    Default Moving Trucks

Ok.. So, Dan lost his job today. That's 2 since we've been here. They accused him of taking $20 and fired him. He told them that if he was going to steal money from his job, it'd be a hell of a lot more than $20 he'd go down for. I'm uber-stressed and about ready just to give the fuck up. Anyway...

We've decided just to get out of here and get back home to Rhode Island. We were planning it anyway, now it's just happening sooner than we'd planned.

Of course, cash is light right now.. But we're going to see if our families can help us out with moving and getting a place. Ugh.

So, do any of you know the best (and cheapest) moving truck rental company to go with? We'd need a fairly large truck (we're moving from a 3-bedroom), and a tow dolly for the car.

U-Haul is NOT an option, because they fucked us when we took the trip down here, as some of you may remember.

I know of Budget and Penske. How are they? Anyone have experience with them? Any others that you know of? We are also 4 now, instead of 3. So, we'd need a really roomy and comfortable truck.

Thanks for any info you guys can give.

I have found that sometimes it is cheaper to UPS boxes than to actually rent a vehicle to put them in. You may be able to save a bit of money by doing that and getting a smaller vehicle for the more awkward items.

We used Penske. I think that they're a little more expensive...but when they reserve a truck for you, its there.

Unlike U-Haul...who said we'd have a truck for the weekend we were going to move...only to go get it and they had no trucks until 4 days AFTER we needed it.

I've never tried Budget, but they always have internet specials on their rentals and such.

    Good luck, sweetie!!

I just rented a truck from Budget a week ago with a tow dolly. It was about $1300 for a one way move of about 650 miles in a 15 foot truck (one-bedroom apartment). They didn't give me any instructions on the tow dolly other than a brochure which wasn't even for the same dolly I had. The straps kept coming off the wheels of the car. I did get a 10% off coupon from a change of address packet at the post office so that helped a little. I price compared a bit online and everything I looked at added up about the same. all were pretty expensive.

Yeah.. Dan priced trucks earlier, and they're all around the $1300-$1400 range. Tow Dolly setup isn't a problem, because he worked for Alamo years ago and had to repo rentals that people stopped paying for. He's used just about every kind of Dolly.

U-Haul fucked us with our move down here because although we'd reserved a Truck and Dolly 2 months in advance.. When moving day rolled around, they had no Dolly in RI. We were thrown off a day and had to leave the next morning, and drive the truck and car to Groton (CT), and get a Dolly at a location there. So, they're definitely out for this move. Plus, the truck that we had was all beat up, and had no radio (BAD for a 2-day trip).

Deo.. We might look into shipping some stuff back home, but we've got A LOT of shit.

We also looked into PODS. But, uh, that would cost us over $3000. So, that's definitely out.

I'm not sure how they're rates compare, but some Enterprise locations also rent trucks.

Fedex is actually suprisingly cheaper pound for pound, a 50 pound box costing around 25 more to ship with UPS to the same destination. We shipped a one bedroom, total of 6 BIG boxes, for about 125 with Fedex, about 800 miles.

I've never rented a moving truck from penske. but the company i used to work for we rented several Tractors from penske (one was a continuous rental). Never had any problems with them. I would expect them to be just as good with regards to moving trucks. So all else being equal price wise, i'd go with them.

oh, and was it exactly $20? because if thats the case, thats lame. all that was is two $20bills sticking together. were they new bills?

when i worked at the bank tellers were off $20 all the time because of it. if it was a continuous issue, then i could understand them firing for negligence. but for a onetime deal, thats wrong.

I don't know, Babes.. The Manager just claims it was $20. Dan spoke to the District Manager today after he came home, and supposedly he's going to be investigating it. He'll also be investigating the Manager in that store, because the drawer has been short EVERY NIGHT since that Manager came in a couple of months back. Dan rarely touches the drawer, except when the Manager cuts out early and the deposit needs to be done. When Dan's done the drawer and deposit up until now, it's NEVER been short. But, as it stands right now, he's out of a job. I've been telling him for the past couple of months to get a transfer to another store, because this Manager didn't like him. Of course, he didn't listen, and now we're fucked.

And when you live paycheck to paycheck like we do, when you've got to plan a move in such little time, it makes things very difficult.

Jeez, Rhia...I'm really sorry to hear that. Considering that we're still living paycheck to paycheck I know how it is.

I don't know about moving companies, but I hope you guys get moved soon!

    Thanks, Deni. I appreciate it.

ArmySGT.. That's something we can look into I'm sure. But wouldn't that run about the same as moving it ourselves? I've only done that a few times, but it was paid for by the Navy, so we (me & the ex-Husband that is) never saw a bill.

I just priced Penske.. That's the lowest we've gotten so far. It's $1,111.77 including the car carrier. That may be who we go with, unless you guys have any horror stories about them.

