    Thumbs down BOO Zelnorm

Psh. My doctor suggested this new experimental IBS drug for me. Well, I tried it. And goooood lord. I've never been so destroyed. I literally thought the alien would burst forth from my abdomen at any moment- such were the gut ouchieness and general meltdown I've been experiencing...

...and if you can believe it it's been three days since I tried ONE pill of that stuff, and I'm still a mess. I can't get the digestion back on track. I've lost like seven pounds since Sunday. Not good (meaning I've got to be super dehydrated or something).

So I'm thinking maybe a juice fast for a couple days to calm things? Would that work, or would any form of detox just stress the system even more??

(and anyone else who tries that stuff, beware)

I had to go cold turkey off of Zelnorm after about 6 months. Just out of the blue one day it TRASHED my GI tract. Now I just have to deal without drugs until they find something for us people that have alternating constipation/diarrhea IBS

have you tried taking fiber pills? My doctor suggested that because I kept having stomach problems. he said in general your digestive track likes to have a good amount of fiber, but to take the kind in Citrucel, not metamucil.

^^^Yes, I take Prodiem. It helps some. Wellbutrin helps too. Nothing seems to get rid of my incapacitated state when exam stress is in full swing (or when I travel...)

...someone suggested seeing a psychologist about stress management and my anxiety issues...not sure I want to go that route, but maybe. I am doing better with all this than I was last year, so it's good news for the most part. And my Doctor is one of my favourite people, but damn, experimental drugs are no fun when they don't work (like duh Molly).

my doctor just said... i'm not saying IBS is psychosomatic... i'm just saying many people find that when they 'manage their stress', they manage their IBS.

once i stopped being a basket case about everything, and stopped doing jobs i hated, and canned the foods that i knew irritated me personally, it went away.

    i love an honest doctor.

I almost tried zelnorm, but my insurance wouldn't pay for it because it wasn't on their "approved" list. I opted for a series of colonics instead, and it took about 4 visits but I'm pretty much back to normal. I agree with Nautilus too, stress management is one thing the hydrotherapist recommended. So maybe it was a combo of the colonics, managing stress, and diet changes. If you read about juice fasting, you'll find out that one of the detox symptoms is tummy troubles, so that may not be the best thing to do right now. Maybe just drink a lot of water for now and maybe some acidophillus to help add bacteria back in.

    here is a blurb i read..below

I do think stress has alot because (i dont have ibs)
on relaxing weekends where i dont eat alot at one time.. even if i eat pizza or freezer snack foods ect.. my stomach is just fine
Sometimes during the week if stresssed when i eat healthy like salads and fish and grains i can get a stomach the size of a basketball.. i think stress just throws your body into hault mode.. haulting even digestion
I heard an analogy about how animals when they eat.. if after they are faced with "danger" or stress they throw up their food.. because the stress causes their digestion to stop... and they throw it up cause they know this and they dont get sick.. so stress does play a role anyways heres what i read

I founda probiotic supplement at whole foods in the fridge dept.. acidophillus

Stress - Anxiety and stress are major components in many IBS attacks
For most of us, reducing stress is a move in the direction of better health
A start could be taking a minute or two during the day to take some deep breaths and
relax. Yoga and meditation have been used to reduce stress for thousand of years. Depending on the severity of symptoms and the role stress plays, looking at stress/anxiety factors in your life and moving gradually to simplify and reduce some of them could be indicated.

Foods - An approach here might be to jot down various foods consumed and note when they are followed by IBS symptoms. Another approach is to eliminate various foods (especially those that seem to be trigger foods for many IBS sufferers) for a time and see if there is a lessening of symptoms.

IBS patients often eliminate all lactose containing (dairy) foods as a first step as
lactose seems to be at least a factor for a great many people.

Stimulants like caffeine and tobacco likewise often irritate the intestinal tract and can
make symptoms like diarrhea worse as can non-nutritive sweeteners like Sorbitol and xylitol.

In a more general sense eating too much at any particular meal, eating too often or
eating too much of a particular type of food (fats, oils or fried foods for instance) can put a strain on the digestive system, impair digestion and absorption and aggravate symptoms

Supplementation - From what we know today, by far the most important supplementation for the IBS sufferer is probiotic supplementation! Studies indicate that lactobacillus bacteria even as the only treatment can have a significant effect on IBS symptoms (Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome...American Journal of Gastroenterology, 91: 1579-1585, 1966.).

Other supplements which have been successful for some patients with IBS include,
peppermint oil, slippery elm powder (for healing irritated tissues), mint leaves, ginger, chamomile and insoluble fiber either through enough whole grain and vegetables or ground flax seeds or use of a Metamucil type fiber supplement.

have you been tested for celiac disease? From what I've read it presents a lot like IBS and is often overlooked.

^^No I haven't, but god, I think I'm almost afraid of that being the case...so afraid, I want to pretend it's not. I love food. Celiac diets are HELL from what I've read (if you love food like I do).

..actually, I gave zelnorm another chance, and it's not killing me anymore...not quite doing its job yet, but I'm gonna give it a week or two.

I thought I might have it and went on a celiac message board and read about what they eat and was really glad to find out I didn't because eating that way would be tough! But really if you do have it and are that uncomfortable it would be nice to have relief from it.

I have Celiac and it is hard at first to figure out what to eat. I cook a lot more now and have found some good products like tinkyada rice pasta which tastes pretty much the same as regular pasta.
I think the suggestion for probiotics is really good. Eating yogurt--Cascade Fresh is a good brand and has 8 types of live active cultures.
