Default OCD - What have you done?

I had major OCD when I was younger, and well, off my bleeding rocker.

I was reading a thread on another community and it talked about all the things these people did to get their first doctors appointment.

    Examples:

I did multiples of two, but then that wasn't good enough and it became multiples of four, and... ugh. Eventually I got to powers of two. Although, on the bright side, blinking my eyes 512 times in rapid succession did score me my first psychiatrist appointment.

    -----

I finally got sent to the shrink when I couldn't make it to class on time because there were "right" and "wrong" tiles on the floor. :/

    -----

Ah, I got my first one when I associated what time to call people by what letter their name started with.

    ----

    Anybody with OCD here?

What did YOU do that you find really funny now?

I cant physically handle any repetitive motion. I have to time the crunches when I chew to where there is no repetition, for example...

I cant let a microwave finish.

I always set said microwaves in numbers ending in 6's. :36, :66, 1:26, etc...

I dial numbers then hang up, thinking I dialed them wrong. I do this 4 - 10 times before I let it ring.

I only step on certain colored tiles at malls.

If I hurt something on one side of my body, I hurt it on the other. IE: I stub my big toe on my left foot, I stub it on my right.

I seperate candies by color, then eat them in ROYGBIV order.

I chew food I like on the right side of my mouth, things I dont like on the left.

I eat one type of food at a time, even if its something like mixed veggies.... one type of veggie, then another, etc....

I check windows to make sure no one can see me.

When I stack things, like the movies at Blockbuster, I HAVE to have the correct # of items, or at least each stack has to have the same # of items as the next.

I count and recount my money 2 - 5 times.

I have a schedule mapped out for what shows I like and when they are on. If I miss one, my whole week is ruined.

I used to (when I used to be able to afford to) have specific places I went every week on the same days. IE: Wednesdays I would go to restuarant A for dinner with person X, and Fridays I would go to store B and buy some more Y and Z....

When I was a kid, I had to count to twelve before turning a light on or off.

I cant step on the cracks/lines in tiles/sidewalks/wood floors.

I put on a lot of perfume. I am paranoid of smelling bad. I am the same way with mints.

I put on lotion a lot. I am always feeling as if I didnt put enough on (thankfully I can curb myself at work so I dont slime the pole)

I alphabetize all my movies and books at least once a month. I did that with music back when I owned a lot of CDs. I also alphabetize lists, listed items in profiles such as likes/dislikes/fave movies/etc...

I arrange items like clothes, jewelry, ribbon, hair ties, towels, candles, anything in ROYGBIV order.

I am an OCD packrat too. I save everything.

I refold the t-shirts in my drawer every night and

I don't ever EVER eat the ends of anything. I bite a french fry and put the end in a pile. Same with hamburgers, apples, steaks...everything.

Also..sometimes I feel like my brain has to say the combination of letters "rls" So I'll have to say like"curls" or "snarls" or something out loud.

Everytime I get in my car I feel the backseat in case someones hiding there.

After watching "trolls 2" or osmething when I was young, I stare at the shower water in fear of it turning green and melting me.

wow... haha i thought i was bad!!!

I think I've gotten better as I've gotten older... when I was younger it used to be really bad. I used to have longer hair, and when I was a little girl I was always twirling my hair around my finger (NOT in that cutesy way, more in that "uh, ma'am, your child is the weirdest fidget i've ever seen" type of way) and chewing the ends.... eew.
needless to say, i remember many resulting knots that had to be cut off...

most of it is definitely oral-fixation stuff, though... i either need to be biting my nails, sucking on something, (like a candy, you sickos), smoking, talking, or eating. and unless i want to end up a fat chatty kathy with infected fingers and dead lungs, i've learned to keep my hands occupied since my mouth can't be all the time... it's made me a creative person.

*sigh* this is why i like work- forces me to act like a normal girl. haha

I chew on my real nails... but thankfully not on acrylics... I WILL, however, peel off the polish. I kill pencaps, pencils, straws....

