    Default Australian Banks

    Searched and nothing, anyway.

What's a good bank to go with in Aus.? I'm with Commonwealth but finding one of their branches is IMPOSSIBLE. I was with Westpac but they charged $5 a month - but their security (both online and off) was effing fantastic. I've heard good things about Suncorp and they seem to be everywhere.

I need a bank with low/no fees, that's everywhere and, preferably, doesn't charge customers a fee for currency exchange. ANZ, I believe, promises the last bit.

Or should I just get three banks and seperate my money in each one and pull it out when I need it at a new place?

'cause when I have xxx in the bank and NEED money, it's fucking annoying to be charges $2 just to CHECK MY BALANCE because I can't find my ATM.

And lets not even get started on depositing my cash each night when I'm working away.

I would highly reccoment ANZ back. They do have low fees, however if you have of 5k in your account, then they waiver the fees.

Suncorp is good bank, however they are impossible to find interstate! They do exsist, but always in the most hardest to reach placces.

I prefer ANZ due to the fact they are everywhere!

BTW... You account keeping fees are tax deductable!

I quite like St George. Im not paying any fees on my account unless I make over a certain amount of transactions - I forget the amount as I really couldnt care less as Id be lucky to get up early enough to go to a bank most days of the week. You can also get a Visa debit card with St George if you wanted one for whatever reason. I think ANZ do then too. I find them handy as I am not a fan of credit cards. I always find St George staff to be really helpful. I used to be with Commonwealth but I got sick of their fees.

I am with CBA at the moment but about to change to Anz as I despise all the people who work in the CBA branch near me.

I found ANZ the best - but my brother loves St George...

Whilst NAB is the devil I generally only keep that account open as there is usually a NAB branch in every state and city (usually) so then I can deposit the money into that account... find internet access.. transfer the money into my main/everyday/primary account. It really depends on if you will be finding yourself travelling to alot of remote areas and/or small towns or not.

If you will be travelling to small towns then you should consider a bank that does have branches in most of Australia like NAB and CBA.

Suncorp doesn't charge if you have 2K balance consistently in a month. If you go under even by a cent, you will be charged the $4.50 account keeping fee... otherwise it is fee-free. I also use Suncorp not just because of the low monthly balance requirement (makes sure I always have 2K "on hand" in an emergency) ... as I am generally having a pleasant experience using them. They have other fees and charges however they are all reasonable ... and to be expected as there is hardly a bank that is fee-free (as such).

I have a Visa Debit Card with them and was able to easily acquire one with them as I had held my account with them for 6 months or longer (plus showed a good balance etc).

In the end, I went with Suncorp as they don't charge me to use the internet banking since I maintain the min. balance... whereas NAB can charge you for using internet banking (grr). Once again, I am only with NAB as I use it as a my "food allowance" account for when I do any travel away from home. Otherwise, I use Suncorp as my everyday and primary bank.

As a side note: my flatmate has been with CBA for decades and loves them (and he's on the dole ... soon to be disability) hence he isn't getting eaten in charges etc. Plus you can usually find a CBA branch in most towns even the small ones.
