    Default adding protien powder

I found a protien powder that has 110 calories from walmart. Now I know extra protien will make a person gassy but I take gas-x anyway. I am adding this to the fresh juice I make everyday.

Now I am wondering what is the sensible way to do this. Protien/juice in the morning after workout, same in the afternoon, and a healthy dinner? I am not tryin gto lose wieght at all. I'm 118 now but I want to build more muscle which is a little difficult for me no matter what I do. I just cant build muscle for some reason. A guy that bartends where I work used to be a body builder (he is still fuckin hot!) and told me since I had 22% body fat (BMI?) that I was skinny fat. I told him I wanted to build more muscle by adding protien to my diet. He said it might work but too much would just um make me poop too much.

Am I going about this right or should I start with one protien drink?

Everything is great gradually. Of course I think its safe to assume you are packing a sweaty wieght training session in as well. I think that might be too much protein for a beginner. Start with one after your workout. Do other protein choices instead later in the day. That way you are balanced better. I would think youd get more nutrients from real protein in food rather than a shake. Not saying the shake is bad just limit yourself at first to see how youre body reacts to it.

Besides, if thats all youre eating in the day add other things in as well. Eating 3 times a day and each meal so little wont be enough calories to support muscle growth. Add 2-3 more meals to your day of mostly protein and healthy carbs is you can and youll find better balance.

I think Emily has a juicer...hope she sees this thread.

You definitely need to build it up gradually. Try 1 serve per day for a few days then increase it. I find that protein + water is less gas inducing than protein + milk but if you're having lots of it you will *still* get gas...

My favourite way to have it after a workout is to mix it with my breakfast bowl: vanilla protein, vanilla low-fat/sugar yoghurt, granola and chopped-up fresh fruit. Mmmm.

If you want to build muscle, you will need a protein intake every 3-4 hours. I do take 6 meals a day with proteins in each, 3 with carbs (morning, midday and post training), 1 with fat (pre training) and 2 shakes of whey protein only. It works pretty good, I gained a little weight but lost a lot of fat. It also depends of your type of training (cardio or weight lifting), and don't worry, you'll NEVER get bulky - you just don't have the right hormones (you won't even get the Monica Brant body type, she's on roids ).
The daily amount of protein should be between 2g and 2,5g per kilogram of your bodyweight.

Oh, I forgot, you shouldn't take that protein powder from Walmart, maybe you can find a store specialized in sports/nutrition that will help you to choose the right ones. And the cheaper they are, the worse they taste. I personally prefer the Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein with a strawberry flavour. They taste amazing and also have 110 calories per serving.

That why I am adding the powder to juice, in case it tastes bad. I've had some pretty awful meds growing up, so I can choke down a nasty protien shake if needs be.

I'm not sure of what a healthy carb is. I dont really eat a lot of bread although I do like toast, but it has to be whole grain. Oatmeal is ok but I add butter and brown sugar to it and I know thats not exactly healthy. Its the old fashoined oatmeal, the kind you have to boil.

Can some one tell me what a healthy carb is?

Oh as for exersize, I do Tae Bo boot camp everyday. I'm still on the beginner one and I have 3 DVDs to go through. I am adding 5 pound wieghts to it. I'm not ready for heavy lefting yet, I had a shoulder injury last year and I am still babying it. I walk 2 miles a day and not by choice either. We have a cairn terrier (toto) that needs her exersize since she is going to have pups just after thanksgiving.

So first off to build muscle you must overload your muscles which basically causes damage. This damage is then repaired by the body which builds muscle. Unless you are working these muscles by some form of weight lifting...the extra protein intake will just be lost through urine which in fact is harder on the kidneys....but you are doing the Tae Bo which I assume involves weight bearing exercises like squats and stuff so a protein shake wouldn't hurt. How much protein are you getting a day right now?? I reccommend getting protein through food options but if you do want to have protein shakes then take a whey protein shake after your workout...this will help prevent the break down of muscle post workout.

Typically, gas from protein powder is the result of low quality protein. Thats why protein bars are especially "gassy". In your case, I recommend adding a scoop with your juice drink. A total of 1-2 scoops a day would probably be plenty, assuming you're also eating whole foods containing protein. I would opt for a decent whey protein isolate and you dont have to settle for vanilla or chcolate anymore. You can get mango, lemonade, apple, cherry, watermelon, blueberry, etc.

I take this stuff called Spirutein Whey. It's got 14g of protein in each serving. It comes in different flavors but I like to use the vanilla kind and make shakes. I put a scoop of the powder in, eight or so oz. of soy milk, and then I throw in whatever fruit I have on hand. It results in the yummiest smoothy ever.
