Default ? for those who took psych or women's studies

here's my deal. would like to start teaching myself some psychology and start women's studies. the issues: i have a bad learning disability so i learn at a slow pace (better off i study at my own pace). hell i have a hard time writing by hand. money is just not there right now for school and neither is the time. things are just too up in the air. so, i'm going to ask the brilliant ladies here for a favor. any books you could recommend from your old curiculum to get me started on these subjects? thanks!

It may be in your best interest to go to half.com you could more than likely get an outdated edition of a text for pennies! Also, even if you do have a learning disability, you are aware that most colleges offer services to students with learning disabilities.

I 2nd half.com. Ive ordered from there with good results. The order was fast. I got a $164 text book for $45 shipped to my door and new condition.

I would suggest asking the teacher for old edtions he/she can suggest. We all know its the same material in a newer fancier binding with different colored pages. That way you can learn from a book that best fits your classes curriculum. Colleges are different all over.

Psychology and Womens Studies are big fields. What do you want to learn? For what purpose? Is there a particular type of writing style that's easier for you to learn from?

I liked Developmental Psychology. You can check out the titles tagged for intro to Psych and Intro to Women's Studies at the campus bookstore of your choice. My Women's Studies class had 3-4 books. We'd digest one every two weeks.
Have a great time!!! Psychology is a wide open field with endlessly fascinating areas. I liked Industrial/Organizational the best. It makes you aware of dysfunction in business and other organizations and how to alleviate it. You learn how to make them more efficient or more ethical.... Every job is a new challenge. Same thing for clinical psych, research, etc. I even did a behavioral study on cats' health and socialization skills. Fun and interesting stuff!!!

You can get an old Intro Psych text from your local Goodwill store, for cheap. Psych is psych.

Women's studies is harder...each prof and each course will have a different focus. Look up the curriculum of the courses you plan on taking once you have the money, and get those books. Anything else may well be a waste.

That said, you can't go wrong with Simone de Beauvoir, Gloria Steinem and Betty Frieden. They're pretty much staples.

also, if there's a big college nearby, consider finding a large lecture class where the professor just lectures to a large group, and then start crashing the classes (avoiding test days of course.) I crashed a film class like this one time. Even took the final! (wonder what my grade was...)

Check out the schedule of classes at your local school and head to the bookstore to see which texts they use. Some might have booklists online (mine doesn't).

Just a note for later on: If you do decide to go to school, contact the Disability Resource Center upon admission. They will help you with whatever problems you might find. I used to work in the testing department where people would dictate to me.

reading seems to be the simplest way to learn about things. go the library, find a textbook or book that interests you. try a half-priced type used bookstore to find an old edition textbook or book.
wow, 10 years later I still remember quite a few things from reading my first year textbook. although i have forgotten the crazy clients stories the teacher told us about.

this was an interesting search. (i may have done it incorrectly)

    wikibook textbook:
    http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Introduction_to_Psychology

    mit opencourseware:
list of women studies classes the college offers, and a few texts from reading lists are included.
    http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Women-s-Studies/index.htm

handbook of psychology in pdf format. introduction to psychology textbook. 5 MB
big book, not sure how readable it is though.

collection of free books and texts
may require a login. easy to get.

a college library probably has copies of textbooks the current and old classes have used.
