My blood tests say that I have anemia. I feel fatigued, dizzy, and can sleep for days. I don't feel like eating. I bruise easily.
The doctor said to take more iron. I'm vegetarian. What supplements are the best? When will I feel better?

Prenatal Vits are really good you can still take them even If you are not pregnant they contain folic acid too. My mother is anemic and Iron doesnt do shit for her, so after extensive tests they found tthat she isn't deficient in iron but in folic acid.
when I was pregnant I had anaemia and was given 2 FULL blood transfusion’s they told me that iron would not be enough for my condition but they were chatting shit when I look back now.. Just wanted my insurance money. I was still slightly anaemic even after the blood I was given and then I lost my baby and bled soooo much and so my blood cell's were low again. Anyway I continued to take my prenatal vits and on Monday just gone had a blood test now my blood count is PERFECT! And I don’t even take the vits anymore.
My cousin was severely anaemic from eating chalk for years (weirdo lol) she has iron administered through I.V and she is a lot better.
Also one other thing don't forget your vit C which helps the body absorb iron.

You can try cooking with a cast iron skillet, if you don't want to take supplements.

Ferrous sulfate pills (FeSO4) 325 milligrams three times a day. Folic acid 1 mg daily. It'll cause constipation like no other, but it'll help the anemia.

I thought a dr. had to prescribe you prenatal vitamins, but you can actually get them at the Vitamin store. I saw them there.

Palafer has really worked for me- one pill every two or three days, at night, with vitamin C. It can constipate you though.
But do something. I've known people who needed transfusions and iron shots when they got way too low (ok, one had leukemia, but the other was healthy but vegetarian). Iron shots are agony!
In addition to anything with an iron supplement in it vitamin wise you should also increase iron rich foods in your diet (duh sorry if i'm being obnoxiously obvious). Bodies tend to absorb vitamins added to foods (Vitamin D in milk for example) and in vitamin supplements differently than they do from dietary sources.
In addition, crank up your Vitamin C intake as it helps with the absobtion of iron.
*Beans and Legumes: kidney beans, lima beans, navy beans, black beans, pinto beans, soy beans, baked beans, chick peas and lentils for example.
*Iron Fortified Whole Grains: cereals, breads, rice, and pasta.
*Dark Leafy Greens: collard greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, dandelion greens and turnip greens.
*Vegetables: broccoli, swiss chard, asparagus, parsley, watercress, brussel sprouts, potatoes with skin.
*Dried Fruits: raisins, prunes, dates and apricots.
*Misc: blackstrap molasses, tofu and nuts.

Chloryphill helps the body to make it's own iron...almost immediately. You can buy it at health food shops, and Wholefoods i'm sure. It comes in both liquid and tablet form.

There's a liquid suppliment I took while pregnant and anemic - it's called Flouridex and was easier for me to take than a vitamin. It didn't taste too bad - they say it tastes good when you are iron deficient and bad when you aren't.
Sirona gave you a pretty good list.
Asian dark greens have a lot of iron too. I believe there's another type of anemia where you're deficient in B 12. If you're vegetarian, I think you'd be lacking in that anyway so a supplement can't hurt.

If you're willing to eat meat in this time of health emergency, calf's liver & leeks is a good meal combo. If not, the above suggestions are excellent.
I saw your post in Dollar Den about the health insurance issue, so take it easy while you recuperate, don't let yourself get sicker....

I avoid the constipation issue by taking ironchel, available at GNC. It's a different form of iron. Easy absorbtion and your GI tract will thank you. Iron comes in two forms: heme and non-heme. Your body takes in heme easier. That's found in meat. If you're not veggie, up the lean meat.Originally Posted by Adrenaline
Also, up your vitamin C intake. It helps your body absorb the iron better (both kinds). Though absorption of iron from plant sources or iron-fortified cereals is normally between 2 and 10 percent, you can double that if you consume a vitamin C-rich food or drink at the same time. Yay, OJ. Coffee and tea can block iron absorbtion.
Oh, and steer clear of the iron-blocking veggies when eating lean meats. Some vegetable sources contain a large amount of iron but also a phytate, which blocks iron's ability to be absorbed. The high-phytate crowd includes butter beans, lentils, beet greens, spinach and other leafy vegetables.
Those are all excellent sources of iron...Originally Posted by rozz
The whole constipation thing can be avoided by getting your iron from food sources rather than supplements (not that i'm being a downer on supplements, i'm not).
I just know i've never been anemic... ever. With my third child I started hemoraging about 20 minutes after delivery. Even then I wasn't. I'm sure some of it is genetics but I like to chalk alot of it up to good diet. My parents were hippies and while we weren't true vegetarians (we ate chicken and fish) we got most of our protein etc from legumes, beans and dark leafy greens.
As someone mentioned a prenatal vitamin would be your best bet, you can pick them up pretty much at any drugstore over the counter.

Eating liver is also a good source. But ek. Just hold your breath.

Chlorophyll IS the green from vegetables. It's what makes them what they are. Here's some more info and Here

If you don't want to take chemical supplements Nettle and Yellow Dock are both great for anemia. You can buy them from www.mountainroseherbals.com or from your local health food store. To make an infusion with either one just pour hot water over the herb in a jar or cup with a lid, and let steep for at least four hours (or just do it before you go to bed and it'll be ready in the morning), strain, and drink. Yellow Dock is really bitter, but you can boil it down and make it into a syrup with honey that some people find more tolerable. Nettles nourish your whole body and especially support your adrenals.
I am animic as well, I have taken prenatal vit, they work very well, but it also can help you get preganet easier. I have tried one a day multi vit, I didn't like it that much, so now I am taking one a day weight smarts, it give me energy I need and seems to work for me, but whatever you decide you need more iron. But sometimes you might need more than just that that is why I take a multi vit and min.
