I hope to go to this next week. Anybody else go?

Love those silly things! Have been to the Bristol, Wis. faire once a year for the past 19 years (probably missed a few, proving I have this habit under control).
The texas ren fest is on right now. A couple weeks ago in the campgrounds there was a wet t-shirt contest so that was something to see. I didn't make it to the last one because I saw rain in the forcast - but me and my trusty sword will be going next weekend!
I love those things.
I've been wanting to go the last few years. I finally went last month & it was really fun.
A wet corset/period costume contest would have been hot. They hold one every year in nearby Upstate NY for me. The mead still hits the spot, but the food has gotten progressively worst.

We hit up the one in Maryland every year. It's about a 2 hour drive, but we enjoy it much more than the PA one. We always have a good time, and the kids love it. We also try to make one trip sans kidlets so we can indulge in the wine and debauchery on Pirate Weekend. They make this drink that's half Mead and half Raspberry Wine that is brilliant. And Redz, the food isn't bad at all at this one. Excellent spinach pie!
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.
I am speaking of an actual show your titties web t-shirt contest.Originally Posted by RedZ28

The campgrounds are split into "family camping" and "main camping." Main camping is composed of about 1000 bohemians drunk off their asses blowing horns and banging drums and setting up "camp this" and "camp that."
The festival it's self is pretty main stream. After dark in the campgrounds though... whole new level of debauchery.
(There are cops there who put the clamp down on anyone who starts getting mouth and violent. Some people just can't hold their beer.)

They show their titties now at the Renaissance fests?????!!!!???? WTF???!!!??
Don't children attend these things?

Ah mead...that blasted potion. Goes down waaaaay too easily methinks. Food is not that bad, but not great. I'm a big fan of the Steak On A Stake.Originally Posted by RedZ28

Good times...Huzzah and have fun Green!
The Ren festival here in Atlanta is great!
The big framed-family crest thingy I got there 2 years ago is one the best purchases I've made in the past several years I love that thing (it's my mother's maiden name, paying homage to her for raising us when dad pulled the Houdini act...)

I've actually worked at them from time to time when they are in Vegas teaching archery. Loads of fun for a weekend.

I used to go when I was up in NY. I have yet to try the FL ones. My dad works a lot of them on the west coast. He has so much fun!

Aren't those great? I got the papers and had them framed myself, but I also got crested mugs for me and my brothers. Our dad passed away so it was really emotional when I gave the mugs to them. There's only a few of us left with the family name and only one of us had a boy so the name and heritage is really important to us.Originally Posted by X Evan X
I think it's great that you got that in your mom's honor. What a fitting tribute.
Already making my costume (and the fiance's) for next year. Can't wait to go again!!!
I love the costumes and the goofy sales techniques they use to sell it and the smiling faces and cool not-made-in-china shit they have to buy there.

I'm a perennial visitor to the Stirling NY Ren Faire as well ... in fact a friend runs one of the Tarot reading booths there. I had to start making my own period costumes though, for two obvious reasons LOL.Originally Posted by DylanAngel
In fact, I've been mulling over a possibility which I'd like y'all to comment on. Since I'm now 'retired', and do have some time on my hands, and I actually live fairly close to the Sterling Ren Faire, and I am pretty good at one particular 'hobby' ... making natural soaps and perfumes and essential oils from the flowers and herbs I grow in my garden ... what do you think of the idea of approaching the Ren Faire about setting up an 'Alchemist's Shoppe' next year (with working essential oil distillation, working glycerin soap making etc.)?

I think it's a great idea Melonie. The thing about selling items like that though is not just the quality and uniqueness of the product but also how it's packaged. Come up with some nice way of packaging them and you'll have a huge hit on your hands at a place like that. FYI though, Alchemists work with metal.![]()

I think that's a great idea! I usually go to the natural soap shop in Sugar Loaf, about 15 minutes from the Faire (I'm hooked on Peppermint and Sage). You should take a look and see how they do it in there.Originally Posted by Melonie
Natural paper to wrap the soap in...raffia to tie the pkg. And definitely not cheap! I think I paid three something for each bar of soap.
Good luck with it and hopefully I'll see you at the Faire next year!

^^^ while true in terms of some 'famous' renaissance Alchemists in Europe, this is only one aspect. The 'art' of distillation, and the distillation of plant extracts for medicinal purposes, was an equal part. Look up the origin of the French word for 'double-boiler' i.e. bain-marie !!!FYI though Alchemists work with metal
I agree that 'authenticity' in the sample product's creation and also in unique packaging is a very important aspect of marketing products in 'special markets' such as a Ren Faire, whereas pricing is a very secondary consideration.I think that's a great idea! I usually go to the natural soap shop in Sugar Loaf, about 15 minutes from the Faire (I'm hooked on Peppermint and Sage). You should take a look and see how they do it in there.
But with an off-site shop, price does become a significant factor ... thus the typical business model of purchasing bulk glycerin for soap base, of purchasing bulk distillates for blending ...
in other words, where most 'natural' soap and scent products are concerned you really don't want to know how they are actually made today - but should give you some idea ! I researched the possibility of attempting to do this as a home business, but without the 'special market' pricing available i.e. Ren Faires, craft fairs etc. it's impossible to economically compete using actual homemade products versus the products being 'blended' by the natural soap and scent stores which they are buying as pre-processed bulk goods from corporate sources (and usually produced at very low cost in foreign countries).
Also, the legal liability ramifications in New York State eliminate the possibility of my producing and selling anything for 'internal' use ... which eliminates at least 1/2 of my 'best' products !
---- actually this thread comes at a very timely moment, as upstate NY had it's first freeze last week and I was actually running batches of extract from my garden plants when I found it (there's a fresh batch of garden lavender in my double-boiler still at this moment) !

All you can do is give it a try. I do think ya outta check out the price of renting a building there or a cart of somekind. I would think a nice tent roof would do OK too.
(Often there are building codes requiring a rennie look to the tent or building ya know.)
I certainly have thought about it myself... run away and be a rennie hippie.![]()
