Default Tipping in Australia - Advice?

Okay I've lived here for almost a year now and I STILL don't understand tipping. My private cab driver always used to get tipped depending on how well I did that night and if he remembered what music I liked to hear (above and beyond - deserved tip!).

But once I was at a really really fancy dinner with my partner and I didn't know if I should tip at a fancy dinner. When I got the bill, there was even a TIP: line to fill in. So I tipped a twenty and left it at that. Michael says I shouldn't have tipped in this situation. Just because it's fancy doesn't mean you tip.

But then yesterday I had a really REALLY fancy hair salon cut my partner's hair and she did a great job and made sure not to cut too much (since I'm a trichophiliac)... I wanted to tip her because it was a fancy salon but I didn't know if I should.

Is a tip one of those 'happy rarities' someone gets or are they more common? Should I only do it in cases where someone does something specifically for me, such as the cab driver, or in a fancy situation?

    I still don't get it!

Generally you do not tip. It isn't custom here in Australia even at fancy restaurants... tho' you are free to tip someone if you feel that they have provided a service to you that is above and beyond the standard payment.

Don't forget the buskers tho' ... give them your change as that is just the polite human thing to do IMO. Even if you aren't actively enjoy-ing their performance I give them my change as at least they are doing something instead of sitting on their asses on the dole.

Lollers, I do give money to the buskers! Whenever I can. That's a payment, not a tip!

yeah tipping is really uncommon here. i sometimes tip taxi drivers, but only in the sense that if my fare comes to $18.10 and i only have a $20 i tell them to keep the change. if they were a bad driver or rude or sleazy, i don't do that.

generally tipping just isn't the custom here at all.

Not even in fancy upscale places?

    Good to know.

Not even in fancy upscale places. People only generally tip when it is a case of "keep the change" here in Australia more often than not. Granted, if you felt you received adequate service from someone in a fancy upscale restaurant then you can tip.

Tipping hairdressers is very very rare if it happens at all. Hospitality is where the tips are made (besides our industry) more often than not....

I disagree with the tipping at resturants. I always tip and cant think of any instance where Ive been out for a meal, enjoyed it and no-one has tipped! In some places as GCG said, it is often more the case of keep the change, but for an upscale place its common to tip.

I more often tip cab drivers too unless they are totally crap drivers which isnt very often. This is due to them averaging about $7 an hour in wages and me thinking that's fucked! I dont usually tip anywhere else. I did tip a hairdresser when I had my extensions done the first time. I think the moral is - you dont have to tip, but people will feel appreciated if you do from time to time (-:

I tipped a really expensive hairstylist at a fancy salon - it was the kind of place that brought free champagne for me to sip while my color set. I think the tip was less than AUS $10 though. And in fancy restaurants, I tipped 10%. I can't recall ever tipping anyone else (I never took a cab in Australia).

Yeah, this was that kind of salon. Damn being conditioned. I feel like I was supposed to tip but nobody expects it, so I did nothing wrong but still feel guilty. When in America, the world and it's brother yell at you for the size of your tips. After twenty years, being told to tip No One? Drives me bonkers.