Rhi really sorry to hear that babe I can only imagin how stressed you must be with your new baby and all. I remember you saying to someone the other day that you plan on moving back to RI... everything happens for a reason. WTF is up with the manager anyway why would you fire someone when you haven't even investigated the incident first.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to rent a truck and move yourselves? The only chain company I know of is Ryder they have them all over the world and all over the states and they are really good. You could also look in your local directory and find an independent moving truck company but sometimes they can be dodgy. I know that U-haul have fucked over a LOT of people too.

I used Penske when I moved down to San Diego and 800+ mile trip. I got my clean truck with everything I requested when I went to go pick up the truck. The trucks cab was clean and felt much sturdier than Uhaul. The Penske truck felt like it ran better than the last Uhaul I rented. Ive used Uhaul before too. I like Penske much better than Uhaul.

Im sorry Rhia that he lost his job over something that they accused him of. Im with him; if that were me Id steal a hellava lot more than 20 bucks. At least both of you and the kids

    Rhiannon,

I have heard of others doing this. Inventory your household goods (number, type, serial number, etc) ,Pack your household goods up in boxes, place on pallet, wrap with the roll plastic, number (example 1of7 , 2of 7, 3of 7, etc. Contract a shipping or transportation company and it is moved as freight. Compare freight costs between companies this will be based on weight, distance, and time required. Be prepared to live for 12-30 days out of your bags until the freight arrives.

Last time we moved back to Philly from Tampa, we played the companies off each other. Budget, Uhaul, Ryder...we called them all. "Oh, really? Well, ____ said it would only be x amount." We dropped about 230 bucks doing that for an hour, going back and forth. It's annoying, but hey...that's a considerable savings. The last time we used Uhaul the truck was a POS, and had a limiter that they didnt bother to mention, so it wouldnt go above 60, with the pedal all the way to the floor and no cruise control. THAT was a fun drive. Uhaul can suck it. I dont remember who we ended up with as the cheapest...is it Budget or Ryder that has those stupid cartoons on their trucks now? You know..."Moving tip#34..." etc, with the stick figures? Budget, I think. Whichever company that is, they were cheapest. That was 3.5 years ago though. Good luck, buttercup.

If you do as ArmySGT is suggesting, there ARE some cheaper companies that my company and our suppliers use. Not sure if they do residential, but some of the cheaper bills I see are from:

    DWI-MAR
    CSX
    Yellow Freight
    ABF Freight

It's not a bad idea in theory, but it seems like it'd be a lot of headache to go through in order to save a couple hundred $$.

I know DWI-MAR, for example, ships THOUSANDS of lbs of product from our TN plant to our Chicago plant and our bills are about $875. If you do that, you could rent one of those boxy things with wheels that you can attach to your car and you could put all the essentials in there. I'm not sure how much that would save you in the end. (I'm sure your cost would end up less than ours....your furniture shouldn't weigh as much as our loads)

I hope it all works out for you guys. Sorry that you have to go through all the drama over something so ridiculous.

Thanks so much for that information, HK. I'm going to try and contact them. If we can avoid driving a truck all that way again, I'd be all for it. That way we could just all drive comfortably in the car back up there. I did an estimate request online last night and by this morning, my email was full and I had 4 voice messages on my phone. I'm going to do some research online about all the companies before I call any of them back.

We don't have a whole hell of a lot, but it's still quite a bit. We're moving from a 3-bedroom duplex. The third bedroom of course, is Hunter's. So, there's no bed in there (well.. anymore, that is.. I sold the Queen bed set that was in there, just last night.) So I guess it's more like 2 1/2 Bedrooms.

I just checked ABF. They do residential moves, but it'd cost about $2600. I'll check the others when I have some time later.

Uhh i hate moving with a passion... Everytime i have done it i always found it was just cheaper (and less stressful) in the long run to sell ALL furniture in the newspaper, garage sale etc. and then buy new or used furniture when i got to my new destination. Then like a few others suggested send everything else UPS or something of that sort. Hope you find something that works for you and i wish you the best of luck with the move as i know how incredibly stressful they can be.

Remember to specify that you are requesting pick up and delivery only. The company shows up wi a fork lift and truck.

    There is another method....

Buy a connex......... Those shipping containers that everything comes in. 20, 40, 55 feet long, and 8ft wide by 8 ft high. One 20 footer should move every thing you own.

I think you live near a major city so with a few phone calls you can fid one. Price to move one of these is per mile. Since only one will fit on trailer. Makes a nice storage shed later. No one but you puts your hands on the items inside.

Lady Gwen's mom has been using Penske. The good stuff is they are clean new trucks, and they gave her a decent discount & an extra day to return the truck because she had to drive it over the state line here to return it. So, they're reasonable & she's using them again soon.

I've used u-haul and penske. Penske is the best, cleanest, cheapest, and easiest to drive. The people at the penske places were also more mellow, and treated customers fairly.
Good luck with your move, I'll keep you in my thoughts.
