    Default Eye Stye

I constantly get styes in my eye. I get them once a month, and have to take 2-3 days off work while my eye is swollen shut and oozing. Its also rather painful in addition to being very inconvient.

Why I wonder, do I get these soo often? I wear contacts, take them out at the first sign of the stye, of course, i have to wear them when Im at work. I remove my eye makeup everynight, but I use waterproof makeup remover, I wonder if thats the cause? Im thinking the oil in the remover blocks the glands, causing the stye?

Does anyone else get these, and how can I prevent from getting them soo much? Or when I get them ways to make them go away faster and take the swelling down so I can work while I have it.

I apply warm compresses, take antiinflamatory, it doesn't seem to help.

I used to get them alot.
    A few things I learned:
*dont touch anything then touch your eye w/o washing your hands first.
*throw away your mascara after getting a stye.
*wipe the top of eyeshadows with alcohol to clean them (i never threw them away that stuff is exspensive!)
*wipe your eye liners with alcohol and burn the tips.
*Ive never had contacts but you might want to change to a new pair, new solution, and clean the contact container.

I have this stuff that is an anti biotic ointment I put in my eye when I feel a stye coming on. If you have health insurance or a free clinic in your area you can get it too.

You get alot of styes if ur run down, try taking vitamins and eating lots of fruit and veg and see if that helps. When i used to get them i used to wipe my eyes with cooled boiling water with bicarbonate of soda in it, also my gran used to rub her wedding ring on it she said that cos it was blessed by a priest this would help lol!!

Your grandma may have been right about the ring, but because apparently rubbing gold against them helps.

You use warm compresses? I ice mine to take down the swelling...
I used to get a lot of them when I was younger, but I'd never get one, it'd be 3 or 4 all in a row. I remember poking at them and rubbing at them a lot until they'd all burst. Not conventional and probably not a good way, and when they'd pop my eye would be full of goo, but they never stayed around for long.

i cured one super quick by ... using hot compresses. as hot as my eye could stand. i held it on for 5 minutes then put on a tiny drop of tea tree oil (on lower eye bag, not in the eye). it stings and makes you go a bit nuts for a few minutes but it's worth it.

i did that every hour all day and it came to head and went away pretty much over night. 2 days max. takes a bit of dedication but it works.

i second the throwing away of any makeup associated with your stye... even the dior show!

Something I find that works for styes are teabag compresses. Take 4 or 5 teabags (chamomile is good for soothing but any kind will work fine) and steep them for a while in boiling water. Then let them cool still in the strong tea.

You can either use them when they are still slightly warm to help draw out the "stye-goo", or put them in the fridge and apply cold to help bring down the swelling. I usually alternate the two.

Just make sure you only use each teabag once and don't 'double dip' it back into the tea with the other ones.

I second keeping everything that goes near your eyes clean and hot-hot-hot compresses. I use a folded washcloth that I've poured boiling water over and let cool until I can just barely stand it. Once it starts getting cool, I open the last fold and fold it the other way so that the very center is now the very outside, then put it on my eye again until it cools down. I do that as frequently as I can stand to from the first time I feel the prickly little pain of a baby stye.

Are you keeping well hydrated? 'Cause if your pee is anything other than almost-clear, you could be running around dehydrated a lot of the time, which would probably interfere with your tear ducts flushing themselves out properly.

^Most of this is probably just stop-gap stuff until you get to a clinic and figure out why you're getting styes so often. I thought I used to get them all the time, but I only get them maybe once a month and they never make my eye swell closed. There's probably some deeper issue you need to address.

I get them from wearing false lashes every night I work. If I remove one and accidently rip out an eyelash hair, it sometimes causes a stye to develop.

Start using L-Lysine. It's a low-cost supplement that boosts immune system function & helps your body extract as much energy out of your food as possible. Drink more water & eat carotene rich foods like carrots,

Are you removing your eye makeup fully every night? & Buy new makeup. There is the remote possibilty that an eyelash follicle broke off & is not growing out properly (like an ingrown hair in a bad place.) Humans have oil-secreting glands around every follicle. (This info came from a medical dictionary, I'm not trying to freak you out.) But it's probably just a reoccuring problem.

Stye's typically self resolve within a week. You can speed things along with hot compresses.

It's the same thing as a pimple. If you need to figure out what it is that's blocking the sebaceous glands; make-up, eyelash glue, etc. i'm sure you can knock down the number of times you get them.

Just take comfort in the fact that although they hurt they're pretty harmless.

I agree with what others have said, but also think you should consult a Doctor. I've only had one, as far as I can remember...back in 2nd grade...right when we were having our school pictures taken...not pretty. I remember doing the hot compress.. and along with the pain, the embarrassment. I can't imagine dealing with one a month! Take care.

Hmm..I will try the L- lysine.
I do nto use false eyelashes. I do use waterproof makeup remover that is oil based, so that may be what is blocking things up. I usually remove my makeup every night. I cannot afford to throw everything out, but I did wipe all my makeup down with 91% rubbing alcohol today. Im not to good at drinkign enough water, btu I will have to make an attempt to drink more.

Its strange. Growing up, I got frequent pink eye infections. I haven't had one in years, now its always styes. Mabye I just dont use good enough hygine with my contacts. I do admit that I never take them out. I will sleep in my contacts for 6 months straight, then change them out for a new pair. Bad, I know. The eye doc always bitches. I havent worn my contacts now in a few days, since I got the stye, and I will put in a fresh pair when the stye goes away.
