    Default Xanax

No this is not a "I need Xanax for my job" thing.

I seriously have anxiety. Always have. Used to "have trouble breathing" as a little girl. I've never done anything serious about it but I do think that medication could help me.

I've tried yoga, pilates and breathing techniques.

My friend told me that doctors don't really prescribe Xanax anymore. Something about it being pretty addictive.

Can anyone share any experiences with Xanax or another (better?) drug for anxiety?

    Thanks so much.

    (:

i wont be much help, but it is hard to get a prescription for it. i wanted it because i have really bad anxiety too, and trouble sleeping at night. did you go to your usual doctor or what? i'd try going to another. my psychiatrist wouldnt give it to me because i have an addictive personality but he wanted me to take something else. be very careful with what you take because a lot of those anti anxiety drugs have horrible side effects. i ended up not taking anything. like i said, i'd try to get it from another doctor.

Only thing that helped me to get off Xanax was to cut out sugar and refined carbs from my diet. After that, few and far between. Have to be majorly stressed for one to occur.

There's a few other girls on here who can attest to this as well.

There are other non-addictive drugs used to treat anxiety besides Xanax. I think it is a really bad idea to start taking that stuff regulary. I was once in rehab with a little old lady who had become strung out on it. It can happen to anyone.

Well how often do you get anxiety? Or have attacks? I have anxiety often too but only get anxiety attacks if I am extremely provoked. The best way to deal with anxiety for me has been to stop thinking negatively, ignore any problems you might have at the moment and think of positive things or happy times/places. That sucks that you have to take drugs, they probably stop working after a while anyway so you might as well just solve your problems without them.

xanax is pretty addictive. i know a few people who are hooked on it.

personally my only experience with xanax was when an old friend of mine crushed one up and snorted it along with a line of speed just to see what would happen, and tried to get me to do the same. i politely declined, and promptly left her house before she started experiencing any effects.

Try to figure out your major stressors and spend less time on them. Exercise is good to get rid of extra adrenaline that may cause that and good for sleep too. Easier said than done I know. I'm trying to get back into it.
I'm not for the drugs unless you have to. Alot of times you get prescribed anti depressants. The side effect of not being able to orgasm makes you think "wtf?" Plus you can obtain a flat effect. that's hard to describe. Kinda like you're just there every day. Not happy or sad = not good.
    Best of luck.

I have to say, knowing drug addicts who have been addicted and buy and sell this stuff on the street...

It's a drug like any other street drug, even if it is prescribed.

You could also choose heroin or oxycontin or speed for your anxiety, as many other people do.

The only real cure for anxiety I have found is major cardio, something way more intense than yoga or pilates, or yes cutting out sugar for sure, and definitely changing a perception of what to do when anxiety strikes.

You can fatally overdose on benzodiazepines like xanax. And over time it induces more anxiety, severe depression, sleep disturbance and skin problems.

Stay away from this crap, I have seen the devastating effects.

I hate to bring this up, since it puts me in a bad light *sigh*, but experience says that getting off benzodiazepines can be even harder than getting off opiates (street or RX). Be careful.

I had a major turnaround in the anxiety department when I got off sugar, alcohol, and some foods I was sensitive to. See a reputable homeopath in your area and discuss diet and lifestyle options first. Drugs can be a lifesaver but I like to think of them as a last resort.

I have to agree with the cardio suggestion. When I have major anxiety I notice I have alot of nervous engery and I have the urge to hit the treadmill. Unfortunately for me, I never make the time to do that. I really think you should go to your doctor and tell him/her what you've told us: explain your symptoms, detail how long it's been going on and describe what you've tried in order to alleviate it. Ask your doc what options you have and then research the potential meds (or other options if offered).

I'll get 5-10 pills script once every 2-3 months. All the docs know of my addictive personality too so I've basically been shut down since I was 19 bc of an od on valium. I am 26 now. Actually, I've had about 8 pills of xanax in the house for over 3yrs and never touch them. I must be over them. I take Effexor for dep/ anxiety. It works well for me, but I've heard of many people who can't take it at all. All the natural remedies mentioned worked to alleviate maybe 10-20% of my anxiety which is not nearly enough for me to function day to day. The meds make me feel anywhere from60-85% better. That's why I take them

Yay for Paxil! I've been on it for 6+ years now and it has changed my life. I used to get panic attacks from the time I was a little girl. It actually runs in my family. I am on a very low dosage (10mg) and if I'm on it for the rest of my life, that's fine by me. (although you don't by any means have to stay on it. I don't believe it's addictive) I have only taken xanax twice, and while it's very effective if you are in a full-blown panic attack I cannot see using it on a regular basis. It kinda f*cks you up, ya know? Anyway, I'm no doctor but I can tell you what worked for me. And Paxil has been a miracle.

I think as long as you use it responsibly there's no reason you can't take a Xanax or some other sedative occasionally. I'd much rather do that than take the anti-depressants that a lot of doctors try to get their patients on. Unless you have a constant problem with anxiety, there's no reason to go on a daily medication such as Paxil. That stuff is very serious and has a lot of side effects.

