Yup it is a fence that :
a) won't work very well anyway because the vast majority of illegal immigrants come here on legal a visa then just don't return to their country when it expires.
b) isn't even close to covering most of our borders
c) is not even funded
It is a pacifier for the Conservative voting base just in time for elections.Sad/funny part is it will fool the same 20-30% of idot voters who still believe Saddam had something to do with 9/11. Those folks believe that the world is flat and pigs fly too though- LOL!

huh, i'm suprised there isn't a fence on the border already.

There is somewhat but its just kind of a cattle fence really not much of a structure .

I love it. There are, apparently two bills in progress for "fencing" on the Canadian US border. One is for a "virtual" fence - a series of guard towers. The other? An ACTUAL fence. Between White Rock and the St. Lawrence River. I love it. I think it is too fantastic. I don't even know how many kilometres that is, but it is a lot of kilometres of fencing.

This never would have happened at all but for it's two weeks before a midterm election and the Republicans are in a heap of trouble in Congress. Political posturing is all it is, you ask me.

Hmm, you're right. I guess I should have said fully funded rather than just funded.Originally Posted by lunchbox
Most proponents and opponents agree that the proposed $1.2 billion allocation is far short of the up to $12 billion it will take to build 700 miles of fencing, and some advocates have questioned both the White House and Congress' commitment to it.
"Where the fence is concerned, to borrow a quote from the movies, 'Show me the money,'?" said Michael W. Cutler, a 31-year Immigration and Naturalization Service veteran who spent most of his career as a criminal investigator and intelligence specialist.
Members of Congress said they will have to revisit the funding every year.
"It's one thing to authorize. It's another thing to actually appropriate the money and do it," Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican and a supporter of fencing, said last week.
wow imagine that, wanting to stop hordes of poor illegal immigrants from flooding our country.
A fence would only cost us a shit-load of money but won't help in the end. Poor people who live in shacks and who are lucky to own a freakin mule will not just throw up their hands and give up because they now have to make it over a fence. This is a matter of survival, of feeding thier families. They have nothing and therefore nothing to lose by trying and trying again. A fence does nothing to address the problem, and will only slow immigration for a matter of months until they figure out it's weakpoints and how get around it.
So we abdicate and throw open the borders?Originally Posted by Zabrina

I am 100% behind the fence. The main reason that most illegal immigration is coming through Arizona now is because of the fence near San Diego. We're not talking about a regular fence here; this is a major structure. And it works and it's cheap, especially when you consider what illegal aliens cost our economy.

Illegal aliens cost less in services than they pay in taxes.
Anyway, I'm sure we donate way more money to the suffering poor in Israel, it's the US's largest amount of foreign aid paid to any country in the world. Oh the suffering.
I was wondering when I heard about the wall......how are they gonna afford that with on-the-books legal labor? A bunch of Mexicans could get it done faster, for less... LOL
Seriously, if any good comes from it, it should be a kick in the butt to the Mexican government. They are a nightmare even to Mexican citizens. I agree the burden of Mexican poor should not fall to Americans, Mexico should do more for its people. BUT again, if America could part so quickly with "illegals" they'd already be back over the border.
I'm saying this good old fashioned racism against immigrants is as American as apple pie. We hated the Chinese who came to america in the 1880s, then we hated the wave of potato famine Irish immigrants. Americans said the same shit then that they say now. But guess what? All those hated immigrants have assimilated and are contributing members of society today. Basically, we need the labor force that immigrants provide. They do the jobs that americans think are beneath them. It's the same story, different century. Everything worked out in the end and will again.Originally Posted by Mr Hyde
Either way, no matter what anyone's opinion on the matter, a fence is not gonna solve anything. It'll be billions more tax dollars down the shitter. The mexicans are not going to give up, they will dig a hole, bribe the guards or catapult thier asses over if they have to. A fence will NOT stop immigration, it's lip service and a waste of tax dollars.

These are both false. This is not the first time either subject is being discussed, don't enter an old argument posting unsupported rhetoric that people on both sides of the discussion already know to be inaccurate.Originally Posted by kittygirl

Ok, you're both right, but a fence is not going to stop it. People can climb fences, and lord knows we aren't going to have enough people to patrol 700 miles of fence. Also, there is far more than 700 miles of border, so it doesn't really solve the problem. The Berlin wall this ain't, that was Marichi's original point. We are not really doing much here except putting up some bullshit barbed wire that will be cut down in two days (after the election, mind you) and the flow of illegal immigrants will pick right back up again.
Note the title of this thread. Mariachi is comparing it, ironically to the great wall of China (which is large), cuz it won't be.
Whatever your stance on illegal immigration, this won't fix much. Just won't. And on Novermber 8, the wall/fence'll become a non-issue and illeagal immigration will become an issue/problem that'll continue to be debated in congress and stripping forums for generations.

Is it just me that sort of thinks that illegal immigration - or at least the undesirable effects - could be better dealt with by improving labour standards for illegal immigrants? To me it seems perfectly rational that the reason illegals have a blind eye turned is because they are filling jobs that a lot of locals don't want to do because of wildly low wages and extremely undesirable working conditions - this ranges from jobs in cabs (in NY apparently cab drivers have such strict regulation on increasing rates that they work practically a thousand hours a week) to slaughter houses (nuff said) to domestics (because really - live in domestic - sexual assault and a 24 work day). American/Canadians/Brits/Swedes, etc., don't want these jobs under these conditions. Rather than changing the conditions, we import. Turning a blind eye to illegal immigration is a way of subsidizing bad labour practices. Fix that, and the incentive to hire illegal labour evaporates.

Here's just one link regarding aid to Israel.
But, hey, yeah, I must be biased. Aren't you the one with the pro-israel BS as your signature. Yeah I'm biased.
Anyway, how can a persecuted people diss on another, makes one wonder...
I live in California, we need Mexican labor.
It's one of the reasons our economy competes with other COUNTRIES economies.
I like Mexicans, and they don't abuse public services, that's domestic born drug users. Fix that shit please.
Hardening of the border - more thank you! Mmmm Mmmm Good!