And I'm a worrier. I pick at any blemishes. Constantly...

I have to match my deodorant roll-on amounts evenly, i.e. 10 swipes on left armpit, 10 on right. or 12 and 12.

I count. mostly stairs. and money, in my head, while im making money. continually thru a night. i try to keep track in a chronically unhealthy way, which im thankfulyl aware of.

I double or 4x check my front and back door at night, to make sure they are both locked.

I (like pooka) feel the backseat when i first begin to drive at night.

I hit the elevator button 2 or 4 times when waiting or when i get in, or door close. im stuck on evens.

no longer but i used to....

check the windows to make sure no one could see me, two times.

angled a mirror into the hallway from my bedroom so i could see out there. (more paranoia than ocd) but checked it twice before bed.

counted to four before answering the phone.

    Love it!

I dont have it thankfully, but my favorite OCD story is about Joey Ramone On End of The Centuary about how he could never do interviews because he'd be too busy counting walking up and down stairs and switching the lights on and off. Pretty funny, great movie!!!

I check my front and back door about 4-6 times at night, to make sure they`re locked.

I have to pull on both the drivers and passengers side handles of my car dors to make sure thay are locked, even though my alarm system lets out a beep to let me know its locked.

Whenever humanly possible, things should be symetrical.

I HAVE to listen to the same song on the way to work everynight.

When i was younger i usto count steps, if i took 9 steps on my left foot in a certain room i had to take 9 steps on my right foot. I could not leave the room if it was un even, i would have to stomp my foot to make it even before moving on.

I know there is more but i`m drawing a blank right now..........

OMG, that is me to a "T". My shrink said that was part of my ADHD but I think ADHD and OCD often go hand in hand.

That's so weird. I do all that stuff. People at Blockbuster think I'm a little off. I never thought it was too out there. I also divide license plates by 3; convert the letters to their corresponding place in the alphabet, then add everything together. Same with phone numbers, times, names, etc. I have a fascination with figuring out *exactly* how many calories, etc are in a packaged product. It's not good enough if it says serving size "about 2". I have to know exactly.

I have to Move ATLEAST 2 things in my room every other day. As in my bed, dresser, etc.

When making a peanut butter sandwich, i HAVE to use different knifes to spread it. I can go through 3 of them. lol.

I have to put on my shoes differently everyday, if i put my shoe on my right foot first yesterday, it HAS to be left today. I will seriously sit there for 20 mins. trying to remember which one i started with last time i went out. It drives me crazy!

All liquids have to be on the right side of the fridge. If someone gets a drink and puts it on the left side, i HAVE to take everything out and clean the entire fridge, and put it back right.

I cant sleep with a fan on. Ever since i was little i had a fear that it was gonna fall on me and kill me in my sleep, lol.

If my sister or friend needs to borrow my car for whatever reason, i clean the entire thing right when i get it back. If i dont i will think about it for hoursss.

Srubbing the shower everyday is a MUST. If i dont have extra time to do it, i feel like its the end of the world.

I have to shave my left armpit first LOL alright im done now

Whoa. Um, I bite my nails? And I squeeze the pores on my boyfriend's back ALL the time. He hates it. I also obsessively make sure I know how many calories I've ingested at all times, rounded to the nearest 10, even if I'm not watching my weight. I also have this weird habit of rubbing skin cells off with my fingertips from my neck and hands.

My dad on the other hand compulsively writes down license plate #'s as signs from god and used to drive everywhere at 83 mph because it was a magic number. He also has a meaning for every number. And there used to be weirder stuff but I wasn't born yet. He has/d OCD, and paranoid schizophrenia. And he's bipolar. Though he gets better with age. But there are some funny stories about him!

The dixieline logo tripped him out back in the day because it's a D (for David) above 3 (magic number) trees, and because he thought he was the reincarnation of Jesus or something.

