    Default "Keep Young and Beautiful"

Alright... I have this song by Annie Lennox called "Keep Young and Beautiful"- it sounds like it could be almost be something out of the 1920s, but the lyrics are incredibly tongue-in-cheek ("What's cute about a little cutie? It's her beauty, not brains.... keep young and beautiful if you want to be loved..." etc).

I think it's an adorable song and could *possibly* work well, especially if I wear maybe my pink corset or some really girly things... but I'm worried that it's either too different, or the lyrics just don't work (give it a listen, you'll see what I mean). On the other hand, I almost feel like the guys wouldn't really listen to the lyrics and would just like the style- and the lyrics could be kind of my own little "in your face" moment... kind of laughing about the whole business.

Has anyone heard this song? Would anyone be open to downloading it so you could tell me what you think? Your comments/suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

I know the song, and love it - but I do think it's meant to be very poignant. "Keep young and beautiful. It's your duty to be beautiful! Keep young and beautiful, if you want to be loved." Beyond poignant, even, it's really a very sad song. I picture it being sung by Annie in her full-blast drag queen persona, an aging starlet sitting in front of the dressing room mirror, realizing she'd slowly losing her power forever.

I think its sex appeal is a tough call. I mean, believe me, there are nights when I'd love to dance to Ani DiFranco's "Letter to a John" and sneer at the customers, but I'd be shooting myself in the foot. HOWEVER, I could see this working as part of a burlesque-y themed set, but it would have to be really, REALLY over-the-top so the irony was fun and not full of pathos. You could pair it with that horrifying "Get an Ugly Girl to Marry You" song ("If you want to be happy your whole life through, get an ugly girl to marry you!"), and if I sat and thought about it, I'm sure I could come up with a third song to round it out. Hell, maybe even Ani's "Not a Pretty Girl", though the style of the song doesn't really mesh with the other two.

    Just my two cents.
"Before I conceived you, I wanted you. Before you were born, I loved you. Before you were here an hour, I would die for you. This is the miracle of life." -- Maureen Hawkins

"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat." -- Anne Lamott

A burlesque-y thing is definitely what I had in mind... it's obviously a sad song and it resonates so much with me- such a reflection of our society, and even the principal of stripping in general, but I pictured myself doing a campy, cheesy, vaudeville-esque approach with it... and wondering if it could be pulled off? I plan on making it very silly and cute... but still... *so torn*

Have you heard Ruth Brown's If I Can't Sell It? It's an 80s jazz-lounge song with some fabulous cheeky lyrics. REALLY good for a burlesque-ish routine You'll need to put a chair in the middle of the stage for it.

Y'know.. the reason this song sounds like it could come out of the 20's is probably cuz it does.. or nearly so. Eddie Cantor sung this tune in blackface waaaay back in the early 30's in a movie called "Roman Scandals"..

Check it out.. you'll need to forward it past the first two minutes to get to the song.

But yeah, probably could be pulled off with a Betty Boop-ish feel..
