Do what I'm doing. I also pay for school by dancing, but I also do volunteer work a few hours a week, so when it's time for me to start doing my resume, I'll be able to put down that I have job-related experience (office work and working with people).
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.
It could happen. Definitely something to consider.
Maybe you can wear your hair differently now than you will when you're on TV...will cut down on the guys that recognize you.
You'll probably end up anchoring outside of your current town anyways, though.
Feature costumes for sale!
You could wear a wig while you dance if you don't want to change your hair.
It's always a possibility, but as scarlett said, you'll probably be dancing and anchoring in two different places. If you pick a local stip club to work, vs a 'destination' club, you should be fine...

Also try working somewhere you dont need a licsense. If guys think they recognize you its not a big deal if they can't prove it.
I encourage you in your desire to get an education and go into the TV news business. In a perfect world, you could be a dancer, nude model, etc. and then go onto TV later. However, I don't think you are being realistic, nor do you seem to understand the business world--and make no mistake, TV is a business. If you don't tell them you were a stripper, and someday, somehow, someone there finds out, they will not be happy, and may even fire you. At the very least it will show them you are a risk and can't be trusted to be a permanent part of their "team". They are paying people a good salary to create an image, and a potential embarassment like that could cost them ad revenues if some of their clients leave because of a "stripper anchor" scandal. And remember, TV news is still journalism (or tries to be) and the first rule of that business is to cover the news, not BE the news. Since you are still young, you may not realize that most of the people who will hold your career in their hands are a lot older than you, and don't look too sympathetically on someone stripping to pay the bills, (especially since they had to make do with other jobs in college). Those of us 40+ and older tend to want to hire mature, smart, driven people who won't make the company look bad later on. But if your passion is with dancing, you may have to choose between that and a TV career. Unless you're so beautiful that Playboy puts you on their shows.
Hope this doesn't discourage you, but I thought you needed a reality check. Good luck in whatever you decide.
Another note: I'm betting you have the skills to do this job. But do you have the common sense yet? By that I mean these jobs are very much about "office politics"---who you know as much as what you know. The business world is divided into 2 types: those who want to make money, and those who plan to make the right friends. To succeed, it is better to be ambitious than greedy.

As harsh as smoothcat's words sound, they're pretty dead-on. People do not look kindly on former strippers. Most even slightly conservative people (who are the people who run the WORLD) who hear that will assume you used to be a prostitute and a druggie. You'd be ok being a writer or producer, but anchorwoman? Nope. You need to be as impeccable as a prudish, virginal-until-marriage senator's wife (even though the senator probably would prefer to be married to a stripper... and probably has a stripper-quality mistress).

Thanks V.S...This may sound like a bad movie script, but it has probably already happened to someone in the biz: blackmail. Even if in one town they don't know, someday you will be on TV and a former customer recognizes you and sees a potential meal ticket, and you're then in a tough spot. Just something to consider.
Do what you love. But maybe you can only love one thing at a time.![]()

Smoothcat hit it on the head.
I have an AA in Audio/Visual production and a BA in Communications (Media Studies tract) and have been involved with broadcasting to some extent since the mid 90's. When it comes to jobs in front of the camera, the business is fickle and image is EVERYTHING.
However,
For every person you see in front of the camera there are 100 jobs behind the camera. It's a fun industry don't be discouraged.

They could be right, and I could just be naive but I think they could be overreacting a little bit. I think youd be fine as long as you changed your look. Go for like a gothic work look or something thats completely different from how you want to look on camera. As long as your not doing it at the same time, I think you could. I'm planning on being a teacher - I'm sure they wouldnt take kindly to that, I'm just going to move to a different city when Im out of college. I think if you stepped lightly you could. Just my .02

I would not worry about being found out unless there were some photographs of you in your stripping days or you told everybody where you worked that you were going to be a TV anchor at some point. As somebody else said there will be a year or 2s gap and a different town, some of your old customers might see you and think you look familiar but unless they have got pictures they will never be certain.
If a story like that does come out it's normally { in the UK anyway where it would not be that big a deal} an ex boyfriend or ex flatmate spilling the beans for money, if you keep your 2 lives very seperate you should be able to avoid this.

I have had a degree in journalism for eight years and I still dance. Soooo, if you're asking about job prospects, I'd say, go get a degree in business. lol.
But, I think what you are saying is that you want to do television. I really doubt anyone would find out that you danced. Places don't dig that deep for info, usually. I mean, it could come up, but any publicity is good publicity when you are in a field like that.
Check out my new eBay auctions.......

start thinking outside the 'box' .... last year I received a solicitation from Naked News in Toronto which, if I hadn't been on the verge of retirement, would have been extremely interesting to explore. So instead of thinking that journalism and nudity are mutually exclusive, consider the possibility that some exotic dancing experience could in fact be a major plus !!!
how about if you take loans now and if the newslady career doesn't work out, dance later to pay off your loans?
I'm just going by what you said...Originally Posted by Joplin

I just think it's better to pursue the newslady career first because you can backtrack and be a dancer later, but not vice versa. But I'm assuming you've never danced. It might not be something you like afterall.

i personally dont think it will hurt your future if you dont do it for long. there really is no way to prove it anyhow. And if someone says, "hey dont i know you?" You just say, "hmm, i guess i just have one of those faces."
there's always someone out there who resembles you anyways.
and if it does become a scandal later on--you have a publicist to handle that stuff. When you deny it, it only gets worse, but when you say, "yeah i danced in college...and?" with no shame or regret. People cant knock you anyway. You've got your degree, and interned your ass off--you earned your credentials. Just tell your publicist first, lol.
Hell, I got friends in law school that escort...that would hurt you more.
I'm getting my Dial-A-Stripper service up and running again. If you are in NYC or NJ and are interested in private party dancing, email [email protected] with your SW handle, contact info, photo (if you have one) & best time to call and I'll get back to you asap.
If you're having a party and need strippers, email me with the details and any questions you have. Thanks!

I have a degree in journalism, and am pursuing a career in mainstream entertainment. I know that people will find out about my stripping somehow. Oh fucking well. My point is, if you pursue a role in news journalism, you'd better be strong enough to handle the reactions and judgements thrown your way should your secret become revealed. Make sure that you give people every reason to like you. When you work in the public eye, you have to have a very strong sense of who you are. You also have to learn not to give a shit about what anyone else thinks of you. As long as you know you are a good person, then that is all that matters.
Good luck! And spell check!![]()
