It's not possible to prevent migraine from developing, but sufferers can reduced the risk of attacks by eating regularly, taking regular breaks, exercising regularly, and avoiding migraine triggers. Keeping a headache diary can help identify these. Common ones include:

Food – missing meals and hunger. Some people do identify specific foods and drinks as triggers.
    Hormones - for example menstruation.
Environment - heat, cold, light, noise.
Stress - anxiety, physical and mental fatigue.

Painkillers, anti-sickness medication and specific drugs to treat migraine are available to relieve the symptoms. Those people with frequent attacks may be advised to take medication everyday to try and prevent attacks occuring.

Chiropractic may also help or even massage.
Food or enviromental allergies may be a cause.
If you make a note of what foods he eats each day, what he does each day (as in what things he may be exposed to ie something in the enviroment like a perfume or colone, washing powder or fumes etc could even be an underlying cause.) and when the migraines occur you may see some sort of pattern...

My nephew had migrains so severe his eyes would stop working and he would go into a coma. There is a specialist at the mayo clinic that deals with headaches this severe. He needs to see a specialist.

Yup. As a matter of fact I had one yesterday early in the morning and I had to get an injection at the emergency. I'm still feeling it a little bit, this one was really strong. The injection they give you in the hospital works very well. It starts to leave fast/calm down alot.

But usually I know when i'm about to get it. As soon as I feel one of my eyes pulsate a bit, I immdiately take Excerdrin and that prevents it from happening. But if I don't take in time, nothing will work unless I vomit or get an injection.

LOW MAGNESIUM!!! Get him to take a blood test to rule this out.

I suffered from really bad migraines and then in July I was hospitalized because I was very ill during pregnancy anyway I had all sorts of shit wrong with me but mainly an electrolyte imbalance... which btw is very dangerous. Anyway to make a long short I have given magnesium through IV for a week and I also take MagOX now which is the best magnesium supplement out there and hand to god I haven't had not ONE migraine since.

If you Google magnesium deficiency you will be amazed at what you find and the health problems that it causes.

Also If he consumes products with Aspartame (artificial sweetner) he should cut down on those too.

    Seraya.

I get a mixture of headaches from sinusitis and migraines. I went to chiropractor for a while which seemed to help both. I keep caffeine to a minimum, try not to get stressed out, and make sure i eat. When i used to be anorexic i had migraines daily almost all day.
When i have a migraine i try to keep away from bright lights and just go into my bed and snooze hoping it won't still be there the next day. Even if it's 2pm i'll still snooze lol.
I have found doctors aren't very helpful with the problem, often telling you to take paracetamol. But the only painkiller i found to work is my grans angina tablets.

Perhaps he should go to the doctor anyway to determine the causes then they will be easier to treat in one way or another.

Have him drink a caffeinated soda right off the bat. Caffeine restricts blood vessels, which in the case of a headache is good. Even doctors suggest it.

Oh shit I totally forgot about this home remedy too. It's freaking gross but it does work!! Black coffee with squeezed lemon in it.

This is not always true. Some people have migraines because they are consuming WAY too much caffeine.

I think you need to look at what he is consuming in his day...what's his stress level? Go from there...if you cannot pinpoint a trigger, then it would be strongly advised to go see a specialist to rule out any internal problems that need to be dealt with.

Also the problem with just using a vasoconstrictor, is that there are 4 phases to a migraine. Not everyone experiences all of them which is why a vasoconstrictor can work, but if you do go through the phases, you get vasoconstriction before the vasodilation phase, so you're going to exacerbate the pain in one phase.

If there is no medical history of migraines in the family, and he can't figure out his trigger, or they began suddenly, or have increased in frequency, he has to go to the doctors.

The most useful medications, serotonergics, are prescription only (imitrex/imigran, zomax, relpax). They work better than NSAIDS because they prevent the release of lots of neurotransmitters, which is part of the migraine pain mechanism.

Haha sorry for the nerdiness, I just finished summarising my lectures on 5HT mediated responses and there was a big chunk on migraines.

Doctor. Perscription. Seriously. Tell him not to be such a drama queen. I always wonder about people who are clearly in need of medical help (like if you throw up from a migraine, you are clearly in need of medical help) who just don't want to go, seemingly on a whim. I know I'm getting a migraine before the headache because I get auditory hallicinations. (I start looking around, going, "does anyone else hear that?"), and just take the damn meds.

Not to be used instead of medical intervention, but I've also heard that weed is good. Don't smoke it, that will make it worse. I've heard that if you steep it, it has some good results with some people.

^ Yep, don't smoke weed for headaches. I tried that for a bad flu-related headache & it made it twice as bad, the pain started PULSING. What a waste of green.

I too suffer from migraines. I tried almost every pain medication and I seem to become immune to them all even excedrin. I have also thrown up and been dizzy because of it. I have been doing some research on accupuncture and am going to try that. They say the "chi energy" in your body effects alot of the nerves and blood vessels and that if the energy is off there could be a hormonal imbalance in the body. I think this may be true, seeing as I mostly get migraines the week of my period and the week after. It seems logical to me that accupuncture has a very good shot at working, considering the procedure puts needles in specific areas targeting the pressure points and nerve endings and then sends an electronic pulse through all the nerves creating a harmonious balance of the nerves and hormones. They say that bad blood circulation can cause migraines, heart attacks and hormonal imbalance. Supposedly accupuncture, if you go to the recommended treatments, is very effective on all of the above and helps treat tendonitis and helps infertile couples get pregnant. So maybe do a little research on accupuncture and see if he would be willing to it. After all there's no medicine involved, and the energy imbalance of your body just gets a makeover.

all migraines are different. Imitrex and those migraine meds don't help mine at all. I have to take vicodin. I still get nauseated and feel like crap, but am able to sleep through the headache and not feel like I was hit in the head with a hammer. Mine are in large part hormonal.

I suffered from migraines for about 6 years at their worst it was one every couple of days. I had acupuncture and after one session never have had another migraine since. I continued with the course for a couple of months and so far so good.

How much per session did you pay? I seriously need to get in quickly. Migraines are coming more frequently now, maybe due to stress. Almost on a constant daily basis. Already went through a bottle of excedrin in a week and a half.

I suffer from migraines too. I can't stand the light or noise or strong odors when I have one. I take Inderal (sp) twice daily as a preventitive and Imitrex when I do get one. B2 vitimins help some people too 300 to 500 mg daily, although it didn't help me. Feverfew can also help.

Good luck finding him some relief, there's nothing worse than a migraine.

I paid £30 per session dont know what U.S prices are like. If you sign up for a few sessions you should get a discount though. It is expensive but Im so glad I did it, I was losing money from not being able to work when I had a migraine. Its definitely worth it.
