    Default Stripper Workouts Demeaning?

CNN has a video piece about women and “stripper workouts,” and whether or not it is “empowering or demeaning” to women.

Pay particular attention to the good Dr. Tina Deshotels, who’s “been studying strippers for ten years.” She expresses concern that many strippers lose their sense of sexuality and is “afraid that many of these women (the workout customers) will as well,” and therefore implies that these workouts may be demeaning in some way.

    Video

I think any time a woman can do something that allows her to feel sexy or sensual for herself, it is empowering by default. Unless they’re doing this to keep a man/partner, I don’t see how it could remotely be considered “demeaning.”

    Thoughts?

That crazy becuse the only way we as dancers might have trouble with sexuality (not saying we do) is from dealing custy's not from the dancing so i see no connection between the workouts and losing sexualitly.

Saw a local network pickup of this feed a night ago. The local female anchor was smirking as the segment ended, clearly disapproving. Her male counterpart made a lame comment, which didn't help matters.

Watching these suburban women working the poll and chairs (lapdance moves), I had to smile. Good for them and their SOs, I thought.

These workouts are novelty/fantasy things and won't take business away from that tiny subset of women who can strip professionally. But it just may spice up a marriage here and there.

Oh geez! I find it so pathetic how this country puts sooo much emphasis on sex in the media and the sex industy but yet violence is perfectly acceptable.

It is 2006 for pete's sake! They day's of walking around bare footed and pregnant are over.

    Feeling sexy is liberating!

Why does anything that's remotely sexual have to be either empowering or demeaning to women? When are women gonna be able to just have fun?!

A woman's body is bad and nasty. Therefore, anything that emphasizes it is demeaning. And stripper workouts have a vague sexual element, and we all know that sex is demeaning to women. Sheesh, we can't even exercise now without objectifying ourselves for the pleasure of men.

Did I get that right? Heh heh.

Unfortunately, I think the puritanical Christian right will be even more influencial in the future, as the world enters a very scary no-secular period fueled by Muslum fundamentalism. Basically, bad days ahead for open-minded, sexual playful folks and their pleasures (SCs, sexy scenes in movies, revealing clothes, etc.)

On the other hand, there were some terrific parties in the midst of Prohibition--so maybe it's not all bad.

Would anyone like to go in with me as a financial backer?? I'll do the rest of the work!

Haha "But unlike 'so called' exotic dancers, they keep their clothes on". What the hell is that supposed to mean? Is it inappropriate to just say "exotic dancer"? What a dumb story, they must really be running out of ideas. Where did they find that stripper expert lady anyways, she was totally pulling that shit out of her ass.

"Sex" is overrated when it comes to public media/attention. I can't believe we are not desensitized by this yet.

If I lived anywhere near you, I would *so* do that. They have them here, though (including an S-Factor studio that, if it isn't open already, will be soon). I'd love to open one myself, to.

And aren't the European media outlets supposed to be super chill when it comes to the human body...

Why is American media still stuck in the 19th century??

You are totally right! I think that woman probably did have some contact with girls who seemed jaded about sex, which is why she said that it makes them lose their sense of sexuality, but most of the girls that I work with are incredibly sexual and have great love lives. I dont think that stripping is demeaning at all, let alone working out in a way thats fun and sexy. I'm working on my website for this very reason, I want to put an end to ignorance about sex and sexuality. Please visit it at erotipedia.editme.com and leave any posts you want. I would appreciate it forever!

Home stripping is awesome. I don't have the looks or the lifestyle to become a "real" stripper, but I'm a closet home stripper and it is so much fun and feels GREAT. I've only ever done it once or twice for my husband, but after getting into it myself I would not have any issue if he were to go visit a SC. Before I would have been jealous. I don't think I'm any competition for a professional, I just don't see it that way anymore....it's not about competition. I have a lot of respect for what the women do, and just do what I do at home, for me, because it feels good and is another aspect to my fitness routine.

I did sort of worry, when these stripper workouts started to become mainstream, that perhaps some of the stigma would be removed from real strippers and actual stripping, thus making the industry less lucrative. It's nice to know that my concerns were needless.

What I want to know is how a woman loses her sexuality. It's right there, just pick it up and use it! They make it sound like it fell under the couch.

"many strippers lose their sense of sexuality"

i think that has nothing to do with the dancing/work outs and much to do with the interactions between dancers and customers. it's the "bullshit" of the job that can cause women to "lose their sexuality". you just have to know how to prevent it from happening. it's like anything else, you can't other people define who you are.

I think it's far more demeaning for a housewife to get all fat & ugly because she negects herself to serve her family hand & foot.

I saw a Stripper Workout class in action & it was cute. They were having fun. No harm in that.

I do want to strip but I haven't yet. I do have a Carmen Electra Lapdance dvd & I think it's fun. It's really ridiculous how men can walk around talking about their dicks all the time but women are just supposed to sit back & be meek.
