Default Need tips on how to get flexable.

When I'm at home I always stand with my legs apart and reach for the floor... I'm always trying to stretch to get my flex to have sexier moves on stage... I also need to get stronger to work the poll.

I love doing floor work too and it just seems like everything would be better if I was more flexable.

So if your flexable how do you keep it up? What moves do you do and how often do you stretch to keep up the flex?

    Thanks

Yes, yes. While I have seen stides in my flexibility since May (when I started taking Bikram yoga), I want more. Flexibile, more than strong, is what I want for my body as it enters the 2nd half of its first century.

Would pilaties help? Do any men take these classes?

Flexibility is a funny thing. It doesn't have to do as much with muscles as it does with ligaments and tendons. If you have "short" ligaments/tendons, then you won't ever be "flexible".

Knowing that you are more flexible now than you were, say, a year ago is good. There are some people who will never be able to touch the floor...but that doesn't mean that they are "not flexible". It just means that they are not as flexible as someone who has longer/looser ligaments/tendons.

If you stand with your legs together and bend down to touch the floor...and you cannot do it...if its muscle tightness, then you should be able to touch the floor within a few weeks or so of doing it daily (small stretches...no big bouncy stretches). If its NOT muscle tightness, then no matter how long you hold your stretches and how many days you do the stretch for...you will never be able to touch the floor. However, that does not mean that if you do not have "long" ligaments/tendons that you should not be as flexible as you can be for YOUR body.

Pilates would not help with flexibility. It is more strength training for long, lean muscles. You may want to add Hatha Yoga few times a week. Hatha Yoga is pure static/relaxation stretching. Bikram, Vinyasa, Anusara, etc are strength yoga. You'll gain flexibility, but you should still be utilizing a yoga that elongates the muscles.

I found that pilates did increase my flexibility as I used that primarily when I first started wanting to increase my flexibility. I did a little yoga before that however mainly pilates especially alot of the stretching exercises (I've stuck with Winsor Pilates all this time).

Try Bikram yoga (that's hot yoga). The heat goes a loooong way for helping muscles increase flexibility. The first week you might be stiff, but after that you get more and more flexible.

I agree with Venus that there are people who aren't naturally flexible. It's not impossible, though. When I first ended up on the dance team I couldn't do any splits at all, but after stretching a ton I ended up with my right and almost my left.

I don't really know specifically what to tell you about stretching because dance stretches are somewhat different than anything else I've ever done. Whatever you start doing, though, do it a bunch. I always made a habit to stretch while I was watching my favorite shows (which could be more than an hour on some nights), and that helped a bunch.

Be sure when stretching (even with yoga)-

1- to warm up a little beforehand (go for a brisk walk or some low impact exercise, just enough to warm you up). I tend to do a slow walk up and down the stairs of the yoga studio for like 5 minutes before class starts.

    2- Ease into it slowly

3- then hold where you feel a stretch but it's not painful. do not forget to continue breathing- often ppl hold their breath while stretching (I know I used to).

4- Do not bounce, and *slowly* release.

5- dress so that you won't get cold. I get cold easily, so when stretching at home, I always dress warmly.

    Hello
My son is only 12 but he has his dad's body very sturdy and thick. When he was little he would try to do the splits when he'd see me do them and there was like a foot between him and the floor. He's been in tae kwan do for a year and a half now and they do split stretches (helps you get that higher kick I think). They dont stretch everyday but they do stretch.. and after just a year and a half of this little bit of stretching he can already go within an inch of the floor now. He is young so maybe that has a great deal to do with it but it is amazing how just with time and consitency (spelling??) he has limbered up so much... You may not get super flexible but I do believe if you really take time every day (circus people devote 3 hours... thats circus people though) you will get "more" flexible dont give up
