Haven't they always flown to Love Field? I seem to remember flying Southwest into Love back when I lived in Houston in the early 90s.

Yeah, but it was some crazy thing, like they couldn't fly to other states, only within Texas, and maybe NM. There's an article about it on their website. Here's a piece:
Freedom Arrives at Dallas Love Field
Congratulations! After 27 long years, the Wright Amendment fight is finally over! Beginning October 19, 2006, Southwest will begin selling one-stop (same plane) and connecting service outside of the Wright Amendment restrictions. And in eight years the Wright Amendment will be completely eliminated. This is a momentous day in Southwest Airlines’ history--a day which never would have arrived had it not been for the heroic and steadfast efforts of all our wonderful Employees and Customers.

Oh hell yeah! I have been waiting for this ban to be over. I travel to Dallas from Phoenix often.

The Wright Amendment was one of the stupidest laws ever made. It was only enacted so Dallas and Fort Worth could force passengers use their "new" airport, and the traditional airlines that flew out of there. It had no business being on the books in the first place.

Yeah, that whole law was alot of bullshit. It was ONLY made so Southwest couldn't compete with other major airlines who were no longer flying into Love Field. They got around it by setting up their Love Field flights so that they all stopped in Texas or a neighboring state, but they could never have any long-distance direct flights into or out of Love Field.
This doesn't really affect me anymore, but I am glad to see that crap law is finally going away. It was only the result of competing businesses whining that Southwest was going to ruin them anyway - exactly the kind of thing that laws should NOT be made for![]()
Not to throw flames but I strongly disagree. Without the Wright Amendment, Dallas Fort Worth would have never grown to its size. The FAA not Dallas or Fort Worth, stop funding for their two city airports and told them to find a way to build a bigger airport.
The two cities agreed the only way it would work is to strict airline travel from their own city airports. Do you actually think three airports would have helped the area? You need the volume to support a large International Airport. All airlines were given a chance to move and Southwest refused. Southwest has always played the role of poor me. They have a made a great business out of Love Field. However, I do agree the Wright Amendment is dated DFW Airport is big enough now for competition. Don't knock the Wright Amendment. It has made Dallas one of the major hubs in the US.
