    Angry So I got a counterfeit $20...

Throughout the night at work I trade in all my 1's, as I hate to leave with hundreds of dollars in ones *pain in the ass to deposit at my bank*. So last week I traded in about 1500 bucks in 1's total, most of which I received 20's for. Somewhere in that mix, I received a counterfeit 20. I never really checked my money, as it was coming from the bar, and frankly I didn't think about it.

So, I go to my bank today, deposit 700 bucks in 20's, and a few hundreds, and leave. They call me shortly after to tell me that one of the 20's was fake, and that they were debiting my account for 20 bucks and calling the FBI. They asked where I got it, I told them at work, though it would be impossible for me to trace it's origin because I work in a bar. They told me the FBI would be in contact.

Ok, so that's bad enough. But now I go to pay one of my bills with my debit card, and my card is declined. There is MORE than enough money in there, so I assume they must have frozen my account. I left a message for the manager, but haven't heard back. Anyone know how long this will last??? Or what I need to do to get it unfrozen? Also, anyone else have experience with having to deal with the FBI over counterfeit money?

... basically, until the FBI satisfies themselves that you are an 'innocent victim' regarding the counterfeit bill, rather than an accomplice.

I would also add that the strong likelihood that the FBI will move on to investigating your club after they satisfy themselves that you are an 'innocent victim' is highly likely to result in increased LE attention at the state / local level as well. If anything is happening at your club that constitutes 'bending the law', you should definitely tip off your clubowner and other dancers that they should 'clean up their act' in a hurry because the FBI and state / local LE probably won't waste much time showing up at your club !

Lovely. Well, I found out my account isn't frozen, their system is just down and not allowing transactions. I already talked to the manager at work about it, and warned her that they'd probably be after her next. LE is at our club alot anyway, luckily we're a really clean club and don't have much to worry about, but I'll watch for that as well. Thanks.

Look for IRS to start sniffing around as well.

I am always a bit concerned about this risk when I deposit my cash. It sucks. Sorry to hear this happened to you. I am sure that as soon as the officials see you only had one fake $20 in a stack of bills, they will leave you alone in regards to the counterfeit situation. Of course that doesn't mean the IRS and such won't keep poking...

    Point #1: I'm a complete moron.

Question: Is it worth buying one of those pens that tests the validity of 20's?

The pens don't work. I've heard countless reports of those pens being tested on all sorts of things from newspaper to Kleenex and showing that they are "good bills".

Now, this all being said, I wouldn't even worry about the IRS, FBI, or any other agency snooping around. This sort of thing happens all the time. My wife works in the restaraunt industry and she sees counterfeit bills about once a month or more as a result of the teenage kids she has working for her who accidentally take them. If you had made a deposit and had a lot of counterfeit bills, that's one thing. But one bill in the mix of a lot of others, especially since you have no history of doing this, means that you just got one accidentally and the bank, FBI, etc., all know that. They aren't going to hassle you or the club for just one bill...these things happen. My bet is your club probably gets these things way more often than you realize.

The best thing you can do is be better prepared. Cashing in $1,500 in singles means you'll be getting back 75 $20 bills. Your first thing is to stop doing ths practice and cash your singles in much more often. This will allow you to better look at all the bills you are getting back. It's a lot easier on the tired brain to look at ten bills for possible counterfeit than it is to look at 75. Next, understand that most GOOD counterfeits are made as $100.00 bills, not $20.00 bills. Generally, someone is going to invest more to make sure their higher denomination of bill looks better because they know the chances are higher that someone is going to look. So understanding this, realize that most bad $20 bills are going to be REAL bad counterfeits. Usually, they'll be something like a printed copy on a color printer which is easy to detect because the watermark will now be obvious and there will be no inserted security strip inside the paper.

