IMO there is no such thing as true demonic possession. It is severe and tragic mental illness.

Non-Catholic faiths have the same ideas about "purging" people with religion instead of medication- I know of a bipolar girl who was "cleansed" of her "demons" because her parents don't believe in medication. It didn't take. Her life is kinda sad.

Oh my god, I saw a documentary once, where people are doing excorsisms over the phone! I can't believe people buy into that!!

Anyway, I LOVE the movie! I remember my mom telling me that the movie made it to her small town in Mexico when she was a teenager (they never got good movies in her town) and there was a saying around town that NOBODY would be able to sit thru the entire movie because it was THAT scary, people would get up and walk out before it was over. She went with my uncle, who walked out and she watched the whole thing herself. I guess in those days, that is as scary as movies got.

the exorcist was based on a true story, and the house where it supposedly happened is down the street from where my mom grew up. creepyyyy.

The "true story" is supposed to have been a little boy instead of a girl.

This is one of my all-time-favorite movies. The Spider Walk is the best! I'm so glad that they put it back in the movie. Woot!

As for the question.. I really don't know if people can actually get possessed. I've never witnessed it, although I could swear that some of the people I have known were. But, I just think they were more mentally disturbed than anything.

So I tend to think more along the lines of what Maxi said.

I love love love that movie. I don't believe in posession, like someone else said, it's a mental illness.

PS: Strangely enough, when I was a kid I could sit through that movie and sleep just fine at night, but after one round of Pet Cemetary I would crawl into bed with my little brother at night for over three months. I always made sure I was on the side near the wall so if the animals burried in our backyard ever woke up they'd get him first : )

My sister will not, ever, watch the Exorcist. I think she read the book way back when and just got way freaked out.

    Gore/Horror fans unite!!

    Excorcist was off the hook

As for whether that stuff really happens I have no idea. My only experience was the other night after I ate at Krystals for the first time in about 10 years... I was definitely possessed for the next 8 hours

i think some of the symptoms are just not "mental disorders"...some of the symptoms people have when they are possessed are too evil to be made up in the head.

Actually, i know this may sound odd, but those things can happen. I think it not fair to say its impossible.

Beside, just coz person has not experienced sth doesnt mean it doesnt.

And btw just coz sth happens like that doesnt mean you are mentally ill. Maybe its just other ppl who try to catagorize it as that to give it a 'scientific' reason.

Nope, it's not real. Demonic possessions are just improperly diagnosed mental illnesses. The "true" stories we see made into movies are based off of heresay, misunderstanding, ignorance, fear and exaggeration. Especially these stories from the 1800's when people were soooo very ignorant and had absolutley no clue about various mental disorders. They had no way of understanding the cause of seizures, for example, or how to treat them. All they could do was make something up based on the prevailing superstitions, which is exactly what they did.

Exorcist never ever scared me, but it was hilairous how much it creeped out my lil bro!
