Default Cholesterol and Red Blood Cells

I had a blood test at the doctor a few weeks ago for a routine std check (all clean!) and she had them check other things since I was getting a needle stuck in my arm already. They found that I had slightly high cholesterol and a high red blood cell count. She's going to check it again in January. I didn't understand what the lady was trying to tell me (the call woke me up). What does it mean when you have a lot of red blood cells? It seems like that would be a good thing?? Also, WTF I have high cholesterol?! I don't ever eat fast food! EVER!

Some people are prone to high cholesterol. To get cholesterol down diet and exercise can help alot. Also, after reading a few sites a high RBC can mean many things. I would be tested again just in case there or somewhere else. Here are some links that might help.

Which cholesterol levels are elevated, HDL or LDL? If it's the former there's no need to worry about it as that's the "good" cholesterol. Some people are genetically predisposed to have higher than normal HDL levels.

Depends how high the RBC count is. Slightly high means nothing. Do you smoke? Smokers have higher RBC counts. As far as cholesterol, some people have bodies that produce more cholesterol than others. Your total cholesterol should be under 200, your LDL should be less than 100, the HDL should be higher than 40.

Bella, 206 is high, but not ridiculously high. If you already eat healthy and exercise, ask your family if anyone else has elevated cholesterol. It can be genetic. Mine is, but mine runs more towards 270. You can take 1000 mg of slow release niacin a day. (regular niacin will make you flush and give you hot flashes). You can also take 3-5 grams of fish oil a day. Ask your doctor if it would be worth it to try these things or if she wants you to wait until a repeat level is checked to see if this one is falsely positive. Labs do make errors, you know.

Just off the top of my head elevated RBC levels has to do with oxygen transport...or lack of there..especially since you are reporting shortness of breath. Have you recently moved to a higher elevation? did they test your iron levels? RBC carry oxygen because O2 binds to it's iron molecule...
