In the past week, a pair of couples I know (one married, one not) have busted up. There was, as far as I can tell, no infidelity involved, just a winding down of love, passion and connection until the breakups.
It's sad, even watching from a distance, how love (even affection) dies. This old soldier is trying not to be cynical about romance, but it's getting difficult to be an advocate in the face of so much empirical evidence and heartbreak.
Maybe it's better to say this: Embrace romance as it comes, ride it hard and enjoy the heady feelings while they last. The odds are against us, gang. But maybe that's the lesson in the end: We continue to believe, to jump feet first into love, despite the sad statistics and our own experiences.
Join me in sending happy thoughts to four friends who are hurting tonight.
