Hey, that's you guys, not us! We're just reciprocating. I always cross the border with a passport anyways...less hassle.

Thats not even close to what the proposed bill is all about:

I was looking for a mention of this on the DHS website, but have yet to locate it. http://www.dhs.gov
Anyway, just having a passport doesn't gaurantee your exit or entry anymore if this proposed bill is passed.
They are so expensive to get. I think mine was about $90 with picture and postage.
this isn't really that new. They've been warning us about this a few years. If you waited until now to get your passport, you're in for a long wait!

In the process of getting mine. I'm going to Edinburgh next May, and I just want to be prepared!

Yah, they last for 10 years(if you're over 15, i assume most everyone here is). So theres no excuse for not having one. Why wait to the last minute?
You only need two photos, shouldn't cost more than $10 for that. Otherwise here is the rate charges:

You can get an application you print yourself off the website or at pretty much any post office and some libraries.
I've never had a need for one, but it looks like I'm heading to Mexico in March for Boyfriend's brother's wedding...I've already picked up my application...
I went to Cancun in September and we were required to have passports.

Expensive at $90? o.O; It's a passport that allows you to travel the world - that's a minor expense! Mine was last minute and ended up being an emergency passport - a cost of $180.
Anyway, there's (apparantly) a new law being passed requiring all Americans to be APPROVED before leaving the country?
Can someone confirm?

wow. so its normal for americans to not have passports? i dont know of a single person here without one!
i always thought it was weird to NOT have one.
hmmm and travelling to another country (ie canada and mexico) are still 'international' destinations, im not suprised your ment to have a passport.
yeah, it is weird that so many Americans don't have passports, but to be fair, there are so many places we could go without needing one. To go to another continent is a big (expensive) deal.

For traveling outside of North America, a passport has always been required, but only a photo ID is neccesary traveling to a neighboring country (Canada or Mexico), at least until this new law takes effect. Some other countries have similar agreements with their neighbors.Originally Posted by mermaidnz

Wow, um, that's not what it's about. XD (Passports, I mean.)
What it's *really* about is just another thing to add to my "Cons of Staying in the U.S. After I Graduate" list.

I was thinking more along the lines of going through canada as there are a lot of places in vermont you can cross over with no border patrol. getting into canada is no problem, its getting back into the US that i'd need to go backroads.Originally Posted by Deogol
**Edit** ok, i realize i responded seriously to a joke post, but thats because I'm actually thinking of having to do this.
My tin-foil crowd friend told me they are going to be putting RFID tags into passports starting in Jan so "they" can track us anywhere in the world......

I believe the requirement applies to flying to Canada and Mexico. You can still cross on ground transportation with a driver's license. However, on January 1, 2008, it'll be all passports. I think that's correct.
Well, you can probably get out of the country just fine.
It's the whole getting back into the country that can be hard.
Hell, I even have taken to carrying my passport when I go to southern Texas just so I can wiz through those border checkpoints on the highways and back roads.
It's getting a little fucking ridiculous.

^^Speaking of those south Tx border patrols, when I lived in Corpus Christi I went down to Mexico a few times. Border patrol always questioned ME a little more thoroughly than my mostly latin friends when we'd return - and I had a passport. One asshole in particular kept asking me stupid questions trying to trip me upFucking tard. I guess he thought I was a coyote
