Default Stuck for day in a jury pool waiting room

Just doin' my part as a citizen.

But I am insanely bored--and have only been here for 20 minutes!

Considered downloading an e-book on Tantric sex just now. But it was $10 and I wasn't impressed by the author's writing style.

Tonight, after being a good citizen, I'm inclined to be whacky and stupid. Good news for the Scores staff tonight.

Oh, please everybody pray to the court gods for me that I don't land on a criminal jury. The next two weeks will be very busy at work, and I just don't have time to spend sitting in judgement on any low-rent criminals.

Tell them you work in a strip club. My husband went in on a jury duty call. As soon as he said his wife was a stripper he was dismissed! Dont know why, but thank goodness!
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.

Thanks, cam. But lying to a judge (since, alas, I am not a strip club employee or a dancer's hubby) is a big no-no. They also changed the law back in 1996 doing away with the automatic exemption for journalists. Blah.

Oh..sorry. Didnt mean to imply that you should lie. For some reason I thought you did work for a club.

No worries, CE; they'll figure out you have a degree or two and then you'll be out on the street again. Smart people rarely end up on juries because they don't fall prey to the show that is a trial.

    Agreed with CO.

It seems like all the people I was with that had (or even were in) college weren't picked.

It seems to me like this type of (presumably "legal") jury tampering is excessively common, which I suspect is why we see these totally insane verdicts coming out of the U.S. so often, where people are declared guilty of things in the most bizarre of ways. Presumably, there is also some self-selection among jurors, or something. I can hardly understand how else some of the more insane verdicts come out.

What is your opinion on it, after having been there, Chicagoeditor? I'm curious to know.

Still here. One observation: A good number of my fellow jurors look like gang-bangers. Then again, this may be appropriate since the goal of the jury system is to be judged by one's peers.

An imperfect system to be sure, Clara, but better than many alternative ones, in my opinion.

Hoping that if I must serve, I at least get on a cool case--like maybe that of a sexy dancer who chops up her cheating, unemployed musician boyfriend. "WE ACQUIT the defendant, your honor & the first round at Scores is on juror No. 6!"

Excellent! Been released. Didn't even see the inside of a courtroom. Works for me!

Oh shit ....this reminds me. I haven't sent my Juror Questionaire back. I should probably look for it, as it was sent to me like a year ago. To make matters worse, it's for a town far away that I don't even live near anymore. BUT, i still use the address, as it saves me from higher insurance rates and not having to buy a city sticker. So, yeah, I should probaby find that and fill it out. It's probably illegal that I haven't isn't it??

I had just registered myself on the electroial (sp?) role here in Australia at age 18 and only months later I was served with Jury Duty. To this day I am still the only person in my family to have served Jury Duty (and been on a Jury for a rape case).

It has been many many many years since that case. There was a grey area we all, as jurors, couldn't overcome and thus the guy won a not guilty verdict even tho' we all believed that he did play some part in the 'crime' yet so did the woman. The main part that made it all interesting for us and hence got the guy the not guilty vote was ... all the adults at the party were smoking weed and how would you NOT know it wasn't your husband on top of you when you are having sex with someone ???

Wouldn't you know how your HUSBAND moved, smelt, etc in re: sex so if it was someone else (in this case, a family friend) you would know almost immediately ? In the end we all were of the opionion that she probably did consent to it but later yelled rape for whatever reasons... we based this on what we heard during the trial.

I liked being part of the trial not the waiting around part (oh boy was that BORING!!!). I got a free lunch as well as being paid plus I felt the case was interesting enough.

I'm totally with you there. All I'm basically saying is that I'd improve it by making it harder to manipulate jury compositions, by:

    (a) improving pay for jurors to be income-replacement levels (a major reason people want to get off juries here is the financial hit)

    (b) making it very difficult to get off a jury

    (c) making it difficult to prevent someone from being on a jury

so that the selection would closely approach randomness. I'd partly compensate for the shortcomings it by making it slightly harder to convict: I'd let the accused walk if 11/12 (or maybe even 10/12) vote to acquit, rather than declaring a mistrial and possibly starting it all over again. Essentially, I'd require 12 to convict, but only 10 in favour of acquittal (instead of the 12 necessary now to avoid a mistrial). I think that this overall would be fairer to defendants, who otherwise can be put through the whole process again just because of one juror with strange views.

Interesting ideas, Clara. (Are you pre-law, perchance?) I suppose the system of jury consensus--rather than simple majority--was put in place with the best of intentions. For me, it harks back to Quaker decision-making: A long process of open discussion until everybody agrees. I'd argue that consensus-based systems work in communities with, as our Republican pals would say, "shared values." But expecting consensus from a group composed of very diverse people may be asking a lot. Then again, maybe I'm not giving jurys credit for doing their level best to consider the evidence, reach agreement and render a judgement.

Happily, I don't have to figure out this puzzle in person--this time.
