    Default 17 MPH over...

This sucks. I was driving with my windows foggy and I, um... Vroomed past a MARKED police car doing 77 in a 60. I didn't see him, my GOD-DAMNED windows were fogged, all but my back and front windows that had the defrosters.

Anyone have any idea how much this might be? Any idea on points?

In Indiana it would be $150 and 4 points. Wow. It's not good that I can just bust out that kind of information.

i was once told to fight all traffic violations that you have a better chance to get 0 points and little money this way as opposed to just taking it, and/or paying it.

    Love it!

Points on your driving record = bad. In most states, if you rack up too many points, you'll lose your license. The more points you have, the higher your insurance rates will be. You can get points if you get traffic tickets (and a judge doesn't let you off) or cause accidents.

By the time I was 19 I had 21 points (speeding tickets), and in that state, the cutoff for license suspension was 13 points, but I weasled out and didn't lose my license

Madcap, I dunno about your state, but in my past experience, more than 15 miles over the limit was usually good for 3-4 points and @ $100-500 in fines.

Ask for supervision it will cost you more but the ticket will not go on your record, no points added and it will not go on your record. It works in Illinois anyway.

    Mad_Cap:

In our state, it would be 155. We do it by blocks of speed over. However, our city is retarded, and if it's a city ticket I can over pay it by a buck. And when they FINALLY (City should be EMBARASSED) got the return check, I never depositied it. I was up for 2 points on my license and I wrote everyone in the department I could find to have them removed, but since I hadn't cashed the check the transaction was open and points werent applied. So when I finally got a letter from the Department Head dictating he'd remove the points if they showed up, I got my dollar back! No points!

I don't know how many points that would be, but in upstate NY I got a ticket for 30 mph over the speed limit (75 in a 45) and he ticketed me for not using my blinker while pulling me over. Thankfully they never contacted my DMV (NJ) because it would have been 6 points for the speeding and 3 points for the "improper lane change." Did pay over 1000 dollars in fines too with 610 dollars for the tickets and surcharges, and 525 dollars for the "Driver Responsibility Assessment."

I chose not to fight this ticket because I thought I had no chance but nearly ended up losing my license in the process. Always fight a ticket, even if it is against a state trooper. Otherwise they'll give you the maximum penalty they can get away with.

Now thankfully I have learned only 2 points per moving violation can be transferred over from NY to NJ. It's not as bad as it could have been, but I still received a nasty insurance hike.

Madcap, if you're in Missouri here's the points system. How many you actually get may vary on whether you end up in a state court or a local one.

And yes, I always recommend fighting a ticket.

I'll tell you this, i wasn't doing any 77mph. That dude hit his lights and i looked at the spedometer right away. I was speeding, but it was closer to 70 than it was 80. So unless my spedometer's bunked up...

I was speeding, yeah, and i don't mind taking my hit for it. But i'm not gonna just lay down.

Unless you can provide a calibration report from your last tune-up, they'll believe his radar.

Just it, no radar was involved. He got me by 'pacing' says it right on the ticket. Like i said, i didn't see him.

    that succcckkksss man

I challenged a cop once who got me on radar asking him to show me a tuning fork. He wrote "How about I just put you contest the ticket."

Which was a risk, cause I only knew they tuned some radars using an F tuning fork, not ours per se.

But yea, if he paced you, you should be able to request a calibration results at the contest hearing...

Ok- i did a lot of research for my last speeding ticket, and was about to BEAT IT because they changed the speed limit on the bridge where i got it (i.e. the traffic survey told the city to increase the limit, so my ticket would have been null & void) and after all that my stupid officer didn't even show.... i was so set to kick ass. here's the best resource-- FIGHT it get the traffic and engineering survey, if it hasn't been done in the last 5 yrs, you won your case already. go to helpigotaticket.com best thing out there. learn the laws- most people just pay up because they don't know how to fight 'em. since i ride a bike i was NOT going to get points on my license from an auto-violation. often the officer doesn't even show. go to the site and see if you can win. PM me if you like.

    If in doubt, weasel out.

I think Homer said it best: "Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals ... except the weasel."

    Commence weaseling.

Camn Dops! At this point i think they should just do away with the speed limit and let it be a free for all. All it is is $ making.

Well, i don't think cussing cops or doing away with the speed limit is in order. I really was speeding, and thus i deserved the ticket. It's just that as soon as that guy hit his lights i looked down at the spedometer out of reflex and it was just a little over 70. I don't mind taking a hit for something i'm guilty of, but i SAW my speed. No way was it close to 80.

Madcap- I seriously suggest going to helpigotaticket.com haha I didn't say "do away with the speed limit..." I said that's what the city had done on that particular stretch of road 2 months after my ticket- this site helped me find out how to get the traffic and engineering survey to prove the recommendation for the increased limit, but it can also help with laser calibration tests, basic speeding law (the 20 questions test- people have won on it) and it's ALWAYS worth fighting because often the officer doesn't show. Truly- it doesn't matter if you were speeding, it matters if their methods of PROVING it are accurate and up to date. go to the site, or better yet PM me and i can give you some advice. best part- even if you lose- you can still ask for traffic court if you haven't been in the last 18 months. i.e. what DO you have to lose, other than a majorly reduced chance of paying a fine? sounds like a speed trap to me- and speed traps are ILLEGAL in many states. plus, if the speed is wrong, the laser calibration could be off. fight it!

If you don't want to try the calibration idea, you can always ask for a prayer for judgement continued (if your state has it). The way it works here is they "hold" the ticket for 3 years. You don't get points or get charged with your insurance unless you get another ticket within those 3 years. If you do, both of them go against you. But if you're good for 3 years, it drops off. Good luck!
