yet, nor am I a felon, so I didn't have to sweat the bg check. I don't recall em fingerprinting me, just a lot of paperwork with educational and work/address history plus references, but I doubt they checked that very well b/c my employer at the time didn't mention them calling, nor did the people I put as refs. Gotta understand, when they're hiring they get a lot of apps en masse, hence you start out with just a phone-interview- if you pass that you come in for a group interview at which time you submit all that info. If you pass that then you're put in training and on payroll, but statistically only 1/4 to 1/3 of trainees make it past 6 months. So, these people handling hiring end up with a lot more histories to check than they know are gonna make it anyway, b/c of that I'm guessing they don't dig too deep. FYI though they did do a drug screening on everyone starting, and it's something they reserve the right to do at any time, although I've never heard of em playing that card on anyone later.

If you're interested just apply. Leave anything shady out, I doubt they'll dig up anything you don't tell em, and anyway worst they can say is no.

I am a flight attendant also, and I remember being very worried about the stripping part during the BG check. First of all I have never put it on my resume or any application, and you don't have to tell anyone that if you don't want to. When it came time for my background check, I put that I was unemployed for the 2 years that I really was stripping, plus the fact that during that time I was still in college full-time. It was an issue with the BG company doing my check. They called me every day for about a week needing more proof of my unemployment, what they wanted was a letter from a licensed professional who knew me well enough to write in and say "Yes, she was unemployed." I did not know anyone, and I ended up asking my dentist to write the letter, but he wouldn't because of course he doesn't know anything but my teeth and didn't want to risk losing his license. Turns out the background check company skipped over the part that I was enrolled in a college at the time, and that covers for the unemployment.

I think as long as you have something to cover the gaps you will be OK. Whatever you do don't tell the airline that you worked in the adult industry, but if you really don't have anything for the background check then give them the information. Like the other Flight Attendant posting here said, being a stripper doesn't make you a criminal.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking.

Keep a regular job for the employment check.

Do you guys know of any airline that would be good for the Bay Area/SF? Maybe to be a gate agent?

I'm not ready to fly yet, but I still want to travel....

Ummmm... Northwest maybe? You should check out the airline's websites, if they're like us they'll have a link somewhere to employment info.

P.S. Working at an airport as a gate agent, or anywhere you're in contact with travellers personally, is TOUGH. I thank my lucky stars daily that some of the dumbass/rude ppl I talk to on the phone are miles away and harmless, not right in front in me and not so harmless. Talked to a male gate/counter agent once who said he'd had to give up wearing real ties b/c upset customers always ended up yankin on it, so now he wears clipons only :/ And just recently on my way out to England, I watched another gate agent have to tackle and drag off a nutjob blocking the jetbridge to keep the plane from departing (b/c her dumb friend had gone off and was gonna miss the plane- in the end they both did, idiots). Not to scare ya, just tryin to say, it's a hard job I'm glad I DON'T have.

    Thanks for the advice.

So glad you posted. I'd never thought about anything but FA jobs. And I wonder why I never considered Northwest?

Just one question, I did get my college degree. Do you think this will be an obstacle for a customer service job? It seems to distract them, they're like why are you applying for this job?

Also, do you use your travel benefits much? Where have you been?

Northwest flight attendants are fixing to go on strike. The airline is attempting to cut costs and one of the ways they want to do this is cut the flight attendants pay almost in half. I think I would go to www.afanet.org and look at other airlines hiring.

I think having a college degree would only hurt you in that they may consider it a threat to your employment duration with em- they may think you're just looking for something temp till you get your 'real' career going from your degree, not a long-term gig with them. If you can convince them otherwise though I don't see how it could hurt- they train you on their system and how to sell, exp not required but it helps. And FYI they know why you and everyone else is applying- FOR THE PERKS!- no need to beat around the bush there lol. Just let em know that you're gonna be a killer asset to the company in exchange for that priviledge.

Edit: Oh yeah, from an earlier post, "I've visited Austin (monthly), SoCal, NYC (twice), Miami, Orlando, and England for long weekends since I started (in Feb of this year)." Which reminds me, wherever you go apply be sure and ask how they determine your place on the standby list when you fly- most airlines seem to do it mainly by checkin time, but I've heard that some go by company seniority instead (which sucks apparently).

Yeah, we fly standby, we are a regional carrier so most of time we are standby 1's, which means we get on the plane before international carriers would but if someone else wants on that is senior to you then they get on first.

Question...is it possible to do this job part time? The 60 hours a week someone posted was scary!!! I'd never have time to do anything else! And how are they usually about taking a leave of abscence(if theres a big money event going on to go strip at? Sick days? Vacation? If I could do say 20 hrs a week at this, then strip pr model part time it may be the answer I'm looking for. I see on that website that Miami International is hiring..I assume you haev to get hired in or near your homebase...
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.

No, because while the FAA will only allow you to fly 8 hours a day you can be on duty per the majority of contracts up to 16 hours a day. So, the average day is 10-12 hours. And most companies will have you on reserve in the beginning which means you only get 8 days off monthly. It consumes your life which is what I currently need.

cameron: yes, I'm a PT employee, 4 consecutive days scheduled a week. If you want to work more/less you just take/give shifts to other people, or sometimes the company will directly offer overtime when they're real busy or days/weeks off when they're not. It's easy to give/take for the most part, the exception being high season and when you first start with the company (at which time they require you get your hours in for the week so you don't forget your training). But again, I take reservations over the phone, I have no idea what the deal is for FA's or airport agents.

OK here goes, I'm not a ragin druggie, but I do like my occasional joint.

THC lasts for weeks in a drug test, they drug test for all airline positions.

Do they test airport workers randomly or often??

I'll quit if I have to, but I don't like alcohol - that shit is poison.

Should I reconsider applying? or do you think I could still imbibe a little?

Sorry, I dunno about airport workers, but I don't see why they would do that to them more than us (which is never after the initial one to get hired, unless you're acting like a total loony), with the possible exception of pilots. I like an occassional joint as well, months in between for me so it was no prob when my test came up and I haven't had a prob since nor heard of anyone else getting testing randomly. As for alcohol, I'd say just don't show up drunk and you'll be fine.

Oh yeah, forgot to come back sbout leaves of absence- they'll work with you on that if it's a serious thing and your job perf is such that they wanna keep you. A pal of mine's dad went into the hospital recently and they worked something out with him, don't think they hold it against you unless it's a chronic issue, although you may lose out on earning some vacation days if you're on LOA a significant amount of time.