Doc's "before I leave home" OCD checklist. I do this shit at least five times a week:

    1. Make sure bedroom fan is unplugged.
    2. Make sure bedroom light is off.
    3. Make sure bedroom door is closed.
    4. Go to bathroom and make sure the sink faucet is not running.
    5. Say the word "Edge" to confirm #4 (the first time I did this there was a can of Edge shaving gel on the counter).
    6. Make sure heater/AC thermostat is off.
    7. If there is bad weather (lightning), unplug the computer UPS from the wall outlet. Pull the phone line cord out of the UPS.
    8. Make sure the kitchen sink faucet is not running.
    9. Say the word "potatoes" to confim #8 (the first time I did this there was a box of instant potatoes on the counter).
    10. Grab all work stuff (if I'm going to work and shut off lights.
    11. Close door, lock door, turn the doorknob three times in both directions to confirm that it is locked.
    12. Say... A.)Today's date if going to work...
B.) Where I'm going if I'm heading someplace else, to further confirm #11.

If I can't remember if I completed each step, I have to start all over again in that precise order. Some nights I've almost been late to work because of this.

    Quote Originally Posted by PaigeDWinter

All my microwave food must be cooked to a precise time no less than the exact maximum recommended time on the box, not even one second, for fear that I'll get salmonella, e.coli, botulism, etc.

Also, I cannot cook microwave food on a "bad number" for fear that a tornado will hit the next day. A "bad number" has a last digit that is equal to or worse yet lower that the digit that preceded it. So say, if the box says cook for 1:30-2:00. I can't cook it for 1:59 because I'll get poisoned. I can't cook it for 2:00 because a tornado will hit. I have to cook it for 2:01, although as of late I'm making sure the last digit is higher than all of the other digits, so stuff like 2:04 is more likely.

And I thought I had the microwave time OCD all to myself. Thank you Paige, I feel so much better that I have someone who understands.

I'm a picker, big time, books, paper, my nails, little things sticking up on stuff that SHOULD be smooth, pick pick pick! That and I absolutely CAN NOT eat food that has been left over by a day. So if I make dinner and save it, hubby had better eat it sometime the next day or I will throw it out because it is surely toxic by that point!

I dated a girl one time who was OCD, Monk-like even.....I went to her apartment and by the door her shoes were lined up in size order, her sunglasses on the counter were all facing hte same way, exact distance apart and slanted with the slant of the wall. She made pizza rolls and couldn't just put them on the plate, she lined them up over and over until she was satisfied with the display......ouch.

Also i rember when i was really little i had to ask my mom the same set of questions each night before going to bed or else i couldn`t sleep. I asked her if she rememberd that and she said she just thought i was trying to stall becase i didn`t want to go to bed.

Obsessed with making sure oven is off/freezer is closed (have a chest freezer in basement) must get out of bed to check it tweice at night,

triskadekaphobic (that is 13's for all of you out there). Won't get out of bed if the clock is on a multiple of 13 (13, 26, 39, 52) in the minute column (826, for example) must stay in bed until it's 827 or the whole day is off. Seriously.

Like most of you I'm a chronic double-checker...especially making sure my windows are shut, water taps closed, front door & car doors locked. It all stems from when I would travel and say to myself "If I don't have it now, I didn't need it", only to get home and realize I left something behind (a pair of prescription sunglasses, a piece of clothing, etc.).

When I eat sunflower seeds I have to eat them in even amounts...which I manage by chewing them on alternate sides of my mouth (always starting on the left).

I count and re-count my money all the time. And when I arrange my notes in my wallet, it's always arranged in highest-to-lowest or lowest-to-highest denomination.

The only thing close to OCD is that I need to know where my car and house keys are at all times. They dont have to be on me specifically, but if I'm going around by day and suddenly realize I dont know where they are, I will stop what I am doing and find them.

At work I will look in my coat pocket maybe three times a night to make sure that they are still there.

I CONSTANTLY shred up paper, straw paper, money sometimes if Im not paying attention.

Also, I always have to pick the second thing I saw to buy. For example if I want a bag of doritos, I get the second one in the row. Always always.