Your doctor might prescribe you a low dosage sedative, and if you don't currently have a tolerance that will probably do you just fine. If she advises you to go on anti-depressants you should research it thoroughly before you start. Of course, it is wise to do that with any new medication.

And there are ways to get things like that online if your doctor will not prescribe. Just do a search.

I didn't find it that hard to get a Xanax script for anxiety. Having said that, I did pick my doctors carefully. Some won't prescribe it at all. I wound up quitting it though- it really is addictive and also I moved and couldn't be arsed trying to find another doctor.

I've been taking the stuff for a few months and haven't found myself addicted at all. Now, I don't have an addictive personality, but even when I don't have my pills with me, I don't feel that I need them terribly. Nothing else has worked to treat my anxiety; it really really helps with the physical symptoms...shortness of breath, sweating, chest pain, etc. Its been a real lifesaver.

Xanax has a shorter effective period than other anti-anxiety drugs. It's unlikely that it would not be prescribed for addictive reasons, except at higher doses.

To put this in perspective, I once had a psychiatrist look at a Xanax prescription written by a general practioner and he just laughed out loud. "No," he said, "it's better that you join the 21st Century."

Any prescription drug can become addictive. Coffee and alcohol can also become addictive. If you have an addictive personality (don't we all?) it can pose some real challenges. But it sounds like you have considered the non-medical alternatives.

One alternative is Ativan (lorazipam), which is one of the most reliable and oldest anti-anxiety drugs. They use an IV version in pre-surgery to calm patients. The 2 mg dosage will eliminate your anxiety in about 30 minutes and bring about an amazing calming and sedative effect in about an hour, and that will last for a good five hours. It's half-life in the bloodstream is about six to eight hours, which means that it's effective for about twice as long as Xanax. But take the time to learn how your own body reacts to it -- start at the lower doses and try to find the lowest effective dose.

I occasionally take Xanax in addition to my antidepressants; obviously, everyone is different, but I have no problems with it, and it's allowed me to function through panic attacks and-- gasp-- behave like a less-crazy person. I can't say enough good things about it.

However, a lot of people have had problems, and there are all sorts of 'tranqs' out there that are more sophisticated.

This site is awesome. It's like my Bible!

Good luck! Anxiety problems are the *worst.* I can't even remember how I got through it before therapy...

Benzo addiction is worse than being addicted to pain pills or H. You have to be weined off of them with tegrtol and klonopin.
I have to take them to work to and then it dries up my tummy and makes it so I can't poop.
Watch it with those please. You can hurt yourself......

Ditto on having to wean yourself off.

If you're addiction gets big enough you can have fatal seizures coming off the stuff, but you can see I hate this crap from my earlier post.

Really, we ALL HAVE ANXIETY, there is no reason to take any drug. Why the hell do you think people smoke weed and cigarettes.

You know that crackheads and heroin junkies are also trying to medicate their anxiety and depression. Spare me that you can take it responsibly. You can buy it on the street and die from using it.

Most benzo addicts say they don't have any problem. Most drug addicts live in denial, don't believe the hype that it's good for you.

Hmmm, Xanax is STILL the most prescribed med. for anxiety. Many doctors are far TOO quick to prescribe it. It's Very addictive and has a very short 'half life' in the body, which means you need more or a higher dose soon.

Klonopin is prescribed by many doctors now ONLY due to the longer half life in the body. You can probably get by on one pill a day, where with Xanax you would need perhaps 2 or three. That's the only difference. Both are very addictive. And many people who take these Benzo's. over a six month period need to be slowly weaned off by a doctor (which of course anxiety comes back) or in house as a patient. These drugs can be nasty.

They only mask symptoms. They are not a cure.

Of course anxiety disorders can be a living hell themselves. What ever works for you, try it.

    Good luck.

Xanax is evil. I was given them inpatient once instead of Ativan and they made me sick. I strongly urge you to talk to a doctor about another option if you feel you need medication. I've seen Xanax turn people into junkies rather quickly.

I've got Ativan just in case I need it, but it's been 4 or 5 months since I needed one. Do everything you can do before you start using medication. Meds are the last resort, and they don't fix things. Good luck girl.

Haven't read all the posts yet but as someone who suffers from anxiety/agoraphobia due to PTSS...

...Its my experience that most docs are pretty hesitant to prescribe xanax for anything besides a short term as needed use. It's a little addictive so i wouldn't recommend it.

Long term wise. DO NOT get on paxil. for more info, in case it becomes an option. Paxil is a black boxed drug that is already being de-shelved in a lot of countries and take up to a few years to be weaned off of, should you need to be, depending on your dose.

Buspar has worked best for me as it works in the background and ONLY for anxiety (not depression or bipolar). No side effects, easy to be taken off of--most anxiety meds you need to be weened from.

I was n Ativan. That was fun times, but they wouldn't give me more than a months worth. I could see why. it made me feel fuzzy and sleepy. But not anxious, haha.
