    Default Merena IUD info

I know there was another thread on this I'm just adding to it.

My friend who had the merena IUD had her second one come out. Her doctor said that the reason is because she has never had children so it doesn't fit right. It's recomended for women who have but was used in her case to attempt to controll her periods and cramps. She said that having it expell is very painfull.

Yeah, I was considering an IUD to get off of BC pill craziness, but all these threads have sold me off of it!

I have it and I LOVE it.

It is absolutely the BEST $700 I have ever spent on ANYTHING ($400 for the IUD, $300 for insertion - mine wasn't covered by insurance). My periods are much lighter ( I barely even have to use light tampons these days) and I'm in a committed relationship, so no condoms! No worries! It is the most effective form of birth control next to having your tubes tied.

I don't know how well women who haven't had children do with it. I have 1 child. I've heard it can be expelled but not sure of the % chance of that happening in women who haven't had children.

Insertion sucks, and it feels like terrible menstrual cramps for a day or two, then for me it was followed by about 2 weeks of slight crampy feelings. Now it's great (I've had it for a year) and my man can only feel the small strings with his fingers, not his manhood.

Your doc is wrong- his/her info is outdated. FYI, IUD has a long history in other countries for women that's never had children, and I agree that the problems for women that have never given birth are negligible- an exception and not the norm. No birth control is perfect for everyone, they all have their drawbacks.

My second paragard expelled about 5 or 6 months ago and I've had 2 kids. I honestly believe (and my FNP even alluded) it was due to improper placement to begin with. I never even knew that it wasn't in correctly I only found out when I had my annual exam so God only knows how long it wasn't even working!

I've had my mirena for over three years and I love it. I've never had kids. It hurt like a bitch going in and I cramped for a few days afterwards. Then I bled for three months straight, probably my body cleaning out or something. But I had trouble getting periods so that was probably long overdue. Now I hardly ever bleed at all and rarely get cramps.

I am not the patient on this matter so I don't have the first hand experience. I just wanted to let those interested know that this can happen. While it may be the exception and not the norm according to my firends doctor , most of the women who do expell it have not have children. I know eveyone is different and may have different experinces with merena. I do agree that no birth control is perfect for everyone but knowing what could happen can and should encourage those interested in this to have an open and frank discussion with their doctor.
