Default I need a doctor, health insurance et al

    I'm sick.

I have temporary insurance with BCBS. United Insurance will kick in on Nov 1. I want to see a doctor. I can't move. I'm dizzy. A random blood test last week said that I have slight anemia, and I thought, Oh great, will United drop me?

If I go to a doctor before Nov 1, could United drop me? I didn't have or know about anemia until after I submitted my application.

Should I just wait 2 weeks to get a physical and full blood work up?

You could go to a vitamin store for iron pills and advice on treating it without a doctor's care.

You should definitely wait with that physical until you are covered by United. Unless your anemia is renal you should be able to get by on OTC iron pills in the meantime as Optimist suggested.

the nefarious 'pre-existing' condition clause ... there is a chance that if you see a doctor now under your temporary insurance and are diagnosed with condition XXX, once the first of November rolls around your new health insurance carrier may refuse to cover expenses related to that same condition. However, if this is 'only' anemia, I agree with the others that it's worth the risk of self-treatment with over-the-counter iron supplements etc.

Or you go to a separate doctor or clinic. Pay cash, do not sign the release the approves your information can be provided to any insurance companies, and make a mistake on your soc. number if you have to give it...

    You didn't hear it here.

I went to a state-run clinic once and I didn't have to fill anything out AT ALL and everything was anonymous at my request. I simply paid cash upfront. It's not the best situation, but if you feel the need to see a doctor immediately, that might be the way to go. Call ahead of time to a place in your area and see how they handle cash transactions and anonymity.

If you could wait, take the iron pill advice. That should at least help you out until you see your doctor under your new health insurance.

If you just don't feel safe waiting until Nov. then I would have to second what Sitri suggested. Otherwise f you can make it, wait and try some alternaive medical treatments for the condition. Best wishes and I hope you feel better soon!
