    Thumbs down Hypocritical environmentalists

What is it with so-called "environmentalists" being such slobs? I'm not speaking for all of them, just the ones that I've run into. I've noticed that a lot of people who claim that they care about the environment and conservation, might care about the environment but are very messy, disorganized people.

Take for example, my very Democrat temporary roommate Bob. He is all about keeping the sidewalks clean, not littering, alternate energy sources, lecturing McDonalds about their use of styrofoam breakfast containers, etc. OK maybe he doesn't litter or pollute, but he sure litters his room and the apartment! I'm always finding crinkled up plastic bags tucked into corners of the dining room...yuck! Does he REALLY think that the answer to cleaning up our streets and cities, is to designate his room as the Official Landfill Dump of the world? Then there is the conservation of energy thing. In the last couple of weeks, I've come home from work in the middle of the afternoon to find Bob working outta home on his computer. There's nothing wrong with that, however what IS wrong is that he will have the dining room light, hallway light, AND bathroom light on in the middle of a sunny afternoon! He works in the dining room so maybe he needs the extra light(yeah right), but the hallway and the bathroom are on the opposite side of the apartment from the dining room! How annoying. Electricity won't last forever if we use it as liberally as Bob!

A few years ago in college, I had a very pro-environmentalist roommate and she too was kinda messy! She wasn't AS messy as Bob, and for the most part she kept her clutter on her side of the room, but still...I don't understand how people who are all about cleaning up the world, keep their OWN place in such a state of disarray that resembles a city after a Hurricane Katrina + terrorist bombing combo. Don't they realize that to clean up our planet, we need to start small by first being able to conquer cleaning our rooms, before worrying about cleaning every street in Pennsylvania??!

    Environmentalists who are messy.
    Conservatives who don't conserve.
    Moralists that are pervs.
Egalitarians who treat employees like shit.
The financially responsible who live in splendor.
The socially conscious who live in splendor.
Entrepreneuralists/free marketers who live off the state.

    And so on.

There's just no end to it.

Wow. You sound like somebody's mom. Somebody's totally anal mom. I'm not sure I see the connection between environmentally sound practices and personal tidiness. In fact, I know I don't. The two are completely different things. As is cleaning up the streets of Philly. Tidiness and nontoxicness are not equal. Also, your messy apartment is not, in fact, just like the destruction left by either a category 5 hurricane or a terrorist bombing.

Perspective, meet PhillyDancer . . . hey, where are you going?

I recycle. I buy earth-friendly products. I get non-toxic cleaning supplies and care about what anti-freeze I put in my car.

I leave dirty clothes in a pile on the floor. I have a pile of mail on my couch.

Apparently I have my priorities screwed up.

    Bingo.

    That dude isn't an environmentalist.

    He's a malcontent.

Does he volunteer for environmental organizations? Park and road cleanup crews? Write for any environmental publications? Provide money to environmental charities?

I bet we all know the answers.

I know 4 x 4er's who are bigger environmentalists than some stocking cap wearers.

    Wtf?

What's the connection between being messy and being a 'bad' environmentalist?

I'd like to know, since I'm in that group.

Bob might be familiar enough with the issues to know that municipal electricity use (ie having 3 lights on at once) is a very minuscule problem. Or maybe he's just someone who's way more concerned about waste disposal than energy use.

Who says that to care about one issue, you have to understand and rigidly stick to the principles of every single other issue?

^ Yep, what Susan and Scarlett said.

Plus, even if he stopped using electricity, and you stopped using electricity, and hell, all of us stopped using electricity and water, the difference would be miniscule. 90% of water and 80-90% of electricity is used by corporations, not people. It might make us *feel* better to think that we could personally save the world if we and all our friends recycled and conserved, but that is a really immature defense mechanism.

OK maybe I was being a little harsh towards Bob. It's just that I'm getting tired of him being so messy. And yeah, he does do a lot of things for promoting the environment. Although lately, I haven't seen any direct involvement in environmental causes, other than promoting a Democrat candidate's campaign in hopes that the Democrat will get elected and do more to help out the environment(I guess that's an indirect environmental cause? I don't know) The thing about his room looking like a Hurricane Katrina disaster zone was just a joke, a hyperbole. In all seriousness though, he IS extremely messy and if you saw my apartment at times, you'd agree and think that I'm being too nice to him! He talks about how it's bad to litter on the sidewalks, but by him keeping trash around my apartment, he's littering MY turf(it's my apartment; he's not on the lease, just staying temporarily until this whole election campaign thing is over) and I don't like that. Sorry if I offended anyone, the thread was written as a satire more than anything.

^ ok...then just kick him out and get over it.

If you want to piss him off, just make a big sign that says, "Anyone found littering on these premises will be fined $250." Then start writing tickets.

I'm concientious about turning lights off...I recycle anything and everything that can be recycled...I don't burn leaves...I don't use detergents/cleaning products that will harm our environments (I love 7th Generation)...but, dammit...I cannot seem to keep my laundry room empty...or the toys off of the floor...or the juice from staining the carpet.

But, I'm happy with what I do do.

Yeah, I go with Susan W. et al. I don't get the connection. Although, as a brief sideline, anyone who wants to email Charmin and ask them to start using recycled paper in their products would have my gratitude. I really like their product, and just cannot buy it. It's very sad being me.

I get being irritated with a roommate however; and we should all conscientiously turn off lights (because I get what you're saying Lena, but it's hardly a sensible reaction to turn around and NOT conserve because it "makes no difference"). If you do write up VG's sign you should include a memo saying that the fines will be donated to an environmental organization of your choice.

I think that 'caring' about the larger environment distracts them from having to deal with the environment at hand. Thier own. I see alot of this too and it pisses me off.

I happen to be a clean, very organised person who could also be called an environmentalist

Yea... but kids are one thing ... having an adult roommate leaving trash all over the house is another! (Especially when he goes on about the environment and does his best to make the house a pig sty - I know - I had a roommate like that!)
