    Default Acne advice/tips?

Whats up guys, can you suggest a way to prevent/treat acne such as pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads? I have "combination skin" as it seems, like some pimples/red marks here and there on my face/blackheads on my nose/whiteheads on my chest. I also seem to produce a lot of oil through out the day. Any advice you guys can provide is greatly appreciated. Just in case (if it matters)

Good exfoliation and maintaining a good PH balance of my skin is key for me.

Acne develops when dead skin cells mix with bacteria. So if your skin doesn't shed properly, bingo you get acne. Some people's skin just doesn't shed as fast as it should which is why acne is consider a skin disease.

Also if you are getting alot of oil make sure you aren't stripping your skin of it's natural oils. Doing so will make your oil glands work harder. Over using things like toners, acne drying creams, etc., can do it for sure. But at age 19 your hormones are still really high so that will also do it.

If it is really bothering you consider going to see a dermatologist and get a check up and advice from a Dr.

I have fought acne for way too many years and have finally been able to find a good maintenance program for my skin so if I can help you any further just let me know.

    General:
Exfoliate 2x a week and wash with Cetaphil. Biore Pore Perfect is good for blackheads. Also use a face lotion I like Aveeno, Clinique, and cetaphil. I heard toners were not necessary though you may want to use a cottonball and try a mild one like neutrogena or clinique for your T-zone only. Also try Bare Minerals make-up and wash face 2x daily. Tanning helps, but it bad for your skin, a bronzer makes zits less noticeable short term. Try this for 2 weeks. Also clean your make-up brushes and bags at least a few times a week. Wash pillowcases weekly and wear hair up when exercising. DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE EITHER, WASH HANDS and always use a new sponge or clean brush for make-up.

    Tricks:
    Toothpaste, it works!
Get green concealor to minimize red
There are some expensive zap-zit kits I've heard of if you can afford them, supposedly they work, but dent the bank a bit.
Take vitamins with antinflammatory properties like C and E.
There are some neutrogena spot treatment patches you can wear to bed for quicker clearing on big zits.
    Ibuprofuen reduces inflammation as well.
Reduce stress and drink LOTS of water. I find if I don't stress about something it usually dissipates.
Exercise also cleans pores, be sure to shower afterward to wipe off excess bacteria.
Eat foods that are more alkaline then acidic, substituting sea salt for regular is a good start.

As for your chest, same thing use a Cetaphil wash and exfoliating gloves (most drugstores). Always moisturize, I use Eucerin, Neutrogena is a good lotion too.

Not true. It is an excess of sebum, which mixes with keratinocytes, hair, bacteria, etc. Skin not shedding fast enough is a very different disease known as Ichthyosis, much more serious.

^I like mild soaps and a benzoyl peroxide cream, like the site suggests. Though I don't do his program, it works for many.

Toothpaste gave me friend big ugly scars when she used it on her zits. They were like big brown blotches, so be careful with that. I was surprised toothpaste could do that. I don't think it's worth the risk. I'd go with a real acne cream.

As far as diet, the only thing that helped was elminating grains and sugars. Esp white flour/sugar, but that's not for everyone I know.

When I don't sleep enough or drink lots of water, it's worse as well. Vitamins (multi) can help if you're already deficient in them.

Also, if you do a search for acne you will find lots of info. This has been covered many times before.

Poor phrasing on my part I guess or maybe I misunderstood the whole mixes with dead skin cells thing when I read it years ago. Anyway my point was the need to exfoliate to help eliminate dead skin cells.

Great question blacksheep although very few of us have found our holy grail yet. I myself am going to my doctor at the end of the month to see about getting my hormone levels checked. I'm sick of treating, it's time for prevention.

Anyhow, if your face is shiny midday, you could try blotting papers to soak up the oil.

Actually poor exfoliation is one of the causes of acne. The causes are: Hormones > Increased sebum levels > poor exfoliation (leads to clogged pores) > and bacteria. It is the combination of this coctail that makes some people to get acne.

I've tried many different combinations of products, but I've been using this regimen for almost a month, and haven't broken out for the last 2 weeks (usually I would have at least one or two breakouts at a time).

    Mornings:
    Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser
    Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner
Neutrogena Pore Refining Lotion (just use a little or your face will feel greasy)

    Nights:
    Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser
    Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner
Neutrogena On The Spot Acne Treatment (all over my face, not just on pimples)
    Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer

2-3 times a week I also use the St. Ives Apricot scrub with Salacylic Acid. And on days I have to work, instead of the Pore Refining Lotion in the morning routine, I use the On The Spot treatment followed by the Ultra-Calming Moisturizer under my makeup.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

I use the neutrogena advanced solutions for acne. It somes in a big kit at Walmart. I only use the face wash though. The only product I've used so far that gives me continous results. That and soaking my face in hot water for 60-100 secs twice a day. the hot water soak dries up pimples faster and helps keep oily skin at bay. The neutrogena advanced solutions is a salycilic acid based cleanser.

along with what everyone else said, drink lots and lots of water! It really makes a difference in your skin. I've had acne prone skin my whole life but keep it under control by washing it 2 times a day (morning & night before bed), trying not to stress out, drinking lots of water, exfoliating & taking vitamins.

L'oreal has a really good acne kit called Intensive Adult Acne Peel, an intensive skin clearing treatment similar to acne peels used by professionals. Use it 2-3 times a week, non-consecutive days and it really works wonders.
