So, I'm in Pheonix and my brakes are completely fucked up. They're going to cost $2k to fix, which just doesn't seem worth it since the bus cost less than that to begin with... except that we did spend some money and a shitload of time putting in solar power and turning it into our cozy little home. I was going to buy a van and park the bus someplace kind of permanently in the next couple months... but not a truck stop in Phx. It wouldn't really be a big deal to fix the brakes, except that I'm not making very good money here and can't seem to find a place to work for more than a night or two. I wish I could buy a van and just throw all our stuff in it and get the hell outta here, but... too much stuff. Plus the bus is home and I don't want to leave it.

2k for breaks? Did they quote you in Australia, or are they a specialty job for busses.

^ A bus. Thomas body, Ford 6.6L inline engine, the one that was made in brazil. It's still a rip off, but it was the only person we could find in the are who would work on it.

But then some truck drivers started hitting on me, and of course they all wanted to help and they tracked down a guy who works at some place and can get us a discount on labor and it seems like we might be able to get it fixed for around five hundred now. We're gonna get it towed there in the morning.

The funny part is that when the (good) mechanic was here looking at it, my girlfriend was in the bus putting the brakes on, and off, and on, and off, and he was showing me where the air brakes are stuck in the back, and all of a sudden we hear this gushing noise and turn around and a hydraulic brake line broke in the front. So now half our brakes are stuck on and the other half don't work at all. LOL

Ok the air brakes are not getting pressure. Air brakes are held open by the air pressure so if you lose pressure the brakes close and stop the vehicle. Look for a dry rotted line, it will look all cracked and broken. Sounds like all the rubber components need replaced. Since you live in a dry climate I would look at all hoses and belts.

Icky, bad news. But if you can get it done for $500, that's not so bad. Still cheaper than a hotel!!

Actually we don't live in a dry climate, we're just passing through one. LOL And we knew we didn't have an air leak because we checked and because both sides would be stuck on. Now that it's apart it looks like the air part wasn't even an issue - the air brakes are the parking brake and they're just piggy backed on the regular hydraulic brakes, but what was stuck was the little cylindrical parts inside the brake, because they were rusty. So they're saying that we need all new parts, but I'm pretty sure that you could just wipe the rust out and put it back together and it would work fine. It looks to me as if those parts themselves aren't rusting at all (they're stainless steel), but rather the rust is coming from the brake lines and accumulating there. So I'm like, just flush the brake lines and wipe that out good, and they're like, no you need a new one. But now they're closed so nothing will be decided until Monday anyways.

But it's pretty nice here, we're in the shade and have an electric hook-up.
