Default Remains still being found at ground zero

NEW YORK (AP) -- Human remains that appear to be from World Trade Center victims were found by utility workers in a manhole at the northern edge of the site, a Port Authority official said Thursday.

A Consolidated Edison crew doing excavation of the manhole at street level found the remains, some as big as arm or leg bones, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site.

Con Ed said it entered the site Wednesday to remove material from two manholes that had been damaged and abandoned after the 2001 collapse of the twin towers.

Crews hauled the excavated materials Wednesday to a work center more than a mile away, as is customary, Con Edison said. On Thursday morning, a contractor working for the Port Authority realized the materials contained remains, Con Edison spokesman Chris Olert said, and the medical examiner's office was contacted.

Five years after 2,749 people died in the September 11 World Trade Center attacks, families of about 1,150 victims still do not know whether their loved ones' remains were recovered.

can i just say its fucking rude to call finding remains to loved ones lost... gross.

I mean sorry if the visual of a god damn bone is too much for ones stomach, but as a person that lost her best friend... its at least something someone out there can now bury in a proper burial that so many haven't had a chance to do.

Someone out there, that they just found a leg or an arm to... has a family that now can put their child to rest.

I have to agree with Tart.

I remember a story just after 9/11. This woman wanted her Husband's wedding band. He'd died in one of the towers that day. Well, they didn't find his wedding band.. Know what they found and brought her? His heart. She said that meant more to her than a gold band anyday, because she finally had something to bury.

    ^ Whoa.

Yeah, one of the 9/11 widows did get her husband's ring back (they found his arm & hand), she wears it all the time. (She was on "Larry King Live.")

I was upset when I saw this story.....when I walked by Ground Zero in 2004, I thought it looked immpeccably clean. Kinda morbid to think it's a tourist spot with remains still in the area. Uch....