The most common type of bad Twenty though is the corner scam. What the counterfeiter does is take four $20 bills and cut a different corner off of each of the four bills. They then take these four corners and tape or glue them over the respective corners on a $1 bill. So what they did was keep the four $20s in tact (only one corner missing so the bill is still good) and wasted one $1 bill, so they just made a $19 profit. Usually the scam is then followed up by how the bill is passed. The counterfeiter usually will hand the bill to the Mark folded in half and their finger over the president's face on the bill. This way, the recipient only sees the "20" corners and assumes it's a $20 bill.

There are a lot of ways to catch a bad bill, but the watermark and the corners you should always watch for nowadays. So get your exchanged money in smaller amounts and always look at each bill in a lighted area to be on the safe side. If you have a bill you suspect is bad, give it right back and ask for another. Ultimately, that's the best way to protect yourself from this happening again.

I'm rather amazed to hear that the bank can do this. You aren't a professional bank teller, so it is understandable that you might miss a dud. But they work in the bank ... if they miss it, that is their problem. How can they be sure after you have paid it in that it was yours? One presumes that they have a pile of 20s in the drawer.

If a bank did that to me I'd complain like mad and introduce them to the term ex-gratia payment. They would (and have) behaved the same way now it is the other way around.

Ah... they know it came from her because they tend to count it out on the counter.

^^But she said they called her AFTER SHE LEFT to say that one bill was fake. Seems like they should've left her alone since they didn't catch it while she was standing there at the counter.

Usually a bank will let the customer know immediately that one of their bills is counterfeit because the bank knows it immediately (in most cases). Some banks though will tag the bill and turn it in to the Secret Service (not the FBI...the Secret Service deals with counterfeit money) to see if the customer has a history of such fraud. Most likely the bank knew the bill was bad immediately and didn't say anything until after an investigation was done, then they called her.

Contact your local SS field office. THey give out good pens, that work, for free.

The SS is rather helpful, actually.

Thanks for all your input guys. I typically can tell when I see a fake bill, but I totally missed it this time. DW, I do change in my bills periodically, about 100-200 at a time, but I must not have noticed in the bar either. Plus, it was a 20 dollar bill, I didn't assume many people would waste their time with that lol.

They called me after, the cashier girl didn't notice it, I'm sure she noticed when she recounted, as at first she counted as fast as I did...hence missing it. Funny that the secret service deals with it though, considering the lady practically drilled it into my head that the FBI would be calling me.

Hey, back when I was a DA, my only counterfieting case (or arrest, I should say, it all got turned over to the feds) was $50K in fake fives and tens. Bad ones, too. The SS came, snatched it all up, snatched the dude up, and I never heard from any of it again.

Fives and tens. Ya never know.

And $50K no less. That's a lot of fives and tens. Took the dude a lot of time, and cost the dude a lot of time, if you get my drift. And what got the dude arrested? An expired registration sticker on his license plate! No lie. There's no accounting for people.

Stick around long enough you'll probably see a fake single.

Fake 5s and 10s are probably more common than you think, because people don't think about THOSE bills being fake

Ya, the store I do my grocery shopping at is checking all their 5/10's, because they've had lots of them coming in. Bad for the rest of us, but free food for them....

I wanted to bump this thread. Since I read it, I don't let a guy leave the dance room until I can (relatively discreetly) check the bills for security strips. Hope it's given other girls a wakeup call too. It can be so hard to determine if newer bills are real or not. They're so frikkin shiny and crisp!

Just a heads up...last time i was at the grocery store they had a scanner to test for conterfeit bills. They said that some of the new methods are undetectable with the pen.
Apperently the criminals have once again bypassed the laws technology...

Yeha it sucks..but realisrtically...you cant check every bill..at least not without looking like a jerk. If you got one fake bill in how long dancing?? Pretty good odds. I know it still is a pain to 1) have your bank suspect you 2) have the FBI in your club nad 3) lose $20......but when you think about how much cash we deal with and the amount of fakes out there....stats show that we are going to get a fake sooner or later...occupational hazard.

Though the bar should cover it since it was given to you by them!(of course they wont though)
People always ask me, did I ever learn anything when I was a stripper? Yeah, I did. One man plus two beers equals 20 dollars.
